2021 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

Since its launch in 1997, the Toyota RAV4 has ridden a wave of crossover SUV popularity to become one of Toyota’s bestselling models. Introduced for the 2019 model year, the current-generation RAV4 tries to offer the rugged style of a traditional SUV, but underneath it’s still a car-based crossover pitched against the likes of the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Because it’s only in its third model year, this fifth-generation RAV4 doesn’t get many updates for 2021. The biggest news is the addition of the RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid to the lineup, but that model actually went on sale last year.

Toyota offers compact SUV buyers more choices than most competitors. The Toyota RAV4 LE, XLE, and Limited trim levels are available with hybrid and non-hybrid powertrains. Toyota also offers the gasoline-only Premium package for the XLE grade and the RAV4 Trail grade with available TRD Off-Road package, plus the RAV4 Hybrid XSE. The RAV4 Prime is also available in two trim levels—SE and XSE.

This review will focus on the gasoline RAV4. Our test car was a RAV4 Trail with the TRD Off-Road package, which joined the lineup for the 2020 model year and is the first RAV4 model tuned by Toyota Racing Development, the automaker’s North American performance division.

2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

Look and feel

2021 Toyota RAV4

8/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 presented a rugged exterior that was reminiscent of a traditional SUV, with its boxy fender flares, chiseled taillights, and a scowling front end. This design was a departure from previous RAV4 generations and most other compact crossovers, giving it an aggressive look that stood out in the family car segment. Despite its bold styling, the RAV4 was built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, which was shared with other Toyota models like the Camry and Sienna, making it mechanically ordinary beneath its striking exterior.

In contrast, the 2022 Lexus GX maintained a design that was easily confused with its first-generation predecessor, save for the signature Lexus spindle grille and modern lighting elements. While the exterior appeared dated, the interior quality was unmistakably Lexus, with a focus on smooth refinement and quietness, only interrupted by the V8 engine's faint roar. The cabin was crafted with care, offering a luxurious experience despite the vehicle's aging design.

Performance

2021 Toyota RAV4

6/10

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 was equipped with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It offered standard front-wheel drive with an optional all-wheel drive. The engine achieved 40% thermal efficiency, a level typically found in racing engines, and was known for its high-revving nature. However, the transmission's sluggishness and the steering's lack of feel detracted from the driving experience. The RAV4's off-road capabilities were enhanced in the Trail and TRD Off-Road models, which featured torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, increased ground clearance, and a towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

The 2022 Lexus GX, with its 4.6-litre V8 engine, delivered 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, allowing for a 7.8-second sprint to 60 mph. The engine was paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system, providing a 6,500-pound towing capacity. Despite its high drag coefficient and hefty curb weight, the GX managed a fuel consumption rate of 14.0 L/100 km during testing. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) improved stability and off-road capability, making the GX a competent performer on various terrains.

Form and function

2021 Toyota RAV4

8/10

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 offered a spacious interior with ample headroom and good outward visibility, though legroom was slightly lacking compared to competitors. The front seats were comfortable, but the rear seats were less so, with flat cushions. Cargo space was generous, with 1,059 litres available with the rear seats up and 1,977 litres with them folded. The interior featured oversized knobs and easy-to-use controls, though storage space was somewhat limited.

The 2022 Lexus GX provided an elevated driving position and clear visibility, with comfortable seating and well-padded interiors. However, the rear seat access was challenging due to narrow door openings, and the third-row seat was cramped and difficult to access. Cargo space was limited, with 328 litres behind the third row and 1,833 litres with all seats folded. The side-swinging tailgate further complicated loading, especially in tight spaces.

Technology

2021 Toyota RAV4

7/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 came standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with most trims featuring a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims offered larger screens. The infotainment system was user-friendly but lacked advanced features like a head-up display. The RAV4 also offered a JBL premium audio system and multiple USB ports.

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, eliminating the need for the outdated Remote Touch Interface. It included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation, along with a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services. The system offered a dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition, though the placement of stereo controls was less intuitive.

Safety

2021 Toyota RAV4

8/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Toyota RAV4 received a "Top Safety Pick" rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA. It came with Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, which included features like forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind spot monitoring and a 360-degree camera system were also available.

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings due to its age but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and other safety features. However, it missed some advanced technologies found in competitors, such as lane-keeping assist and semi-autonomous driving systems.
