2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

2024 BMW X5 Reviews Summary

Our test vehicle for this review was the X5 xDrive50e, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the X5 midsize SUV, but it’s just one of several X5 models you can buy. The xDrive40i features a satisfying turbocharged six-cylinder engine (with electric assist in the plug-in hybrid), while the M60i features a turbocharged V8 engine. Maximum performance is available in the comically fun X5 M Competition. Drive any of them, though, and it’s easy to understand why the X5 is one of BMW’s best-selling models.

Verdict: Newer BMWs are losing what has always made this automaker’s cars and SUVs appealing to people who like to drive. Fortunately, the 2024 BMW X5 hasn’t succumbed to the trend. In xDrive50e specification, it remains a delight to drive while supplying about 63 kilometres of electric-only range before its gasoline-fueled turbo six turns on.

Look and feel

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

2024 BMW X5

9/10

The 2023 Lexus GX made a bold statement with its massive spindle grille and 206 millimetres of ground clearance, standing tall at 1,885 millimetres. Its front end appeared ready to conquer the road, framed by large headlights that accentuated its distinctive face. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned with limited availability, offering exclusive paint options like Nori Green Pearl. Despite its imposing front, the GX's side profile revealed a surprisingly short wheelbase of 2,789 mm, making it seem more compact. Its design leaned towards a sleeker aesthetic compared to Toyota's blocky trends, with flared fenders adding to its robust look. Inside, the GX's luxury badge was somewhat undermined by the presence of plastic materials, though it still offered heated and cooled seats, a power-retracting steering wheel, and impressive leather upholstery.

The 2024 BMW X5, last redesigned in 2019, maintained a timeless style, though the M Sport treatment gave it a station wagon-like appearance. Our test vehicle featured optional 21-inch wheels, enhancing its look. The X5 offered a range of powertrains, including a turbocharged inline six-cylinder, a PHEV, and a turbo V8. The xDrive50e PHEV model, with its Brooklyn Grey paint and comprehensive equipment packages, stood out. The 2024 model received a light styling refresh and introduced the BMW Curved Display, modernizing the interior with reduced physical controls. Despite these updates, the X5 retained high-quality materials and construction, tying it to BMW's legacy.

Performance

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 BMW X5

10/10

The 2023 Lexus GX was defined by its V8 engine, delivering 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 provided a satisfying linear power delivery. However, its fuel economy was less impressive, with estimates of 16.2 L/100 km in the city and 12.3 on the highway. The GX's 2,948-kilogram towing capacity was notable, though it lagged behind some competitors. Despite its weight, the GX offered predictable handling, with strong brakes and a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential enhancing its 4WD capabilities.

The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e PHEV featured a new mild-hybrid system, offering 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. It boasted a 63-kilometre electric-only range and a combined fuel economy of 10.6 L/100 km. The PHEV's electric motor and battery upgrades improved performance, with a 0-96 km/h acceleration time of 4.6 seconds. The adaptive damping air suspension masked its weight, providing a smooth ride. The X5 excelled in dynamic driving, with quick steering and robust brakes. Its ability to recharge the battery during drives added to its appeal, making it a standout choice for those seeking efficiency and performance.

Form and function

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 BMW X5

8/10

The 2023 Lexus GX offered ample cubby space, with a deep centre console bin and convenient cupholders. However, it lacked modern USB-C ports, sticking with USB-A. The GX's physical controls were a blessing for those preferring hard buttons over touchscreens. The adjustable centre console lid was a thoughtful touch, and the second-row captain’s chairs provided comfort. Unfortunately, the third row was cramped, and the side-hinged trunk door posed challenges. Cargo space was limited, with only 328 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,832 litres with seats folded.

The 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e accommodated five passengers comfortably, with a 937-litre cargo area expandable to 2,016 litres. Its split liftgate design offered a convenient seating spot but required stretching to access deep cargo. The X5 featured standard Sensafin artificial leather, with optional 20-way power-adjustable seats offering heating and ventilation. Rear passengers enjoyed comfort, enhanced by a panoramic sunroof and sunshades. While the X5 no longer offered a third-row seat, its spacious interior and thoughtful features made it a practical luxury SUV.

Technology

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 BMW X5

7/10

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, revamped in 2022, already felt dated. The 10.3-inch touchscreen was an improvement, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but lagged behind newer Lexus models. The inclusion of a CD player highlighted its outdated tech. However, the GX excelled in off-road capability, with a real 4WD system, downhill assist, and KDSS air suspension. Optional features like a multi-terrain monitor and crawl control enhanced its rugged appeal.

The 2024 BMW X5 introduced the BMW Curved Display, combining a 12.3-inch digital panel with a 14.9-inch touchscreen. Running on iDrive 8.5, it offered wireless connectivity, SiriusXM, and over-the-air updates. The Intelligent Personal Assistant, however, struggled with voice recognition, impacting its usability. Despite this, the head-up display and augmented video navigation were impressive. The X5's technology suite, though flawed, provided a modern and connected driving experience.

Safety

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

2024 BMW X5

7/10

The 2023 Lexus GX lacked crash test ratings from NHTSA and IIHS, but it featured the Lexus Safety System+ with ADAS, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. Despite its older design, the GX offered a solid suite of safety features.

The 2024 BMW X5 introduced Highway Assistant for hands-free driving, effective in specific conditions but occasionally unpredictable. Its adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assistance performed well, though errant braking was noted. The X5 received high ratings from IIHS, but NHTSA awarded it four stars overall, one short of the maximum.
