2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact SUV like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must. Competitors include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Acura RDX, Porsche Macan, and others.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is for the Korean automaker as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

2023 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2023 Nissan Rogue is critical to the automaker’s success. It’s been the number one seller for the brand in Canada for years, even before Nissan redesigned the Rogue two years ago. Last year, Nissan added a new turbocharged engine. Now, for the 2023 model year, the Rogue SV is available with a new Midnight Edition package that blacks out the exterior trim. Still, the Rogue faces fresh competition from the redesigned Honda CR-V and Kia Sportage, the all-new Mazda CX-50, and a plug-in hybrid Mitsubishi Outlander.

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

8/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 was a striking compact luxury SUV, drawing design inspiration from its sedan counterpart, the G70. Its exterior featured split-bar headlights and a distinctive chrome line that elegantly curved from behind the rear window, giving it a coupe-like appearance without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70's cabin was a testament to luxury, with top-notch materials and impeccable fit and finish. The design was both contemporary and classic, with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that seamlessly rose from the dash. The GV70's dash was equipped with a full touchscreen, a rotary dial, and button controls, offering a user-friendly interface. The physical rollers on the centre console and steering wheel were a nod to practicality, providing a tactile experience superior to touch capacitive controls.

In contrast, the 2023 Nissan Rogue was a more conservative design, with proper proportions and chiseled styling that conveyed a rugged sense of purpose. The Rogue's appeal lay in its handsome exterior and practical design, making it a popular choice among consumers. The Platinum trim of the Rogue offered a touch of luxury with features like two-tone paint, diamond-pattern leather seats, and a host of upscale upgrades. The interior was designed for comfort, with soft-touch materials and controls that met the quality standards of the compact SUV segment. However, the Rogue's design was more about functionality than luxury, focusing on practicality and ease of use.

Performance

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered a choice between two powerful engines. The 2.5T model was equipped with a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. For those seeking more power, the 3.5T model featured a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine, producing 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, providing a refined and well-rounded driving experience. The GV70's handling was a blend of comfort and sharpness, allowing for confident cornering and a smooth ride. The Electrified GV70, with its 77.4-kWh battery and dual electric motors, offered 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower for short bursts. It had a range of 383 kilometres and could fast charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 18 minutes.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, on the other hand, featured a new turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine with a variable compression design, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This engine was paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and offered front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available on higher trims. The Rogue's performance was responsive in urban settings, but it lacked passing power on the highway. The CVT's simulated gear changes could feel dramatic, and the engine's three-cylinder configuration resulted in some vibration and an unusual note in the cabin. The Rogue's fuel economy was slightly below expectations, averaging 8.1 L/100 km in combined driving. The SUV's handling was enhanced by brake-induced ride quality and cornering features, providing a secure and consistent driving experience.

Form and function

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered 1,611 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded and 818 litres with the seats in use, making it competitive in the compact luxury SUV segment. The GV70's interior featured large cupholders in the centre console, a helpful tray with a retractable lid, and a standard hands-free power liftgate. While the front seats were comfortable and easy to adjust, the rear seats had tighter legroom, requiring front-row occupants to slide their seats forward for more space. The rear bench could recline for added comfort.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue, designed as a replacement for the traditional family car, provided ample space for four passengers, with the option to squeeze in a fifth. The Platinum trim offered premium features like a triple-zone automatic climate control system, a dual-panel panoramic sunroof, and heated front seats. The Rogue's Zero Gravity seat designs provided comfort, though the rear seats were less comfortable due to low-mounted cushions and diamond-shaped quilted pleats. The Rogue's cargo space was generous, with up to 1,028 litres behind the back seat and 2,064 litres with the seats folded. The Divide-N-Hide feature allowed for versatile cargo configurations, and the hands-free power liftgate added convenience.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with large icons and logical menu navigation. The GV70 also featured a rotary dial for scrolling and selecting, though its proximity to the rotary shifter could cause confusion. Additional tech features included four USB ports, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an available Lexicon 18-speaker audio system.

The 2023 Nissan Rogue used an older infotainment system with an 8-inch or available 9-inch touchscreen display. The test vehicle had the larger screen, Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio, wireless Apple CarPlay, wired Android Auto, and a navigation system. The voice recognition technology was limited, struggling with requests outside of basic commands. The Rogue also featured a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display and a head-up display, both of which worked well. The Bose premium audio system provided decent sound quality, and the wireless smartphone charging pad added convenience.

Safety

2023 Nissan Rogue

7/10

The 2023 Genesis GV70 was equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, driver attention monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The 2.5T Advance Plus trim added a blind-spot camera system and a 360-degree parking camera system, while the Prestige grade included reverse automatic emergency braking. The Electrified GV70 came standard with much of this equipment. The GV70 received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

The 2023 Nissan Rogue also offered a robust array of safety features, with standard equipment including 10 airbags, a rear-seat reminder system, and Safety Shield 360. This suite included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, rear automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. Higher trims offered ProPilot Assist with Navi-link, combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centring assistance. The Rogue earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), though it received lower scores in some specific crash tests.
