2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact SUV like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must. Competitors include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Acura RDX, Porsche Macan, and others.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is for the Korean automaker as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX retained a design reminiscent of its first-generation model from 2002, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the most notable updates. Inside, the cabin quality was impeccable, showcasing the smooth refinement Lexus was known for, with a quiet atmosphere only occasionally interrupted by the V8 engine's faint roar. The GX was available in Standard, Premium, and Executive trims, with prices ranging from $72,100 to $83,750, excluding destination charges. The Black Line Special Edition, based on the GX 460 Premium, started at $80,550.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV70 boasted a modern design with styling cues from the G70 compact luxury sedan, particularly above the belt-line. The split-bar headlights and chrome line added a coupe-like SUV aesthetic without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a testament to luxury, with top-notch materials and a design that was both contemporary and classic. The climate controls were integrated into a curving bezel, and the touchscreen seamlessly rose from the dash. The GV70 offered a range of trims and powertrains, including the gas-powered 2.5T and 3.5T, as well as the Electrified GV70.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. Despite its hefty curb weight of 2,325 kilograms, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds, aided by its torque. The six-speed automatic transmission paired with a full-time 4WD system, distributing power 40% to the front and 60% to the rear wheels. The GX's fuel consumption was estimated at 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres, with a slightly better result of 14.0 L/100 km during testing. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) enhanced stability and off-road capability, though the steering and brake pedal were noted as less appealing.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, and a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine with 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery with dual motors, delivering 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. The electric GV70 had a range of 383 kilometres and could fast charge from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes. The GV70's handling was well-rounded, balancing comfort and sportiness.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat and clear visibility. Its tall, narrow, and short design made it maneuverable, though the steering required effort. The interior featured comfortable seats and physical controls, but the arrangement of knobs was confusing. The Black Line Special Edition included NuLuxe upholstery and heated and ventilated front seats. The third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space, with a cumbersome tailgate design. Cargo capacity was limited to 1,833 litres with the second-row seat folded.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided 1,611 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 818 litres with them in use. It featured a hands-free power liftgate and ample storage solutions in the centre console. The front seats were easily adjustable, but rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-seat adjustments for comfort. The rear bench reclined for added comfort.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, eliminating the need for the outdated Remote Touch Interface. It included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation, along with a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services. The stereo controls were awkwardly placed, but the dual-screen view and voice recognition were highlights. Intuitive Parking Assist was standard, with optional surround-view and terrain-view cameras.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menus. The GV70 included four USB ports, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a nine-speaker stereo. Available features included ambient lighting, a digital instrument panel, and a Lexicon 18-speaker audio system.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2023 Genesis GV70

9/10

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. It also had blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services. However, it missed some advanced safety technologies found in competitors.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and highway driving assist. The 2.5T Advance Plus added a blind-spot camera and 360-degree parking camera, while the Prestige grade included reverse automatic emergency braking. The Electrified GV70 came with most of these features as standard. The GV70 received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.
