2022 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a two-row crossover compact SUV with frameless, unibody construction, riding on a platform that was all-new for 2021 and shared with the next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. It comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD) and in five trim levels. In Canada, FWD prices start at $29,148 before the $1,860 destination fees and AWD at $31,448, equating to a $650 increase for both models compared to the 2021 model year. All-wheel drive costs $2,300 on lower trim levels and is standard on higher trims. And those prices include a new, more powerful engine and a new transmission. At a fuel consumption as low as 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres combined, the 2022 Rogue is the current leader in its non-hybrid compact crossover SUV class.

2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Reviews Summary

The Volkswagen ID.4 electric car is still relatively new to the marketplace (it debuted for the 2021 model year) but VW is already making some important updates to keep it competitive and fulfil goals set when this compact electric SUV first launched.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 adds a new base model and a smaller 62-kilowatt-hour battery pack alongside the carryover 82-kWh to increase affordability. VW will also begin sourcing cars for its North American dealerships from the same Chattanooga, Tennessee, factory that builds the gasoline-powered Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. The automaker has been discussing this since the ID.4 was unveiled, but at first cars for our market came from Zwickau, Germany.

The 2023 ID.4 retains single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) and dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) powertrain options, but gets revised exterior and interior styling, some software changes, and a few more standard tech features and driver aids.

The new-for-2023 base model is dubbed simply ID.4, slotting below the ID.4 Pro and ID.4 Pro AWD. We recently spent a day on a test drive with the U.S. equivalent of the ID.4 Pro AWD model, along with a shorter drive in a base ID.4 model.

2022 Nissan Rogue

7/10

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

The 2022 Nissan Rogue continued to build on its established reputation as a top seller in the compact SUV segment. Its design, which had matured significantly in recent years, featured a more sophisticated and grown-up appearance. The exterior boasted Nissan's signature V-motion grille, multi-level LED headlights, and a sleek floating roof design. Inside, the Rogue offered a layered dash with contrasting colours and surfaces, creating a refined and detailed look. The centre console was a standout feature, with an electronic gear selector lever that freed up space for additional storage. The cabin was equipped with Nissan's Zero Gravity bucket-style front seats, providing comfort and support, while the second row offered ample legroom for passengers. Overall, the Rogue's fit and finish were exemplary, with high-quality materials, especially in the top-tier Platinum model.

In contrast, the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 presented a modern and minimalist design, with subtle styling changes for the model year. The front and rear bumpers received updates to improve aerodynamics, and the rear VW logo now illuminated. While the ID.4 didn't have the traditional SUV profile, it offered a spacious interior with more legroom and headroom than many other affordable EVs. The cabin featured a minimalist design with leatherette upholstery made partly from recycled fibres. The centre console was updated for 2023, providing a better spot for a phone and a conventional lid. The ID.4's interior was functional and practical, with three-zone climate control and heated rear seats available. Despite its EV nature, the ID.4 aimed to provide a familiar experience for new EV buyers.

Performance

2022 Nissan Rogue

2023 Volkswagen ID.4

8/10

The 2022 Nissan Rogue's performance was enhanced by its new 1.5-litre VC-Turbo engine, which delivered 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This represented an 11% increase in horsepower and a 24% increase in torque compared to the previous model. The engine's variable compression technology allowed for improved efficiency and responsiveness, providing a lively driving experience. The Rogue's fuel consumption was impressive, with estimates of 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city and 6.5 on the highway. The CVT transmission offered a wider range of gear ratios, enhancing acceleration and responsiveness. The Rogue's chassis and suspension provided a smooth and controlled ride, with minimal body roll and precise steering.

The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 offered a choice of battery packs, with the base model featuring a 62-kWh battery and the Pro model equipped with an 82-kWh pack. The single electric motor RWD models produced 201 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, while the dual-motor AWD version delivered 295 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque, achieving 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. The smaller battery pack reduced curb weight, improving acceleration and handling. The ID.4's regenerative braking system allowed for energy recovery, but it didn't offer one-pedal driving. While the ID.4 provided strong acceleration, it lacked the handling prowess of hot hatchbacks, with noticeable body roll on twisty roads.
