2021 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

Always the bridesmaid but never the bride, the Ram 1500 enters the fray of high-performance off-road vehicles with cocksure confidence. Second place in truck sales last year, Ram earns the first-place podium in superpowers with its new SRT Hellcat-powered TRX trim level as it looks to make moves to climb the sales charts. Or, maybe, just literally drive over its competition.

2022 Honda Ridgeline Reviews Summary

Honda isn’t known for pickup trucks, but that means it brings a different perspective to the genre. The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is like no other pickup on the market.

The Ridgeline isn’t just being different for the sake of being different, either. It uses the same unibody construction that gives crossover SUVs greater refinement than traditional models to offer increased comfort and better on-road handling than most pickups.

Since the Ridgeline’s debut, the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick have applied the unibody concept to smaller compact pickups, creating a new niche, but the Honda is a larger vehicle that competes with existing midsize pickups like the Ford Ranger, Jeep Gladiator, Nissan Frontier, Toyota Tacoma, and Chevrolet Colorado/GMC Canyon twins.

The Ridgeline debuted for the 2006 model year and the current second-generation version dates back to the 2017 model year. It got a facelift for 2021, so it carries over to 2022 essentially unchanged. In Canada, trim levels include the base Ridgeline Sport, midlevel EX-L and Touring, and the range-topping Black Edition, which is what we sampled for this review.

2021 RAM 1500

7/10

2022 Honda Ridgeline

8/10

The 2021 RAM 1500 was a continuation of the redesign that took place in 2019, offering no new cosmetic changes. It maintained its configurations with quad cab or crew cab models, available in both rear-wheel drive (RWD) and four-wheel drive (4WD). The standout for 2021 was the introduction of the TRX model, which was inspired by off-road rally races. The TRX was a crew cab-only 4x4 with a 5-foot, 7-inch box, and it featured a commanding presence with a functioning hood scoop, massive grille, and fender vents. The TRX's dimensions were larger than the standard RAM 1500, with a height of 2,055 mm and a width of 2,235 mm, straddling the line of commercial vehicle territory. The interior of the TRX was luxurious, with standard black premium cloth and vinyl upholstery, and options for leather and suede materials. The cabin was equipped with a 12-inch Uconnect infotainment display, offering a blend of comfort and technology.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline, built on a unibody platform, offered a more car-like construction compared to traditional body-on-frame trucks. Its styling was conservative, with a snub nose and a classic pickup rear view. The Ridgeline's front-end styling was updated in 2021 to be blockier and more upright, aligning it more with traditional trucks. The Black Edition test vehicle featured Berlina Black paint and matching alloy wheels. Inside, the Ridgeline had a basic design with high-quality fit and finish, featuring leather upholstery, heated seats, and a moonroof. However, the piano black trim was prone to smudges and scratches. The Ridgeline's interior was practical, with a focus on comfort and functionality.

2022 Honda Ridgeline

7/10

The 2021 RAM 1500 TRX was equipped with a 6.2-litre supercharged Hemi V8 engine, delivering 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. It had a payload capacity of 594 kg and a towing capability of 3,674 kg. The TRX could accelerate to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds and had a top speed of 190 km/h. Fuel consumption was rated at 22.4 litres per 100 km in the city and 16.5 on the highway. The TRX offered eight drive modes, including a Baja mode, and featured a four-corner air suspension for a comfortable ride. Off-road, the TRX excelled with its capability and performance, handling various terrains with ease.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline featured a 3.5-litre V6 engine with 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. It had a towing capacity of 2,267 kg and a payload capacity of up to 690 kg. While its towing capacity was lower than some competitors, the Ridgeline offered a smooth ride and handling, thanks to its unibody platform and independent suspension. The Ridgeline's off-road capability was limited compared to traditional 4WD systems, but it still managed moderate off-road conditions.

Form and function

2022 Honda Ridgeline

9/10

The 2021 RAM 1500 TRX offered functional features like full-length rock rails and a full-size spare tire. Despite its larger exterior, the interior dimensions were the same as the standard RAM 1500, with ample headroom and legroom. The cabin had plenty of storage options, and the seats were comfortable with adjustable pedals for driver comfort. The TRX's interior was designed for long drives, with a focus on preventing driver fatigue.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline was available only with a four-door crew cab and a 162.5 cm bed, offering a balance of passenger and cargo space. The bed included a 207-litre lockable in-bed trunk with a drain plug, a spare tire slot, and an in-bed audio system. The Dual-Action Tailgate and wide bed allowed for versatile cargo options. Inside, the Ridgeline had additional storage under the rear seats and a practical layout with easy-to-use controls.

The 2021 RAM 1500 featured a 12-inch Uconnect 4C infotainment system with navigation, customizable displays, and Performance Pages for vehicle data. It offered wireless charging, smartphone integration, and a premium audio system. The new head-up display provided real-time driving information, although speed limit notifications were GPS-based and sometimes inaccurate.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline came with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity and Bluetooth. While the interface was not cutting-edge, it was user-friendly with analog controls for essential functions. The Ridgeline's infotainment system was basic but functional, similar to its competitors.

Safety

The 2021 RAM 1500 TRX offered over 100 safety and security features, including forward collision warning and optional advanced driver-assistance systems. The Advanced Safety Group package included a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist. Passive safety features included an auto-reverse function for windows and an enhanced accident response system.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline received top safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, with standard Honda Sensing driver aids like automatic emergency braking and lane keep assist. It also featured automatic high beams and blind spot monitoring. However, it lacked a 360-degree camera system, which would have been beneficial for a vehicle of its size.
