2023 Ford F-150 Reviews Summary

This year, Ford expands the F-150 lineup yet again. The big news is the debut of the F-150 Raptor R, equipped with a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 engine making 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque. The new 2023 F-150 Raptor R also has exclusive R-tuned Fox live-valve shocks, standard 37-inch all-terrain tires, and a few other goodies to justify its presumably six-figure price tag (Canadian pricing has not been announced as of publication time).

The other new version of the 2023 Ford F-150 is more accessible: the XLT Heritage Edition. It has two-tone paint, unique cloth seat inserts, and exclusive 75 Years interior details. That’s the subject of this review.

2024 Chevrolet Colorado Reviews Summary

Midsize trucks are having a moment. Rugged, off-road-ready lifestyle pickups and SUVs are all currently in vogue. In the past few years, we’ve seen redesigns for the Ford Ranger, the Nissan Frontier, and, long-awaited, the Toyota Tacoma. General Motors has joined the party with a redesigned GMC Canyon and Chevrolet Colorado.

The popularity of smaller trucks has ebbed and flowed through the decades, but based on all of these redesigns, automakers are convinced that there are sales to be made. One way these trucks have evolved is by pivoting from downsized work vehicles offering weekend-warrior and lifestyle-off-roader versions, to focusing specifically on those weekend warrior and lifestyle shoppers.

Verdict: The Colorado has evolved from merely offering more content and upgraded versions to focusing on well-equipped, upgraded trims catering to recreation more than work.

2023 Ford F-150

7/10

2024 Chevrolet Colorado

8/10

The 2023 Ford F-150 offered a wide array of configurations, making it a versatile choice for those in need of a full-size, light-duty pickup truck. With options ranging from regular to crew cab styles and various cargo bed lengths, the F-150 catered to diverse needs. The model lineup included eight core trims, from the basic XL to the high-performance Raptor, with prices starting at $44,055 and reaching up to $105,275. The test model, an F-150 XLT Super Crew, featured numerous optional packages and upgrades, bringing its price to $77,675. The truck's exterior, especially in the Area 51 paint colour, was appealing, and its interior focused on functionality, though some elements like the shifter and steering wheel controls felt less refined.

In contrast, the 2024 Chevrolet Colorado embraced a bold, aggressive design inspired by the Camaro, with rakish headlights and a sharply angled grille. The interior followed suit with a clean, horizontal dashboard layout and Camaro-inspired circular climate control vents. The Colorado was available in five trims: WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2, each offering varying levels of features and off-road capabilities. The base WT model came well-equipped with digital instruments and connectivity options, while higher trims added conveniences like wireless charging and advanced off-road features. The ZR2 Bison, an off-road-focused variant, included unique bodywork and protective gear, enhancing its rugged appeal.

Performance

2023 Ford F-150

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Colorado

8/10

The 2023 Ford F-150 offered a range of engine options, with the test model featuring a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 producing 400 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, the engine delivered smooth acceleration, though it lacked the traditional V8 sound. The F-150's maximum towing capacity was 6,350 kilograms, with a payload rating of 1,503 kilograms, depending on configuration. The truck's ride quality varied, feeling harsh when unloaded but improving with added weight. The brakes performed well, and the steering was adequate for most driving scenarios. Fuel efficiency fell short of expectations, averaging 13.8 L/100 km.

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado came with two turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engines. The base engine produced 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, while the Turbo Max version offered 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, providing solid low-end power. The ZR2 Bison, equipped with the upgraded powertrain, delivered strong acceleration and a maximum towing capacity of 3,492 kilograms. The Bison's off-road suspension, featuring Multimatic DSSV dampers, provided excellent shock absorption, though the ride was firmer on paved roads. The truck handled corners with stability, despite some body roll.

Form and function

2023 Ford F-150

8/10

2024 Chevrolet Colorado

7/10

The 2023 Ford F-150's interior was spacious, with comfortable seating for five and ample storage options. The test truck's High equipment package included power-adjustable front seats and pedals, making it easy to find a comfortable driving position. The cabin offered numerous storage compartments, and the rear seats could be folded for additional cargo space. The cargo bed featured a spray-in bedliner and the 2.0-kW Pro Power Onboard system, though accessing the bed was challenging without the optional tailgate step.

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado was available in a single body style, a four-door quad cab with a 1,567-millimetre bed. The interior provided a car-like seating position, offering comfort on long trips. Front-row space was generous, but second-row legroom was tight for taller passengers. The truck's layout was user-friendly, though the low cupholder placement was inconvenient. The Colorado's bed had high walls, making loading difficult, but the rear bumper steps were useful. The ZR2 Bison's spare tire, mounted in the bed, reduced usable space.
