2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE Reviews Summary

Once ridiculed and now increasing in popularity at an alarming rate, the SUV coupe, a new vehicle type originated by BMW and copied by others to varying degrees of success, is taking over gated suburban enclaves. From Acura (remember the ZDX?) to Volvo (C40 Recharge coming right up), automakers are trying the concept on for size, and it doesn’t always fit. However, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 Coupe, a low-roofed version of the Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class SUV, is one recipe that works.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 Coupe presented a design that was neither offensive nor groundbreaking, with its Selenite Gray paint and 22-inch forged aluminum wheels giving it a sleek, athletic appearance reminiscent of a high-end sneaker. The absence of the V8-powered AMG GLE 63 S Coupe variant left the AMG GLE 53 Coupe as the primary offering, priced at $99,900 Canadian. Inside, the GLE 53 Coupe was luxurious, featuring high-end materials like Nappa premium leather and a dual-screen setup that added a modern touch. However, the lack of traditional controls posed a learning curve for new users, though familiarity eventually led to a seamless experience.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX boasted a commanding presence with its large spindle grille and significant ground clearance. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned with limited availability, offering exclusive paint options. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's design leaned towards functionality, with a short wheelbase and minimal overhangs, making it adept at off-road challenges. The interior, however, was marred by an abundance of plastic, a stark contrast to its luxury aspirations. Yet, it offered features like heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery, maintaining some level of luxury.

Performance

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE 53 Coupe was powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-6 engine, delivering 429 horsepower at 6,100 rpm and 384 pound-feet of torque from 1,800 to 5,800 rpm. The EQ Boost, a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, provided additional power and improved fuel efficiency, with a consumption rate of 12.7 L/100 km. The GLE 53 Coupe featured a SpeedShift nine-speed automatic transmission and an AMG Performance 4Matic+ AWD system, offering various driving modes and an optional AMG sport exhaust system. The adaptive damping control air suspension and AMG Active Ride Control suspension enhanced performance, while the speed-sensitive variable-ratio power steering facilitated urban maneuverability. The GLE Coupe excelled in both city and highway settings, with Sport+ mode unleashing its full performance potential.

The 2023 Lexus GX, on the other hand, was defined by its naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission. While it lacked the power of newer engines, the GX's V8 offered a satisfying sound and linear power delivery. Its towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms was respectable, though its fuel economy of 14.5 L/100 km was less competitive. The GX's weight affected its handling, but its roll was predictable and controllable. The Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential and 4WD system enhanced its off-road capabilities, making it suitable for challenging terrains.

Form and function

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe accommodated up to five passengers, though it was more comfortable for four. The front seats offered numerous adjustments, heating, ventilation, and massage functions, ensuring comfort on long drives. The back seat provided ample legroom, and the cargo hold offered 655 litres of space, expandable to 1,790 litres with the rear seats folded. Additional comfort features included a four-zone climate control system and an Air Balance in-cabin fragrance system, enhancing the luxury experience.

The 2023 Lexus GX offered practical storage solutions, with a deep centre console bin and conveniently placed cupholders. The decision to retain hard buttons over haptic-touch interfaces was a welcome choice for ease of use. The second row was comfortable, with captain's chairs and adequate legroom, while the third row was cramped and best suited for emergencies. The side-hinged trunk door required effort to open, and the cargo space was limited to 328 litres, expandable to 1,832 litres with both rear rows folded.

Technology

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

9/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE featured the MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens, offering navigation, satellite radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was user-friendly, with natural voice recognition and multiple interaction methods. Optional features included gesture recognition, augmented video navigation, and a Burmester 3D surround-sound system, enhancing the technological experience.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already felt dated. The 10.3-inch touchscreen offered SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and smartphone compatibility, but the graphics and responsiveness lagged behind competitors. The GX excelled in off-road technology, with a 4WD system, downhill assist, and KDSS air suspension. The optional multi-terrain monitor and crawl control further enhanced its off-road prowess.

Safety

2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE

10/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe came equipped with numerous safety features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The Intelligent Drive Package added 13 driver assistance systems, enhancing safety and collision avoidance. The GLE's lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control were finely tuned, though crash-test results were unavailable.

The 2023 Lexus GX, despite its older design, included the Lexus Safety System+ with features like automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. While lacking some advanced features, the GX's safety systems were commendable, though crash-test results were also unavailable.
