2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

2022 Lincoln Nautilus Reviews Summary

The 2022 Lincoln Nautilus is a five-passenger crossover SUV based on the same platform, and using the same powertrains, as the Ford Edge. However, the Nautilus gets the full Lincoln design treatment, from its upscale exterior to its mid-century modern interior. Though the Nautilus is getting old (it was last redesigned for the 2016 model year as the Lincoln MKX), a continuous program of improvement means it is aging gracefully.

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Lincoln Nautilus

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX retained a design reminiscent of its first-generation model from 2002, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the most notable updates. Inside, the cabin quality was impeccable, showcasing the smooth refinement Lexus was known for, although the overall design theme remained similar to its predecessors. The interior was quiet, with only the faint sound of the V8 engine audible to passengers. The GX was available in Standard, Premium, and Executive trims, with prices ranging from $72,100 to $83,750, excluding destination charges.

In contrast, the 2022 Lincoln Nautilus presented a more modern and attractive design, with enough detailing to give it character without appearing awkward. The interior featured premium leather upholstery and ambient lighting, creating a luxurious atmosphere. However, some elements, like the centre console design, appeared less refined. The Nautilus Reserve, the only model available in Canada, had an MSRP of $59,800, excluding a $2,395 destination charge. The optional Ultra Comfort 22-way power-adjustable front seats with massage functions were a highlight, providing exceptional comfort for long drives.

Performance

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

2022 Lincoln Nautilus

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX was equipped with a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system. Despite its hefty curb weight of 2,325 kilograms, the GX managed a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds and a towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms. However, its fuel consumption was high, with an estimated 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. The GX's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System improved stability and off-road capability, but the steering was slow and heavy, and the brake pedal was touchy.

The 2022 Lincoln Nautilus offered a standard turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with 250 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, while a twin-turbocharged 2.7-litre V6 with 335 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque was available for an additional cost. The Nautilus featured an 8-speed automatic transmission and AWD in Canada. It offered Comfort, Normal, and Sport driving modes, with Normal mode providing the best balance. The V6 engine had a fuel consumption rating of 11.2 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving. The Nautilus excelled on long road trips, offering a quiet and comfortable ride, although the steering lacked engagement.

Form and function

2022 Lincoln Nautilus

7/10

The 2022 Lexus GX provided an elevated driving position with a 10-way power-adjustable seat and clear visibility. Its tall, narrow design made it easy to manoeuvre, but the steering required extra effort. The interior featured comfortable seats and physical controls, though some were outdated. The Black Line Special Edition offered NuLuxe upholstery and additional features. The third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space, with a maximum capacity of 1,833 litres. The side-swinging tailgate was cumbersome, especially in tight spaces.

The 2022 Lincoln Nautilus boasted a luxurious interior with heated and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, and high-quality materials. The optional 22-way power front seats provided exceptional comfort. Rear passengers enjoyed heated seats and air conditioning vents, but legroom was limited. The Nautilus offered practical storage, though some compartments were hard to access. The hands-free power liftgate revealed a well-finished cargo area with 1,055 litres of space, expandable to 1,948 litres with the rear seats folded.

Technology

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Lincoln Nautilus

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation. The system was user-friendly, with a dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition. However, the placement of stereo controls was awkward, and some off-roading controls were more prominent. The GX also included Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view cameras.

The 2022 Lincoln Nautilus came with a 13.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system running Sync 4 software, offering over-the-air updates, Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The system was intuitive, with physical stereo and climate controls. The Revel audio system provided excellent sound quality. The Nautilus also featured Phone as a Key, allowing smartphone access to the vehicle.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Lincoln Nautilus

8/10

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and more. However, it missed some advanced safety technologies found in competitors. The absence of these features contributed to a favourable driving experience without interference from driving aids.

The 2022 Lincoln Nautilus included Lincoln Co-Pilot360 1.0 with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and more. The Black Label added adaptive cruise control, lane-centring assistance, and a surround-view camera system. The Nautilus received a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and was a Top Safety Pick by IIHS.
