2022 RAM 1500 Reviews Summary

In 2021, the Ram pickup line was the second-best-selling truck in Canada. That’s the headline. The nuance is that sales figures include the previous-generation version, now sold as the Ram 1500 Classic, which remains in production four years after its should have died. Nevertheless, and especially in light of the redesigned Toyota Tundra arriving in the market, we thought it would be good to revisit the most popular of the Ram trucks, the 2022 Ram 1500.

2023 GMC Canyon Reviews Summary

2023 marks the third generation of GMC's midsize pickup truck. The first-generation Canyon arrived for the 2004 model year as a replacement for the compact GMC Sonoma, and after a short hiatus a second-generation Canyon was introduced as a 2015 model. Throughout, the Canyon has been a twin of the Chevrolet Colorado, with only a few differences to distinguish the ostensibly upscale GMC from its working-class sibling. That changes for 2023.

The new Canyon is once again based on the Colorado, sharing the Chevy's body-on-frame platform, powertrain, and tech features. This time around, though, the Canyon is further distinguished from the Colorado by skipping some of the Chevy's entry-level features. That will raise the out-the-door price of a 2023 Canyon, but it's in keeping with the truck's positioning above the Colorado.

The Canyon is once again available in the base Elevation, luxury Denali, and off-road-oriented AT4 grades familiar to owners of the outgoing model. For 2023, GMC also adds a Canyon AT4X model that dials up the off-road capability. We drove it, as well as the Elevation and AT4 models, to see if this redesign is really an improvement.

2022 RAM 1500

10/10

2023 GMC Canyon

8/10

The 2022 RAM 1500 was available in both Quad Cab and Crew Cab styles, offering a standard 6-foot, 4-inch cargo box, with a 5-foot, 7-inch box option for Crew Cab models. Canadian buyers could choose from eight trim levels, ranging from the basic Tradesman to the high-performance TRX. The model year introduced the next-generation Uconnect 5 infotainment system, available on lower trims and standard on higher ones, featuring an 8.4-inch or 12-inch touchscreen display. The new Trailer Hitch Light feature, part of the Trailer Tow Group, improved visibility after dark. The Limited trim test truck came with a turbodiesel engine, 4WD, and a host of luxury features, including a Limited 10th Anniversary Edition package with premium leather upholstery and a 19-speaker sound system. The truck's design was clean and contemporary, with a luxurious interior that exuded quality, thanks to its high-end materials and construction.

The 2023 GMC Canyon, on the other hand, presented a more aggressive and muscular appearance, with a broad grille and bulging body sides. Sharing dimensions with the redesigned Chevy Colorado, the Canyon featured a longer wheelbase and an "Ultra Wide Track" stance. The model offered a standard factory lift kit, with the AT4X model boasting a 7.6 cm lift for enhanced ground clearance. The Denali trim stood out with its chrome accents and 20-inch wheels, while the interior featured laser-etched wood trim and leather upholstery. The Canyon's cabin provided ample space, with first-row legroom surpassing most midsize models. The new MultiStow tailgate added a waterproof storage compartment, although the lack of a telescoping steering wheel and power-adjustable front seats was notable for a premium brand.

Performance

2022 RAM 1500

9/10

2023 GMC Canyon

9/10

The 2022 RAM 1500 offered a range of engines, including a standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with a mild-hybrid system, a 5.7-litre Hemi V8, and a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 for the TRX model. The test truck featured the EcoDiesel engine, a turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel V6 producing 260 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine allowed for a towing capacity of up to 5,697 kilograms, with the test truck managing 4,354 kilograms. Fuel consumption was estimated at 9.7 litres per 100 kilometres, with the test achieving 9.5 L/100 km. The RAM 1500's coil-spring rear suspension and optional air suspension provided a smooth ride, while the quiet cabin and premium sound system enhanced the driving experience. However, the brake pedal's delayed action was a minor drawback.

The 2023 GMC Canyon came with a single powertrain option: a 2.7-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. In Canada, all models featured 4WD, with the AT4X model offering advanced off-road features like electronic lockers and Multimatic DSSV dampers. The Canyon balanced on-road comfort with off-road capability, with the AT4X excelling in challenging terrains. While the steering was typical for a pickup, the engine and transmission provided adequate acceleration. The Canyon's towing capacity reached 3,492 kilograms for most trims, with the AT4X rated at 2,721 kilograms. The payload capacity was 716 kilograms, slightly lower than some rivals.

Form and function

2023 GMC Canyon

8/10

The 2022 RAM 1500's interior was designed for comfort and practicality. The Limited trim featured heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and ample space, with a reclining back seat for added comfort. Storage solutions included a versatile centre console, door panel bins, and under-floor Ram Bins. The multi-function tailgate offered flexibility, supporting up to 900 kilograms and providing easier access to the bed. The test vehicle lacked RamBox storage bins, but the overall design emphasized convenience and luxury.

The 2023 GMC Canyon was available only as a crew cab with a 5.2-foot bed, offering competitive interior space for a midsize truck. The Canyon excelled in first-row legroom, with second-row legroom surpassed only by a few SUV-based models. The new MultiStow tailgate added a unique storage solution, although its utility was limited. The Canyon's towing and payload capacities were respectable, though not class-leading. The absence of a telescoping steering wheel and power-adjustable seats was a notable omission for a premium brand.

The 2022 RAM 1500 featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, with an 8.4-inch or 12-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The system offered connected services, navigation, and a wireless charging dock, though the latter's performance was inconsistent. The voice recognition system required specific language, and the system's complexity could be challenging. Additional tech options included a head-up display, digital rearview camera mirror, and trailer-specific features.

The 2023 GMC Canyon's infotainment system included an 11.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a digital instrument cluster, and a head-up display on higher trims. The system featured Google Built-In functionality, with Google Maps as the default navigation. The Off-Road Performance Display provided detailed off-road metrics, while the surround-view camera system offered enhanced visibility for off-roading. The Canyon's tech offerings catered to tech-savvy buyers, with a focus on connectivity and user-friendly interfaces.

2023 GMC Canyon

6/10

The 2022 RAM 1500 offered a range of driver-assist features, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The Advanced Safety Group added features like automatic emergency braking and a surround-view camera. The test truck's rear automatic braking system was overly sensitive, and the LaneSense system was occasionally intrusive. The RAM 1500 received a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA, though frontal-impact ratings suggested room for improvement.

The 2023 GMC Canyon's standard safety features included automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and forward collision warning. The optional Safety Plus Package added rear cross-traffic alert and blind-zone steering assist, while the Technology Package offered adaptive cruise control and a surround-view camera. These features were standard on higher trims, along with a Safety Alert Seat. Crash-test ratings were not available at the time of publication, but the Canyon's safety offerings aligned with modern standards.
