2024 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

The Jeep Wrangler has been the star of the off-roading show for decades, only recently facing real competition in the form of the Ford Bronco. Now five years into its fourth generation, the venerable Wrangler gets a mid-cycle refresh that focuses on technology, safety, and refinement—with just a splash of upgraded capability thrown in for good measure.

2024 Lexus TX Reviews Summary

Lexus has sold three-row SUVs in the past. But they were either originally engineered for serious off-roading (GX), too expensive (LX), or too cramped for third-row passengers (RX L). The 2024 Lexus TX is none of these things, making it perfect for the typical three-row luxury SUV buyer who spends almost all their time on paved roads. Overall, based on our week testing a TX 350, this new Lexus SUV gets most things right.

Look and feel

2024 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler maintained its iconic rugged appearance, characterized by a burly, body-on-frame design that remained consistent across its various models. Notable changes included a redesigned grille, which was shorter and wider, enhancing airflow to the engine bay. The integration of the antenna into the windshield was a clever update, preventing it from snagging on branches during off-road adventures. Additionally, the Wrangler offered a variety of roof options, from traditional soft-tops to power-retractable sunroofs, and allowed for customization with removable doors and foldable windshields, catering to those seeking a true open-air experience.

In contrast, the 2024 Lexus TX, based on the Toyota Grand Highlander, presented a more upscale and conservative design. The TX featured 22-inch wheels in a silver finish, enhancing its luxurious appearance. Its styling was toned down compared to other Lexus models, appealing to those who preferred a more understated look. The TX was available in several model series, including the TX 350, TX 500h F Sport Performance, and TX 550h+ plug-in hybrid, with prices ranging from $72,036 to $87,486. The TX 350, likely the volume-selling version, came with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine and standard all-wheel drive, offering a balance of luxury and performance.

Performance

2024 Jeep Wrangler

8/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler offered a diverse range of powertrains, including a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, a plug-in hybrid version with 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, a 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and a powerful 6.4-litre V8 engine delivering 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. The Wrangler's off-road capabilities were enhanced by various transfer cases, with options like the Command-Trac 4WD system for casual off-roaders and the Rock-Trac transfer case for serious adventurers. The 4xe PHEV model stood out with its 35-kilometre all-electric range and impressive torque, making it a favourite among testers. However, the Wrangler's ride quality on pavement was less refined, with a bumpy ride and vague steering, though improvements in sound deadening helped reduce cabin noise.

The 2024 Lexus TX 350 was equipped with a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, producing 275 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. While its performance was adequate for typical driving situations, the engine's grating note was a drawback. The TX 350's fuel economy was rated at 10.3 litres per 100 kilometres in combined driving, slightly better than its predecessor, the RX L. The TX 350's ride and handling were well-balanced, with a firm yet comfortable suspension and accurate steering. However, the brake pedal felt too soft, though it was easy to modulate for smooth stops. Overall, the TX 350 provided a comfortable and quiet ride, with commendable body motion control.

Form and function

2024 Jeep Wrangler

2024 Lexus TX

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler saw an upgrade in towing capacity, now rated to tow 2,268 kilograms (5,000 pounds) for specific models, thanks to a full-float solid rear axle. Inside, the Wrangler offered heated seats and a heated steering wheel, with new 12-way power adjustable front seats that remained functional even when submerged. The 4xe model featured a 30-amp Power Box, allowing for the use of various accessories powered by its 17.3-kWh battery.

The 2024 Lexus TX addressed previous shortcomings in Lexus's three-row SUVs, offering a more spacious and comfortable interior. The TX 350 test unit featured premium semi-aniline leather and artificial suede upholstery, with heated and ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel as standard in Canada. The second-row seat, while not as welcoming, offered triple-zone climate control and USB charging ports for all rows. The third-row seat was notably more habitable, accommodating adults comfortably. The TX provided ample cargo space, with 572 litres behind the third row and up to 2,746 litres with the second and third rows folded. However, the second-row legroom was limited, impacting comfort when accommodating third-row passengers.

Technology

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler came equipped with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system running Uconnect5, offering a user-friendly interface with cleaner graphics. Standard features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a wireless hotspot and dual Bluetooth phone pairing. The system's speed was notably improved, especially when accessing Off-Road Pages, which provided detailed data on transmission temperature, battery charge, and more.

The 2024 Lexus TX featured a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and a digital rearview mirror, with additional options like a head-up display and a surround-view camera in the Executive packages. The Lexus Interface infotainment system, with its 14-inch touchscreen display, offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a cloud-based navigation system and a digital assistant through a Drive Connect subscription. The TX also included free 10-year subscriptions to Service Connect and Safety Connect, providing features like automatic collision notification and emergency calling. The optional 21-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system delivered impressive sound quality, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Safety

2024 Jeep Wrangler

5/10

2024 Lexus TX

7/10

The 2024 Jeep Wrangler introduced first- and second-row side-curtain airbags, with forward collision warning standard on most models. Optional safety features included blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and park assist. However, the Wrangler lacked lane-keeping assist and other highway assist features. The 2023 Wrangler received four-out-of-five stars for frontal crash protection and three-out-of-five stars for rollover protection from the NHTSA, with expectations for improved ratings in 2024 due to the addition of side curtain airbags.

The 2024 Lexus TX was equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, offering a comprehensive suite of advanced driving assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, lane-keeping assist, and more. Proactive Drive Assist, part of LSS+ 3.0, provided additional braking and steering assistance, though it was not entirely transparent in operation. The TX also featured blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a safe exit assist system, with options for parking sensors, front cross-traffic alert, and traffic jam assist. Overall, LSS+ 3.0 proved effective, though the TX's response to vehicles cutting in was overly cautious.
