2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2022 GMC Yukon Reviews Summary

No longer the exclusive truck-only brand for General Motors now that Buick has gone all-in on SUVs, GMC nevertheless holds a unique position in the automaker's product portfolio. Offering a lineup of "Professional Grade" trucks and SUVs with premium features, enhanced capabilities, and unique exterior and interior designs, GMC toes the line between Chevrolet and Cadillac.

All-new for the 2021 model year, the Yukon full-size SUV gets a standard 12-inch driver information centre and enhanced connectivity for 2022, among other changes. The 2022 GMC Yukon is available in four trim levels: SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali.

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX retained a design reminiscent of its first-generation model from 2002, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the most notable updates. Inside, the cabin quality was impeccable, showcasing the smooth refinement Lexus was known for, with a quiet interior that only allowed the faint roar of the V8 engine to be heard. The GX was available in Standard, Premium, and Executive trims, with prices ranging from $72,100 to $83,750, excluding destination charges. The Black Line Special Edition, based on the GX 460 Premium, started at $80,550.

In contrast, the 2022 GMC Yukon embraced chrome to stand out among its peers, especially in the Denali trim, which featured a vast, multi-dimensional grille. The Denali's front was almost entirely chrome, giving it a commanding presence. The Yukon also offered a unique look with the off-road-oriented AT4 trim, which included a dark grille and skid plate. Inside, the Yukon boasted a spacious cabin with standard seating for eight, or seven with second-row captain's chairs. The Denali trim offered four exclusive interior designs, with our test vehicle featuring the Teak/Light Shale colour combo, adding a premium touch with contrasting colours and natural wood details.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2022 GMC Yukon

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. Despite its 2,325-kilogram curb weight, the GX managed a 7.8-second sprint to 60 mph, aided by its torque. The GX's maximum towing capacity was 2,948 kilograms, supported by a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system. The GX's drag coefficient was 0.35, contributing to a fuel consumption estimate of 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) enhanced stability and off-road capability, though the steering and brake pedal were less refined.

The 2022 GMC Yukon offered three engine choices, including a 5.3-litre V8 with 355 horsepower and a 6.2-litre V8 with 420 horsepower. A 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine was also available, producing 277 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque. All engines were paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The Yukon's maximum towing capacity was 3,810 kilograms with the 5.3-litre engine and Max Trailering Package. The Yukon featured independent rear suspension, improving ride quality and handling, though some bouncing was noted on rough surfaces. The optional air ride adaptive suspension further enhanced comfort and off-road capability.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX offered an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat, providing clear visibility. Its tall, narrow, and short design made it maneuverable in various settings, though the steering required effort. The interior featured comfortable seats and physical controls, though some switchgear was outdated. The Black Line Special Edition added NuLuxe upholstery and black ash wood trim. The third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access, reducing cargo space. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, with limited cargo capacity behind the third row.

The 2022 GMC Yukon improved third-row access and space with a redesign, offering 886 mm of legroom. Cargo space behind the third row increased to 722 litres, thanks to a longer wheelbase and independent rear suspension. The second-row seats folded flat, with power-folding options available. The Denali trim featured a power-sliding centre console with hidden storage. Power-retractable assist steps eased entry and exit, though they could dirty pant legs in wet conditions. The pushbutton transmission controls required acclimation but were intuitive once familiar.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX introduced a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, replacing the outdated Remote Touch Interface. The system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation, with a CD player for nostalgia. The stereo controls were awkwardly placed below off-roading controls, making them difficult to use. The infotainment display offered a dual-screen view, and voice recognition was quick and accurate. Intuitive Parking Assist became standard, with optional surround-view and terrain-view cameras.

The 2022 GMC Yukon featured a 12-inch reconfigurable driver information centre and a 15-inch head-up display, providing essential information and safety alerts. The 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system included Google Built-In, wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The Denali trim offered a Bose 14-speaker audio system, though sound quality was underwhelming. The rear-seat media system included dual 12.6-inch touchscreens, compatible with various media formats, though adapters were needed for some devices.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 GMC Yukon

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safety Connect services were also standard. However, the GX lacked some advanced safety technologies found in competitors, which could be a drawback for some buyers.

The 2022 GMC Yukon came with GMC's Pro Safety suite, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assistance. Pro Safety Plus added blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear park assist. The Safety Alert Seat and rear camera mirror enhanced safety further. The Yukon received a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with five stars for side crash protection but only three stars for rollover resistance. The IIHS had not tested the current-generation Yukon.
