2024 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

The Toyota Sequoia gained a standard hybrid powertrain when it entered its third generation, just last year. While the tech updates were widely celebrated and the facelift considered unobjectionable even by its harshest critics, the move to hybrid power proved to be something of a mixed bag. Increased towing and hauling power bolstered the obvious advantage of improved fuel economy, but impact was somewhat dampened by the reduction in cargo and third-row space to accommodate the new battery.

Verdict: The Sequoia may not be the most capable full-size SUV in the segment, and it’s certainly not the most spacious. It is, however, the only hybrid in its class, and it offers a blend of seating capacity, towing power, and fuel efficiency you won’t find elsewhere-at least, not if you don’t want to go diesel.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia shared its platform with the Tundra pickup, and this connection was evident in its design elements such as hexagonal grilles, wheel arches, and a muscular stance. The exterior color significantly influenced its appearance, with the Capstone model in Celestial Silver giving off a somewhat dated "cop car" vibe. However, a switch to Solar Octane orange with black accents transformed it into a playful "Tonka truck" look. Inside, the Sequoia mirrored the Tundra's blocky, geometric dashboard design, featuring physical dials and buttons for climate control and volume. The Capstone trim boasted semi-aniline leather upholstery, while other trims offered a range of seating materials. The Sequoia's interior was equipped with power-adjustable front seats and a standard power-tilt and -slide moonroof, enhancing its comfort and customization options.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse was available in four main trims: LS, LT, Z71, and RS, with the Z71 being a new addition aimed at moderate off-roading. During a test drive near Atlanta, it was clear that the Z71 was not designed for extreme off-road adventures but could handle rugged terrain. The Traverse's pricing was competitive, with the LS starting at $38,995 and the RS reaching $55,595. The Z71 model, priced at $47,795, featured gloss black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint. Inside, the Jet Black interior with "Torch Red" accents added a touch of flair. The standard cloth seats were comfortable, and synthetic leather was available for an additional cost. The Traverse's design and features made it a strong contender in its class.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia was exclusively offered in a hybrid format, utilizing Toyota's iForce MAX hybrid powertrain. This system combined a twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor, producing 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, surpassing its V8 predecessor. The Sequoia's fuel economy improved significantly, achieving 20 mpg combined with 4WD. The TRD Pro trim was equipped with 4WD and off-road features like a skid plate and a part-time system with 4Hi, 4Lo, and 2WD options. The 10-speed automatic transmission provided smooth operation, and the Sequoia's on-road handling was adequate for its class. The TRD Off-Road package added adventure-ready features, while the maximum towing capacity increased to 9,520 pounds.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous 310-horsepower V6 engine with a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, delivering 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine offered an 18-horsepower advantage and 50 lb-ft more torque than the V6. The Traverse's AWD system, especially in the Z71 trim, featured a dual-clutch arrangement for improved traction. On highways and country roads, the Traverse provided acceptable acceleration and passing power, with a pleasant exhaust growl. The steering was adequate for most driving situations, and the ride quality was exemplary, even with all-terrain tires. The brakes were progressive, and the fuel-saving stop-and-start feature operated seamlessly. Fuel economy estimates ranged from 18 mpg city to 26 mpg highway, depending on the trim and drivetrain.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia Capstone featured automatic power-deploying running boards, enhancing accessibility. Inside, the Sequoia offered a maximum of 86.9 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third rows folded. The third-row seats could be adjusted for more cargo space, but the hybrid powertrain's battery pack affected the load floor and headroom. Legroom varied across rows, with the Sequoia trailing some rivals in this aspect. Second-row captain's chairs were available in higher trims, providing comfort but lacking bolstering.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse's base LS model offered seating for eight, while higher trims featured second-row captain's chairs for easier third-row access. The Smart Slide second-row seats were user-friendly, and a power-folding third row was available. The Autosense power liftgate added convenience for loading cargo. The Traverse provided 22.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 96 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. Storage options included a hidden area under the center console and an underfloor storage bin in the cargo bay. Visibility was generally good, except for the third row, and the driver's seat was power-operated for easy adjustments.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia Capstone was equipped with a range of technology features, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SR5 trim had an 8-inch touchscreen, while other trims boasted a 14-inch center touchscreen. The Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system prioritized functionality over flashiness. A 12.3-inch driver-information display was standard across all trims, and the Panoramic View monitor enhanced visibility. The Capstone trim included a 10-inch color head-up display and a 14-speaker JBL Premium Audio system.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse featured a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen, replacing the previous 8-inch screen. The system offered rapid response times and intuitive menus. An 11-inch digital instrument display provided customizable information, aiding navigation. The Google-based software supported voice commands and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The wireless charging pad in the Z71 trim securely held smartphones. Physical controls for volume and HVAC functions were retained, though the driving mode button was less prominent. The Traverse introduced Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, expanding its functionality to single-lane roads.

Front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking and blind-spot monitoring with Trailer Merge Warning were also standard. The Tow Technology Package added a digital rearview mirror and trailer backup guide. The Sequoia had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA, but the similar Tundra earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse had not undergone crash tests by the NHTSA or IIHS at the time of testing. However, it offered a comprehensive range of driver aids, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and more. These features provided peace of mind during the test drive.
