2024 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

The Toyota Sequoia gained a standard hybrid powertrain when it entered its third generation, just last year. While the tech updates were widely celebrated and the facelift considered unobjectionable even by its harshest critics, the move to hybrid power proved to be something of a mixed bag. Increased towing and hauling power bolstered the obvious advantage of improved fuel economy, but impact was somewhat dampened by the reduction in cargo and third-row space to accommodate the new battery.

Verdict: The Sequoia may not be the most capable full-size SUV in the segment, and it’s certainly not the most spacious. It is, however, the only hybrid in its class, and it offers a blend of seating capacity, towing power, and fuel efficiency you won’t find elsewhere—at least, not if you don’t want to go diesel.

2025 Hyundai Santa Fe Reviews Summary

More than twenty years ago, Hyundai gave us its first SUV. Called the Santa Fe, the popular crossover has gone through four generations, all leading up to the design departure that makes this latest model the boldest-looking version yet.

Even if you’re not sold on the exterior design, the 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe has plenty to recommend it. Its longer wheelbase means the mid-size crossover has more interior space, and Hyundai has added myriad features that just make sense in a family vehicle of this size. Some rivals might offer more cargo space, but those who are looking for stand-out styling on the road should take a serious look at this blocky crossover.

Verdict: The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size crossover that fashionable families will love. Though, those with more traditional tastes might find it all a bit too much.

2024 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

2025 Hyundai Santa Fe

7/10

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia shared its platform with the Tundra pickup, and this was evident in its design cues, such as hexagonal grilles, wheel arches, and strong fender creases. The exterior colour significantly influenced its appearance, with the Capstone model featuring more chrome brightwork. Our tester, in Celestial Silver, appeared somewhat dated, reminiscent of a "cop car." Inside, the Sequoia closely resembled the Tundra and other Toyota vehicles, with a blocky, geometric dash layout and physical controls for volume and climate. The Capstone trim boasted semi-aniline leather upholstery, while other trims offered SofTex leatherette or leather. All models featured power-adjustable front seats and a power-tilt and -slide moonroof, with a panoramic version available on higher trims.

The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe, available in three trims in Canada, maintained its fifth-generation design with no revisions. It featured a chunky, boxy look with a long wheelbase and H-shaped LED headlamps. The rear design, however, suffered from mismatched proportions, with taillights positioned too low. Each trim had specific wheels, ranging from 18 to 21 inches. Inside, the Santa Fe offered seating for seven, except for the Ultimate Calligraphy trim, which had captain's chairs. The interior fit and finish were generally good, though some squeaks and rattles were noted. The HVAC controls included physical dials, but fan speed buttons were less intuitive.

Performance

2024 Toyota Sequoia

2025 Hyundai Santa Fe

8/10

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia was exclusively available as a hybrid, utilizing Toyota's iForce MAX hybrid powertrain. This combined a twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor, producing 427 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, surpassing its V8 predecessor. Fuel economy improved significantly, with a combined rating of 11.7 L/100 km for 4WD models. The Sequoia featured standard 4WD with a part-time system and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The TRD Off-Road model offered adventure-readiness with unique tires, off-road suspension, and driver-assist features. Its maximum towing capacity was 4,137 kilograms, with towing-related upgrades available.

The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe came with a standard 2.5-litre turbocharged engine, delivering 277 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. AWD was standard across the lineup, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The Santa Fe Hybrid, a separate model, combined a 1.6-litre engine with an electric motor, producing 231 hp and 271 lb-ft of torque. The Santa Fe exhibited stable handling, though turbo lag and occasional transmission delays were noted. The gear selector, located on a stalk, required some adjustment. The XRT trim featured 30-inch all-terrain tires and increased ground clearance, enhancing off-road capabilities.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia Capstone featured automatic power-deploying running boards, aiding entry for shorter individuals. Cargo space was generous, with a maximum of 2,460 litres when both second- and third-row seats were folded. The third-row seats, positioned above the hybrid powertrain's battery pack, did not create a flat load floor when folded. Headroom was slightly reduced, and legroom varied across rows. Second-row captain's chairs were available on higher trims, though they lacked bolstering.

The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe XRT offered heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a sunroof. The Ultimate Calligraphy trim added heated second-row seats and a premium audio system. The Santa Fe excelled in third-row legroom, and both second and third rows could be folded for increased cargo space. The rear opening was widened, facilitating the loading of large items. Towing capacity varied by trim, with the XRT capable of towing up to 2,040 kilograms.

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia Capstone was equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, accessible through an 8-inch or 14-inch touchscreen, depending on the trim. The infotainment system prioritized functionality over flashiness. A 12.3-inch driver information display was standard across all trims. The Panoramic View monitor and a 10-inch head-up display were available on higher trims, enhancing visibility and convenience.

The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe featured a 12.3-inch touchscreen for infotainment and a digital gauge cluster. Navigation was included in higher trims, but wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard. Charging options included USB-C ports and a wireless charging pad. The digital key feature allowed smartphone or Apple Watch access. The Ultimate Calligraphy trim offered a digital rearview mirror and a head-up display. Bluelink app connectivity provided remote access and monitoring features.

Front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert were also standard. A trailer backup guide was optional on higher trims. The Sequoia had not been rated by safety organizations, but the similar Tundra received a Top Safety Pick+ designation.

The 2025 Hyundai Santa Fe offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, and forward collision avoidance assist. Highway Drive Assist was available on higher trims, though its performance varied. The top trim included a blind spot avoidance feature and Blind View Monitor. The Santa Fe received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a "Good" rating from the IIHS, with some exceptions.
