2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

2024 Chevrolet Traverse Reviews Summary

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse has gone from being something of a wallflower to becoming one of the more stand-out choices among midsize SUVs with three rows of seating. That’s because Chevrolet’s design and engineering team did its homework when it came time to update this third generation of the Traverse, a model that has featured in the brand’s lineup since its introduction back for the 2009 model year.

The 2024 Chevy Traverse is taller, wider, and longer than the outgoing variant. It’s also much more memorable to look at; following current SUV trends, Chevrolet gave the Traverse a more rugged appearance that borrows from both the full-size Tahoe SUV and Sierra pickup truck. Styling is always subjective, but in this instance, we think it’s fair to say Chevy got things right.

Verdict: More important than any additional visual bravado is that the 2024 Traverse has been improved in countless other ways. It has more standard driver aids, such as blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. There is more space for passengers, particularly those seated in the third row. And the infotainment system gets a much larger touchscreen.

Look and feel

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX presented a commanding presence with its massive spindle grille and 206 millimetres of ground clearance, standing tall at 1,885 millimetres. Its front end appeared ready to conquer the road, framed by large headlights that accentuated its distinctive face. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned with only 3,000 units available, featuring exclusive paint colours like Nori Green Pearl. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's design seemed more suited for off-road adventures, with a short 2,789 mm wheelbase and minimal overhangs. The interior, however, was a mix of luxury and practicality, with some plastic materials betraying its high price tag. Yet, it offered heated and cooled front seats, a power-retracting steering wheel, and impressive leather upholstery.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, available in LT, Z71, and RS trims, introduced the Z71 for those seeking moderate off-roading capabilities. While not designed for extreme terrains like the Rubicon Trail, it handled rugged paths with ease. Pricing was competitive, with the LT starting at $50,833 and the RS reaching $65,733. Our Z71 test model, priced at $56,833, featured gloss black-painted 18-inch alloy wheels and Iridescent Pearl Tricoat paint. Inside, the Jet Black interior with "Torch Red" accents added flair, and the standard cloth seats provided comfort and breathability. The Traverse's design catered to both style and functionality, making it a versatile choice for families.

Performance

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

7/10

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its robust V8 engine, delivering 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 offered a satisfying linear power delivery and a distinctive sound. However, its 2,948-kilogram towing capacity and fuel economy of 16.2 litres per 100 kilometres in the city were less impressive compared to modern SUVs. The GX's weight contributed to its predictable handling, with a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential enhancing its 4WD capabilities.

In contrast, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse replaced its previous 310-horsepower V6 with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. This new engine offered more power and torque, with AWD standard across all trims. The Traverse excelled in acceleration and passing power, with a pleasant exhaust growl. Its steering was adequate for its size, and the ride quality was commendable, even with all-terrain tires. Fuel economy was reasonable, with estimates of 12.4 litres per 100 kilometres in the city. The Traverse's advanced AWD system and seamless stop-and-start feature added to its appeal.

Form and function

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX offered ample cubby space, with a deep centre console bin and convenient cupholders. However, it lacked modern USB-C ports, sticking with USB-A. The GX's physical controls were a blessing for those who preferred hard buttons over touchscreens. The second row provided comfort with captain's chairs, but the third row was cramped. Cargo space was limited, with only 328 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,832 litres with all seats folded.

The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse, on the other hand, provided seating for eight in the LT and Z71 trims, with the RS offering seven seats. The Smart Slide second-row seats and power-folding third row enhanced accessibility and cargo capacity. With 648 litres of cargo space behind the third row, expanding to 2,764 litres with seats folded, the Traverse excelled in practicality. Storage nooks and a hidden storage area under the centre console added convenience. Visibility was generally good, though the third row's view was limited.

Technology

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

9/10

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, an improvement over its predecessor but still lagging behind newer Lexus models. It included SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and smartphone compatibility. The GX's off-road capabilities were highlighted by its 4WD system, downhill assist, and KDSS suspension. However, the infotainment system's dated graphics and lagging performance were drawbacks.

In contrast, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse boasted a 17.7-inch infotainment touchscreen with rapid response times and an 11-inch digital instrument display. Running on Google-based software, it offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Traverse retained physical controls for essential functions, though some controls were buried in the infotainment system. The introduction of Super Cruise, a hands-free driving aid, added to its technological prowess, expanding its functionality to single-lane roads.

Safety

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 Chevrolet Traverse

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX had not been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS, but it featured the Lexus Safety System+ with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, and more. Despite its older design, it incorporated modern safety features.

Similarly, the 2024 Chevrolet Traverse had not undergone crash tests, but it offered a comprehensive suite of driver aids, including automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, blind-spot warning, and adaptive cruise control. These features provided peace of mind during our test drive.
