2024 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Redesigning a long-running vehicle requires a big swing, and after fourteen years since the second-generation model debuted, building the all-new 2024 GX was a tall order. Lexus’s engineers struck out to make this midsize SUV better in every way: better tech, a better engine, more capability, and more luxury. They succeeded.

Verdict: Comfortable but rugged, the thirsty, body-on-frame Lexus GX isn’t the right luxury SUV for every shopper. However, for those in the market for this particular blend of lavish capability, it may be the best option on the market.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

Look and feel

2024 Lexus GX

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2024 Lexus GX presented a striking departure from its predecessor, the GX 460, with a bold geometric design that replaced the softer, rounded edges of the previous model. The signature spindle grille was less pronounced, flanked by standard triple-beam LED headlights that contributed to a more aggressive front fascia. The vehicle's side profile appeared as if carved from a solid block of metal, with minimal character lines and a low window beltline enhancing visibility for off-road adventures. The GX was available in a single trim with five packages, each catering to different preferences, from luxury to off-road capabilities. Inside, the GX combined luxury with practicality, featuring a 14-inch touchscreen and physical controls for off-road functions, making it a premium SUV ready for rugged use.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, available in three trims—LT, Z71, and RS—offered a new Z71 variant for those interested in moderate off-roading. While not designed for extreme terrains like the Jeep Wrangler, the Z71 was capable of handling rugged paths. The Traverse's pricing was competitive, with the LT starting at $50,833 and the RS reaching $65,733. The Z71 model, priced at $56,833, featured gloss black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and a Jet Black interior with Torch Red accents. The Traverse's interior was comfortable, with optional synthetic leather seating and a power-folding third row, enhancing its practicality for families. The vehicle's design and features made it a strong contender in the midsize SUV segment.

Performance

2024 Lexus GX

9/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

The 2024 Lexus GX transitioned from a V8 to a twin-turbocharged 3.4-litre V6 engine, delivering 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain provided impressive low-end torque, making off-road driving more accessible. Built on the GA-F truck platform, the GX offered a stiffer chassis for improved stability on and off-road. The 10-speed automatic transmission operated smoothly, and the standard full-time 4WD with a locking Torsen limited-slip centre differential enhanced its off-road capabilities. The Overtrail packages added a locking rear differential and the Electronic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (E-KDSS) for increased wheel articulation. Despite its size, the GX handled well on-road, with minimal body roll and effective brakes.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous 310-horsepower V6 with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine offered more power and torque than its predecessor. All-wheel drive was standard, with the Z71 trim featuring a dual-clutch system for better traction. The Traverse provided satisfactory acceleration and passing power, with a pleasant exhaust note. The steering was adequate for most driving conditions, and the ride quality was commendable, even with all-terrain tires. The brakes were progressive, and the fuel-saving stop-and-start feature operated seamlessly. The Traverse's fuel economy was rated at 12.4 L/100 km in the city, 9.9 on the highway, and 11.3 combined.

Form and function

2024 Lexus GX

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2024 Lexus GX's interior was a departure from its predecessor, with a minimalist and sophisticated design. It featured fewer physical buttons, retaining essential controls for climate and off-road functions. The first and second rows offered ample space for six-foot-tall adults, with 1,047 mm of legroom in the front and 933 mm in the second row. The third row, available in certain packages, was tight for adults. The GX excelled in cargo space, offering 292 litres behind the third row, expanding to 1,138 litres with it folded, and a total of 2,178 litres. Overtrail models provided even more cargo capacity.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse offered seating for eight in the LT and Z71 trims, with the RS model featuring second-row captain's chairs for seven-passenger capacity. The third row was suitable for average-size adults, with Smart Slide second-row seats for easy access. The Traverse boasted a power-folding third row and an Autosense power liftgate for convenience. Cargo volume was 648 litres behind the third row, expanding to 2,764 litres with the second and third rows folded. The cabin featured numerous storage compartments, including a hidden area under the centre console and an underfloor storage bin in the cargo bay. Visibility was generally good, except for the third row.

Technology

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

9/10

The 2024 Lexus GX featured a 14-inch touchscreen with USB-C ports and an available wireless charging pad. The Lexus Interface infotainment system offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a Drive Connect subscription service for voice commands. Remote Connect provided remote locking, unlocking, and vehicle diagnostics. The GX came with a 10-speaker audio system, with higher packages offering a 21-speaker Mark Levinson stereo. While the interface was user-friendly, subscription costs for certain features were a consideration for long-term ownership.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse impressed with a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 11-inch digital instrument display. The system ran on Google-based software, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The wireless charging pad in the Z71 model was effective, and physical controls for volume and HVAC functions were appreciated. However, the placement of the driving mode button and headlight controls within the infotainment system was less ideal. The Traverse introduced Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, expanding its functionality to single-lane roads. The system performed well, though it disengaged at intersections.

Safety

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2024 Lexus GX received significant safety upgrades with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, including pre-collision detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and road-sign recognition. While crash tests were pending, the new architecture and advanced driver assistance systems improved its safety profile.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse had not yet been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but it offered a comprehensive suite of driver aids as standard. These included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, adaptive cruise control, and more. The presence of these systems provided peace of mind during our test drive.
