2021 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

Always the bridesmaid but never the bride, the Ram 1500 enters the fray of high-performance off-road vehicles with cocksure confidence. Second place in truck sales last year, Ram earns the first-place podium in superpowers with its new SRT Hellcat-powered TRX trim level as it looks to make moves to climb the sales charts. Or, maybe, just literally drive over its competition.

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Reviews Summary

Electric vehicles have been kicking around for some time now. From the ill-fated General Motors EV1 to the early success of the Nissan Leaf and on to the meteoric rise of Tesla, we’ve had plenty of time to get used to EVs. But there’s never before been an zero-emission electric vehicle with as much mass appeal as the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning.

2021 RAM 1500

7/10

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

8/10

The 2021 RAM 1500 maintained its robust design from the 2019 redesign, offering no new cosmetic changes. It continued to provide a variety of configurations, including quad cab or crew cab models, with options for different bed lengths and drive types. The standout for 2021 was the introduction of the TRX model, which was inspired by off-road rally races. The TRX featured a commanding presence with a functional hood scoop, massive grille, and fender vents. It was a crew cab-only 4x4 with a 5-foot, 7-inch box, and its dimensions were notably larger than the standard RAM 1500, straddling commercial vehicle territory. The TRX also boasted impressive ground clearance and the ability to ford through significant water depths. Its exterior was complemented by large all-terrain tires and distinctive badging, while the interior offered first-class comfort and technology, with options for premium materials and a 12-inch Uconnect infotainment display.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning, despite being a groundbreaking electric vehicle, retained a familiar appearance akin to other F-150 models. Available in Canada in XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trims, it featured a crew cab and a 5.5-foot bed. The Lightning was distinguishable by its LED headlight bar and a plastic façade in place of a traditional grille. Inside, it offered ample space, with more legroom than many crossovers, and high-quality materials. The Lariat trim included a panoramic sunroof and extensive power outlets, thanks to the Pro Power Onboard system. The Lightning's air conditioning and ventilated seats provided comfort, while the interior work surface feature added practicality. The truck's design and features made it suitable for both work and family use.

The 2021 RAM 1500 TRX was equipped with a 6.2-litre supercharged Hemi V8 engine, delivering 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. It had a payload capacity of 594 kg and could tow up to 3,674 kg. The TRX accelerated to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and had a top speed of 190 km/h. Its fuel consumption was notably high, with city, highway, and combined figures of 22.4, 16.5, and 19.8 litres per 100 km, respectively. The TRX excelled in various driving scenarios, offering eight drive modes, including a Baja mode. It was comfortable on-road and capable off-road, with features like a four-corner air suspension and launch control for acceleration tests.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning featured dual electric motors, providing 426 horsepower with the standard range battery and 563 horsepower with the extended range battery, along with 775 lb-ft of torque. All models had all-wheel drive. The standard-range battery offered a range of 370 km, while the extended-range battery increased it to 515 km. The Lightning was fast, with a low centre of gravity aiding stability, but its weight limited cornering ability. It used an independent rear suspension for better packaging. The standard-range battery was 98 kWh, and the extended-range was 131 kWh, with fast charging capabilities.

The cabin had plenty of storage options, and the seats were comfortable and adjustable, making long drives more pleasant.

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning prioritized functionality with a 5.5-foot bed equipped with tie-down points. Its standout feature was the Mega Power Frunk, offering 400 litres of storage with an underfloor bin. The Lightning could serve as a backup generator, powering a household for three days. It had a towing capacity of 4,535 kg and a payload capacity of 907 kg, with onboard scales to manage weight and range.
