2021 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

ost modern SUVs are really car-based crossovers—lifted station wagons, or minivans without the sliding doors. That’s not the case with the 2021 Lexus GX 460.

Like the mythical Loch Ness Monster, the GX is a creature that time forgot. It’s one of the last SUVs with truck-like body-on-frame construction and true off-road capability. That’s because the GX is actually a rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (a smaller version of the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser not sold in North America), and is related to the Toyota 4Runner. It’s also genuinely old: the current generation dates back to the 2010 model year, and Lexus has kept it in production with some updates of styling and tech over the years.

That makes the GX a fairly odd proposition on the new-car market. It has the off-road capability, not as a lifestyle statement, but because that’s what was still expected of SUVs when it was launched. The GX sits between the RX and LX in the Lexus lineup but has little direct competition. Its only real rival is the much newer Land Rover Discovery.

For the 2021 model year, the GX gets some minor updates. Lexus continues to offer only the GX 460 model, with a single powertrain option, a standard four-wheel drive (4WD) drivetrain, and two pricing levels: base, or the Executive package.

2022 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia shares its platform with the Toyota Tundra pickup truck. It comes with standard four-wheel-drive (4WD) drivetrains (rear-wheel-drive (RWD) is not offered in Canada). The Sequoia comes in three trim levels: Limited, Platinum, and TRD Pro. While competitors have refreshed their full-size SUVs over the past few years, Toyota has stood pat with the Sequoia, relying on minor cosmetic updates to keep the SUV in the hunt since 2008. A new Toyota Sequoia has been announced and is slated to be launched for the 2023 model year.

Look and feel

2021 Lexus GX

7/10

2022 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2021 Lexus GX retained its decade-old body shell, with minor updates over the years, including the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights. Despite its age, the GX's styling remained coherent and distinctive, appealing to SUV enthusiasts with its aggressive look. However, the interior did not match the modern luxury SUV standards, with wood trim resembling plastic and an abundance of actual plastic. The semi-aniline leather was a standard feature, but the overall interior felt outdated.

In contrast, the 2022 Toyota Sequoia, continuing its second generation into its 14th year, maintained a mature design with modest grille size and elegant wheel arches. Its dimensions were substantial, offering a commanding presence. The interior, though dated, was typical of Toyota's high-quality materials and tight seams. The Sequoia's design was built to last, with a focus on durability and functionality, making it suitable for families. The Nightshade Special Edition model showcased Toyota's efforts to keep the Sequoia relevant, despite its age.

Performance

2021 Lexus GX

6/10

2022 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2021 Lexus GX featured a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. While the V8 provided ample power for initial acceleration, the GX's weight of 2,349 kilograms affected its performance at higher speeds, requiring careful planning for overtaking and stopping. The body-on-frame construction resulted in a less refined ride compared to modern unibody SUVs. However, the GX excelled in off-road capability with features like a Torsen centre differential, low-range 4WD, and Multi-Terrain Select, offering a respectable 20.5 centimetres of ground clearance.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia was powered by a 5.7-litre i-Force V8 engine, delivering 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. With a payload capacity of up to 608 kilograms and a towing capacity of 3,221 kilograms, the Sequoia was a robust performer. Despite its weight of around 2,721.5 kilograms, the Sequoia offered a smooth and stable ride, with excellent highway performance and off-road capabilities. The TRD Pro model further enhanced its off-road prowess with Fox shocks, making it suitable for adventurous families.

Form and function

2021 Lexus GX

5/10

2022 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

The 2021 Lexus GX's interior ergonomics reflected its age, with limited legroom and an awkward steering wheel position. The dashboard design provided excellent outward visibility, but forward visibility was hindered by the tall hood. Storage options were limited, with small centre-console storage and cupholders. The GX offered three rows of seating for seven, but the third row was best suited for children, and accessing it was challenging. Cargo space was limited, with only 1,833 litres available with the second and third rows folded.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia prioritized passenger comfort, offering spacious and comfortable seating across all three rows. Three-zone climate control and a power moonroof added to the comfort. The Sequoia excelled in storage, with ample space in the centre console, glove compartment, and door pockets. The cargo compartment offered 535 litres of space behind the third row, expanding to 1,886 litres with the third row folded, and a massive 3,401 litres with both rows folded flat, making it ideal for family adventures.

Technology

2021 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Toyota Sequoia

6/10

The 2021 Lexus GX was light on tech features, lacking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The standard infotainment system had outdated graphics and limited functionality. However, analog controls were available for most functions, providing a straightforward interface. The 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system was a highlight, but overall, the tech offerings were minimal for a luxury SUV.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia's infotainment system felt outdated, with a 7-inch touchscreen and a clunky operating system. However, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility were standard, along with Bluetooth connectivity. The Sequoia Platinum and TRD Pro models added navigation and a 14-speaker JBL audio system. While the Sequoia lacked modern powertrain technology, it featured LED lighting and a rear backup camera, enhancing its practicality.

Safety

2021 Lexus GX

6/10

2022 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

The 2021 Lexus GX came with the Lexus Safety System+ bundle, including a pre-collision system, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were standard, but the GX lacked some advanced safety features found in other Lexus models.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia was equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense P suite, offering pre-collision system, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high beams. The Sequoia also featured the STAR safety system, including stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. A full complement of airbags and other safety features ensured passenger protection.
