2021 Ford F-150 Reviews Summary

The Ford F-Series pickup truck has been the best-selling vehicle in the United States for decades and in Canada for the past 11 years, so a lot is at stake with any redesign. The 2021 Ford F-150 plays it safe, with changes that are smaller in scope than the truck’s previous redesign (for the 2015 model year), but nonetheless significant.

This latest redesign brought an updated version of the previous-generation truck’s bold styling, a revamped interior with more convenience features, and the new Sync 4 infotainment system, as well as an available PowerBoost hybrid powertrain. This is the first time Ford has offered an F-150 hybrid, and the PowerBoost is currently the only full-hybrid powertrain available in a full-size pickup truck.

The F-150’s traditional rivals are the Chevrolet Silverado 1500/GMC Sierra 1500 twins and Ram 1500, along with the slower-selling Toyota Tundra and recently discontinued Nissan Titan.

Ford offers a staggering array of options, including six trim levels (XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited), three cab configurations, three bed sizes, six powertrains, and the choice of rear-wheel drive (RWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD). Our test vehicle was an F-150 King Ranch with the SuperCrew cab, 4WD, and the PowerBoost hybrid powertrain.

2022 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

In 2021, the Ram pickup line was the second-best-selling truck in Canada. That’s the headline. The nuance is that sales figures include the previous-generation version, now sold as the Ram 1500 Classic, which remains in production four years after its should have died. Nevertheless, and especially in light of the redesigned Toyota Tundra arriving in the market, we thought it would be good to revisit the most popular of the Ram trucks, the 2022 Ram 1500.

Look and feel

2021 Ford F-150

8/10

2022 RAM 1500

10/10

The 2021 Ford F-150 retained its rugged exterior styling, reminiscent of its predecessors, with oversized wheel arches and a tall hood. However, it introduced a new front fascia with larger headlights and a rounder grille, offering 11 design options. Ford emphasized improved aerodynamics with active grille shutters and an automatically-deploying air dam, aiming to enhance fuel efficiency. The aluminum bodywork, including the cab, bed, fenders, and hood, reduced weight, contributing to better fuel economy and increased payload capacity. Inside, the F-150 maintained its distinctive design with large angular air vents and a high centre console. The interior materials varied across trims, with the King Ranch model featuring luxurious leather upholstery and wood trim.

The 2022 RAM 1500 presented a clean and contemporary design, maintaining elements of the "big rig" styling. The Limited trim, in particular, exuded luxury with its Indigo and Sea Salt quilted leather upholstery, suede headliner, and premium sound system. The interior was busy with mixed materials and patterns, yet the quality was evident, with minimal visible plastic. The RAM 1500's cabin was spacious and comfortable, with heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a reclining rear seat. The truck's design was understated, with chrome accents that complemented the overall look rather than appearing excessive.

Performance

2022 RAM 1500

9/10

The 2021 Ford F-150 offered a range of powertrains, including a base 3.3-litre V6 with 290 horsepower and a 5.0-litre V8 producing 400 hp. Two twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engines were available, with the 3.5-litre unit delivering 400 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. The PowerBoost hybrid powertrain combined a 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 with an electric motor, achieving 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. The hybrid offered impressive power but had a rough transition between electric and hybrid modes. The F-150 excelled in payload and towing capacity, with the 5.0-litre V8 achieving a maximum payload of 3,325 pounds and the non-hybrid 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 towing up to 14,000 pounds.

The 2022 RAM 1500 provided several engine options, including a 3.6-litre V6 with a mild-hybrid system and a 5.7-litre Hemi V8. The EcoDiesel engine, a 3.0-litre turbocharged diesel V6, produced 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The EcoDiesel's towing capacity reached up to 12,560 pounds, with our test truck managing 9,600 pounds. The RAM 1500's fuel economy was impressive, averaging 9.5 L/100 km. The truck's coil-spring rear suspension and optional air suspension provided a smooth ride, while the interior remained quiet and comfortable. However, the brake pedal's delayed action was a minor drawback.

The 2021 Ford F-150 catered to those using their trucks as mobile offices, with features like a fold-flat shifter creating a work surface for a 15-inch laptop. The King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited trims offered fold-flat Max Recline Seats for added comfort. The F-150 provided ample storage, including a centre-console bin and large cupholders. It offered various cab configurations, with the SuperCrew providing the most rear passenger space. Bed sizes ranged from 5.5 to 8 feet, with power running boards and a fold-out tailgate step for easier access. The Pro Power Onboard system offered in-bed power outlets, with up to 7.2 kW of output available.

The 2022 RAM 1500 featured power-deploying running boards, adjustable through the Uconnect 5 system. The Limited trim offered heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a reclining rear seat. The cabin provided practical storage, with a centre console, door panel bins, and under-floor storage. The multi-function tailgate could support 2,000 pounds and offered a centre bed step for easier access. RamBox storage bins were available but not included in our test vehicle.

The 2021 Ford F-150 introduced the Sync 4 infotainment system, featuring Bluetooth, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. An 8-inch touchscreen was standard, with a 12-inch option available. The system included physical buttons for essential functions and offered Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Trailer Reverse Guidance for easier towing. However, the system's menus could be slow to load.

The 2022 RAM 1500 featured the new Uconnect 5 system, standard from the Sport trim. It offered an 8.4-inch or 12-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The system was generally responsive, though voice recognition and complexity posed challenges. The RAM 1500 also offered a head-up display, digital rearview camera mirror, and trailer-specific technology.

The 2021 Ford F-150 had not yet received full crash-test ratings, but the IIHS gave it a "good" rating for roof strength. Standard safety features included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and automatic high beams. Additional features like lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control were available. The BlueCruise system, offering hands-free driving, was expected later in 2021.

The 2022 RAM 1500 offered driver-assist features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert from the Big Horn trim. Higher trims included automatic high beams, forward-collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. The Advanced Safety Group added a head-up display and surround-view camera. The IIHS awarded the RAM 1500 a Top Safety Pick rating, while the NHTSA gave it a five-star overall rating.
