2023 Honda CR-V Reviews Summary

A redesigned 2023 Honda CR-V is on sale, improving on the successful formula the automaker has used for more than 25 years. The 2023 CR-V remains one of the roomiest compact crossover SUVs in its class, and it get an overdue infusion of new infotainment systems and safety features that bring it up to par with its many rivals. In addition, with the 2023 CR-V, the hybrid powertrain is available in Canada for the first time. However, in this review, we’ll focus on the 2023 Honda CR-V EX-L trim with the standard turbocharged four-cylinder engine instead of the Honda CR-V Hybrid.

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

Look and feel

2023 Honda CR-V

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V adopted a more refined and slightly aggressive appearance with its blunt nose, grille, long hood, and stretched wheelbase. This sixth-generation model presented a cleaner look compared to its predecessor, though it lacked the distinct personality of the fifth-gen CR-V. The conservative styling was expected to age gracefully. The CR-V EX-L featured 18-inch alloy wheels and dark-tinted rear privacy glass, while the interior boasted leather-wrapped seats, a steering wheel, and a shift knob, elevating the quality over lower trims. The dashboard, inspired by the latest Civic, incorporated metal mesh trim and air vents, creating a clear division between the upper and lower sections. The interior exuded simplicity and quality, with a larger touchscreen infotainment system, power-adjustable front passenger seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and power rear liftgate. Pricing in Canada started at $34,240, excluding fees, with various trims available, including the CR-V EX-L with standard AWD at $43,390 before fees.

The 2023 Lexus GX made a bold statement with its massive spindle grille, 206 millimetres of ground clearance, and an overall height of 1,885 millimetres. The front end appeared ready to conquer the road, framed by substantial headlights. The GX Black Line Special Edition returned for 2023, limited to 3,000 units, available in three paint colours, including the new Eminent White Pearl. Despite its luxury badge, the GX's design leaned towards a sleeker aesthetic compared to Toyota's blocky designs. The interior, however, disappointed with its abundance of plastic materials, which contradicted its luxury status. The GX's low sales volume necessitated cost-effective manufacturing, but it still offered luxury touches like heated and cooled front seats and impressive leather upholstery.

Performance

2023 Honda CR-V

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V retained its turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 190 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 179 lb-ft of torque between 1,700 and 5,000 rpm. While the engine provided ample power for a compact SUV, the continuously variable transmission (CVT) detracted from the driving experience with its droning noise during hard acceleration. Despite this, the CR-V excelled in ride and handling, with a finely tuned suspension, steering, and brakes. It handled various road conditions with ease, offering a comfortable and engaging driving experience. The CR-V achieved impressive fuel economy, averaging 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres on a mountainous route.

The 2023 Lexus GX featured a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. While not the most powerful on paper, the V8 delivered a satisfying linear power delivery and a distinctive sound. The GX's towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms was respectable, but its fuel economy was less appealing, with estimates of 16.2 litres per 100 kilometres in city driving. The GX's weight contributed to predictable and controllable handling, with strong brakes and a Torsen torque-sensing limited-slip differential for improved traction. Despite its age, the GX's driving dynamics remained commendable.

Form and function

2023 Honda CR-V

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V offered a spacious interior, with the second row feeling more generous than the first. The power-adjustable driver's seat provided comfort, and heated front seats and dual-zone climate control were standard. The CR-V excelled in storage options, with a large centre armrest bin, door trays, and a wireless charging pad. The cargo area provided 1,113 litres of space, expandable to 2,166 litres with the rear seats folded. The Hybrid variant had slightly reduced cargo capacity.

The 2023 Lexus GX retained ample cubby space, with a deep centre console bin and convenient cupholders. The decision to use hard buttons instead of haptic-touch interfaces was appreciated. The second row offered comfort with captain's chairs, while the third row was tight for regular use. The GX's cargo space was limited, with 328 litres behind the rear seats, expandable to 1,832 litres with both rows folded. The side-hinged trunk door posed challenges in tight spaces.

Technology

2023 Honda CR-V

7/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V featured a 7-inch digital instrumentation panel and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The EX-L trim added a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless connectivity, SiriusXM, and an upgraded sound system. While the technology was an improvement, it didn't surpass competitors in terms of features.

The 2023 Lexus GX's 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system was a significant upgrade, offering SiriusXM, Bluetooth, and smartphone compatibility. However, it lagged behind newer Lexus models in terms of graphics and responsiveness. The GX excelled in off-road technology, with a real 4WD system, downhill assist, and a multi-terrain select system. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System enhanced both on-road and off-road performance.

Safety

2023 Honda CR-V

9/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2023 Honda CR-V improved its driver assist systems with Honda Sensing, including adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. New features included a seatbelt reminder, rear-seat reminder, and traffic sign recognition. The CR-V's Advanced Compatibility Engineering body structure and new airbag designs enhanced safety. The IIHS rated it as a Top Safety Pick+.

The 2023 Lexus GX, despite its age, featured the Lexus Safety System+ with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, and adaptive cruise control. While lacking some advanced features, it offered a comprehensive suite of safety technologies.
