Reviews Summary

The Subaru faithful wanted a replacement for the discontinued three-row Tribeca midsize SUV, and the Ascent answered the call when it went on sale in 2019. In 2023, for its fifth model year, the Ascent got a light refresh with revised styling, updated technology, and a new trim level with plenty of equipment and a trendy blacked-out look. Now, the 2024 Subaru Ascent continues with almost no changes, while several competitors in the segment receive significant updates.

Verdict: Can the 2024 Subaru Ascent fend off refreshed rivals in the midsize three-row SUV segment? The Ascent has plenty going for it, from standard all-wheel drive and substantial ground clearance to affordable prices and impressive safety ratings. But it comes across as a little quirky among mainstream choices, which could work in or against its favour.

Reviews Summary

Lexus has sold three-row SUVs in the past. But they were either originally engineered for serious off-roading (GX), too expensive (LX), or too cramped for third-row passengers (RX L). The 2024 Lexus TX is none of these things, making it perfect for the typical three-row luxury SUV buyer who spends almost all their time on paved roads. Overall, based on our week testing a TX 350, this new Lexus SUV gets most things right.

Look and feel

2024 Subaru Ascent

7/10

2024 Lexus TX

5/10

The 2024 Lexus TX was based on the Toyota Grand Highlander, yet it distinguished itself as a luxury SUV. Its upscale appearance was evident, especially with the 22-inch wheels included in the TX 350 Executive packages, which significantly enhanced its presence. The styling of the TX was more subdued compared to other Lexus models, offering a conservative design that might appeal to those previously put off by the brand's bolder aesthetics. The TX was available in three model series: TX 350, TX 500h F Sport Performance, and TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid, with prices ranging from $72,036 to $87,486, although the TX 550h+ was not yet available for sale.

In contrast, the 2024 Subaru Ascent struggled with its styling, as the latest refresh introduced some controversial design elements. Despite this, the Ascent continued to offer a range of trims in Canada, including Convenience, Touring, Onyx, Limited, and Premier, with prices from $44,674 to $57,674. The Premier trim, which we tested, included features like a panoramic sunroof, premium Nappa leather upholstery, and a surround-view camera. The interior design was functional and practical, though it lacked the sophistication and modernity seen in some competitors.

The 2024 Lexus TX 350 was equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. Lexus claimed it could accelerate to 100 km/h in about eight seconds, though it felt quicker due to its torque delivery. The official fuel economy rating was 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, but during testing, it averaged 13.8 L/100 km. The ride and handling were well-balanced, with a firm yet comfortable suspension and accurate steering. However, the brake pedal felt too soft, though it was easy to modulate for smooth stops.

The 2024 Subaru Ascent featured a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. It was paired with a CVT and standard AWD, allowing it to tow up to 2,270 kilograms. The Ascent excelled in various driving conditions, from city streets to off-road trails, and handled well in most situations. However, it struggled on twisty mountain roads due to its weight and suspension tuning. The fuel economy ratings were 12.3 L/100 km in the city, 9.4 on the highway, and 11.0 combined, with test results showing 14.0 L/100 km in the city and 12.6 L/100 km overall.

Form and function

2024 Lexus TX

9/10

The 2024 Lexus TX addressed previous shortcomings in Lexus's three-row SUVs by offering a more spacious and comfortable interior. The TX 350 test unit featured premium materials and standard heated and ventilated front seats. The second-row bench seat was less welcoming, but the third-row seat was habitable for adults, providing better leg support and visibility than previous models. Cargo space was generous, with 572 litres behind the third row, 1,625 litres with the third row folded, and 2,746 litres with the second row down. However, the second-row legroom was limited, affecting comfort when accommodating third-row passengers.

The 2024 Subaru Ascent prioritized functionality, with features like a dashboard shelf, large cupholders, and backpack pegs. The Premier trim offered comfortable front seats with premium Nappa leather, though the front passenger seat lacked a height adjuster. The rear doors opened wide, facilitating easy loading of children and cargo. The third-row seat was suitable for short trips, with adequate leg support and storage space. Cargo capacity was 458 litres behind the third row, 1,232 litres with the third row folded, and 2,140 litres with the second row down, slightly reduced with the panoramic sunroof.

Technology

2024 Lexus TX

5/10

The 2024 Lexus TX came with a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 14-inch touchscreen display. The Lexus Interface infotainment system included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a Drive Connect subscription offering cloud-based navigation and a digital assistant. However, the head-up display's unmarked steering wheel controls were frustrating, especially for those wearing polarized sunglasses. The optional 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system provided excellent sound quality.

The 2024 Subaru Ascent featured the Starlink infotainment system with an 11.6-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Higher trims offered a navigation system and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. While the system worked well, the display washed out in direct sunlight, and the native voice-recognition system was subpar. Physical buttons and knobs were available for common functions, and the Premier trim included a surround-view camera and digital rearview camera.

Safety

2024 Lexus TX

8/10

The 2024 Lexus TX was equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and more. Proactive Drive Assist was also available, though it was not always smooth. Additional safety features included blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and optional parking sensors. The traffic jam assist system provided hands-free driving at low speeds but was not available at higher speeds.

The 2024 Subaru Ascent was known for its safety, receiving five-star ratings from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS. The EyeSight package included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. However, the lane-centring assist technology was problematic, causing issues during testing. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims, along with a Driver Focus monitoring system.
