Reviews SummaryThe Trax is the cheapest new car Chevrolet sells in Canada. It takes the place of compact sedans and hatchbacks in the Bowtie brand’s lineup while competing with entry-level crossover SUVs such as the Hyundai Venue and the Nissan Kicks Play. The current Trax was introduced for the 2024 model year, and for 2026 the only changes are two new exterior colour options. White Sands is available with Activ and RS models, while Apex Red is available with RS and LT models. Verdict: Blending elements of compact cars and crossover SUVs, the Trax hits a sweet spot of utility and affordability. It’s also pleasant to drive and offers impressive infotainment tech, but a lack of solid safety ratings and all-wheel drive are the trade-offs.
Reviews SummaryAutomakers have traditionally had a hard time making money on entry-level subcompact cars because they have low profit margins. But North America has largely moved away from cars to crossover SUVs — and higher prices. That allows car companies to offer an entry-level subcompact SUV for thousands more than a similar sedan or hatchback. Such is the case with the Hyundai Venue, which costs more than its predecessor, the subcompact Accent that was dropped in Canada after the 2020 model year. While the price is higher, the advantage for buyers is a vehicle that generally has more cargo space and is more practical. We recently drove the 2026 Hyundai Venue to find out if a subcompact crossover is a better buy than a cheaper subcompact car. Verdict: The Hyundai Venue sacrifices refinement for a price point that isn’t as low as a comparable subcompact car. We’d be tempted to spend a little more for a slightly larger compact car with more power, features, and refinement.

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax emerged as a more appealing option for those who missed the car-like proportions of the discontinued Cruze and Sonic. It shared its design with the Buick Envista, offering a blend of car and SUV styling elements. The Trax featured Blazer-like headlights, a wide grille, and a tall front end, giving it a distinctive personality. Its chunky wheel arches and sleek side profile added to its appeal, while the wide stance and imposing grille provided a touch of SUV toughness. In Canada, the Trax lineup included the 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ trims, each with unique features like black-painted wheels and model-specific badges. Inside, the Trax's design details stood out, with large air vents and contrasting trim enhancing the overall look. While the materials felt economical, the layout of the instrument cluster and touchscreen was reminiscent of a Corvette, adding a touch of sophistication.
The 2026 Hyundai Venue, classified as a crossover SUV, leaned more towards a tall hatchback design. It offered front-wheel drive and a modest 17 centimetres of ground clearance. The Venue's design was compact and narrow, resembling a European runabout. Its upright windshield and SUV cues, such as the bluff nose and roof rails, contributed to its crossover appearance. The Venue featured lower headlights, high-set daytime running lights, and a satin metallic lower fascia. Black wheel flares and a two-tone roof added flair to its profile. Inside, the Venue's design was simple and functional, with a digital instrument cluster and a small touchscreen. Body-colour trim elements brought a touch of the exterior design inside the vehicle.

The 2026 Chevrolet Trax was equipped with a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder engine, producing 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. This engine, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, offered a spirited driving experience. The Trax's turbocharged engine provided more power than the Hyundai Venue's naturally aspirated 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, which delivered 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. The Trax's engine felt confident and responsive, with minimal turbo lag, making it enjoyable to drive. The conventional automatic transmission contributed to its drivability, offering smoother shifts compared to a CVT. While performance wasn't the Trax's primary focus, it handled twisty roads with poise, though it exhibited some body roll and limited grip. The suspension provided a comfortable ride, and active noise cancellation enhanced refinement.
In contrast, the Hyundai Venue's performance was modest, with its 1.6-litre engine delivering 121 horsepower and 113 pound-feet of torque. The Venue's CVT transmitted power to the front wheels, resulting in a 0-100 km/h time of 8.5–8.8 seconds. While the Venue felt peppy in city traffic, it struggled at highway speeds, with the transmission slow to downshift for more power. The Venue's lightweight design contributed to its agility, making it easy to manoeuvre in traffic and park in tight spaces. However, the engine's drone and limited sound deadening detracted from the overall experience. The Venue's handling benefited from its small size, but its solid rear axle made the ride jiggly on rough roads.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax offered competitive interior space, with headroom comparable to the Hyundai Kona and Subaru Crosstrek. It provided more rear-seat legroom than the Hyundai Venue and Nissan Kicks Play, making it a practical choice for passengers. The Trax boasted 725 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, comparable to a Honda Civic hatchback. With the rear seats folded, it offered 1,532 litres of cargo space, making it versatile for various needs. The Trax's tall seating position facilitated easy ingress and egress, and its forward visibility was impressive. While the rear view was less clear, large exterior mirrors compensated for it. The interior featured large door pockets and cup holders, though the wireless device charger struggled to hold phones securely. Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated side mirrors were standard on the base 1RS model.
The Hyundai Venue's interior featured cloth and synthetic leather seats with black upholstery and white contrast stitching. The seats were comfortable, with six-way manual adjustments for the driver. While headroom was ample, legroom was limited for taller occupants. The rear seat accommodated average-sized adults, but taller passengers might find it cramped. The rear seats folded flat in a 60/40 split, providing 528 litres of cargo space. With the rear seats up, the Venue offered 902 litres of cargo capacity. The Venue's rear cargo floor lifted to access the compact spare tire, revealing cost-cutting measures like the lack of sound deadening. The interior featured hard black plastic surfaces, with soft-touch materials limited to the centre console and door armrests.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax came equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, and a four-speaker audio system as standard on the 1RS base model. Higher trim levels featured an 11-inch touchscreen, an all-digital 8-inch instrument cluster, and a six-speaker sound system. The digital cluster displayed essential information, while the touchscreen had a user-friendly layout. The Trax included USB ports for connectivity and charging, though the volume knob was awkwardly placed for the driver. The touchscreen's driver-oriented angle made it less accessible for the front passenger, affecting overall usability.
The Hyundai Venue featured a simple 8-inch touchscreen for basic infotainment functions. While it lacked features like navigation and a Wi-Fi hotspot, it offered wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The digital instrument cluster displayed limited information and was not programmable. A wireless charging pad was standard in Canada, adding a premium touch. The Venue's audio system consisted of six speakers, with no premium option available. While the system sufficed for basic audio needs, it lacked the clarity of higher-end systems.
The 2026 Chevrolet Trax offered a comprehensive suite of standard driver-assist features, including automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and blind spot monitoring. Adaptive cruise control was available on higher trims. Chevy's Teen Driver monitoring system provided additional safety features for young drivers. However, the Trax received a "Poor" rating in the IIHS's updated moderate overlap front crash test, raising concerns about its safety performance. The Trax did achieve a "Good" rating in the small overlap front test, but full safety ratings were not available at the time of writing.
The Hyundai Venue came with standard safety features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist. Blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were available on higher trims. The Venue's safety systems performed well during testing, though the driver attention monitor was overly sensitive. The Venue received a four-star safety rating from the NHTSA, while the IIHS had not released full ratings. The Venue achieved a "Good" score in the small front overlap test, but other ratings were unavailable.
