2024 Toyota Sequoia Reviews Summary

The Toyota Sequoia gained a standard hybrid powertrain when it entered its third generation, just last year. While the tech updates were widely celebrated and the facelift considered unobjectionable even by its harshest critics, the move to hybrid power proved to be something of a mixed bag. Increased towing and hauling power bolstered the obvious advantage of improved fuel economy, but impact was somewhat dampened by the reduction in cargo and third-row space to accommodate the new battery.

Verdict: The Sequoia may not be the most capable full-size SUV in the segment, and it’s certainly not the most spacious. It is, however, the only hybrid in its class, and it offers a blend of seating capacity, towing power, and fuel efficiency you won’t find elsewhere—at least, not if you don’t want to go diesel.

2025 Dodge Durango Reviews Summary

In production since 2011, the Durango exits stage left following the 2025 model year. For its final run down the Detroit assembly line, Dodge cuts the lineup in half, dropping the SXT, Citadel, and SRT 392 versions while retaining the GT, R/T, and SRT Hellcat. Dodge will sell the Durango in a series of special edition models, including an R/T 20th Anniversary Edition and three “Last Call” Hellcats: Silver Bullet, Hammerhead, and Brass Monkey.

Verdict: Though the Durango is now 15 years old, it has aged remarkably well and remains a likable if flawed midsize three-row SUV. However, time waits for no vehicle, and the Dodge Durango has reached the end of its road. For now.

Look and feel

2024 Toyota Sequoia

7/10

2025 Dodge Durango

7/10

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia shared its platform with the Tundra pickup, and this was evident in its design cues, such as hexagonal grilles, wheel arches, and strong fender creases. The exterior colour significantly influenced its appearance, with the Capstone model featuring more chrome brightwork. Our tester, in Celestial Silver, appeared somewhat dated, reminiscent of a "cop car." Inside, the Sequoia closely resembled the Tundra and other Toyota vehicles, with a blocky, geometric dash layout and physical controls for volume and climate. The Capstone trim boasted semi-aniline leather upholstery, while other trims offered SofTex leatherette or standard leather. Power-adjustable front seats and a power-tilt and -slide moonroof were standard across the lineup, enhancing customization and comfort.

The 2025 Dodge Durango, particularly the SRT Hellcat with the Silver Bullet special edition package, exuded a more aggressive visual attitude. The satin black hood, unique wheels, dark badges, and black exhaust tips added to its expressive look. Inside, the SRT Hellcat maintained a subdued yet premium feel with dark red Nappa leather seats and a suede headliner. The cabin was well-constructed, though some plastic surfaces detracted from the overall luxury. The Durango's interior was designed for comfort, with heated and ventilated front seats and a leather-and-suede-wrapped steering wheel. The second-row captain's chairs offered good leg support, and the third-row seat provided ample room for adults, making the Durango a practical choice for families.

Performance

2024 Toyota Sequoia

8/10

2025 Dodge Durango

8/10

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia was exclusively available in a hybrid format, utilizing Toyota's iForce MAX hybrid powertrain. This system combined a twin-turbo V6 engine with an electric motor, delivering 427 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. This marked a significant increase over its V8 predecessor, with improved fuel economy rated at 11.7 L/100 km combined with 4WD. The Sequoia featured a standard 4WD system with a 10-speed automatic transmission, offering smooth and subtle operation. The SR5 TRD Off-Road model catered to adventure enthusiasts with unique tires, off-road suspension, and driver-assist features like Crawl Control and hill-descent control. The Sequoia's maximum towing capacity was 4,137 kilograms, with towing-related upgrades available.

The 2025 Dodge Durango offered a simplified lineup with various powertrain options. The SRT Hellcat stood out with its 710-horsepower supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine, producing 645 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated to 96 km/h in 3.5 seconds, reached a top speed of 290 km/h, and towed up to 3,945 kilograms. Despite its power, the Durango's fuel economy was poor, with ratings of 20.5 L/100 km in the city and 17.4 combined. The SRT Hellcat featured a full-time AWD system, adaptive damping suspension, and Brembo brakes, providing a track-ready experience. Its performance was comparable to sport and performance-tuned German SUVs, with outstanding grip and braking capabilities.

Form and function

2024 Toyota Sequoia

5/10

2025 Dodge Durango

9/10

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia offered a maximum cargo space of 2,460 litres with both second- and third-row seats folded. Behind the second row, it provided 1,387 litres, and behind the third row, it ranged from 325 to 631 litres. The second-row seats were easy to move for access to the back row, and the third-row seats folded at the push of a button. However, the seats' positioning above the hybrid powertrain's battery pack affected headroom and legroom, making it less comfortable for taller passengers. The Sequoia's interior featured second-row captain's chairs in higher trims, though they lacked bolstering for support.

The 2025 Dodge Durango excelled in form and function, offering a roomy and comfortable interior. The SRT Hellcat featured heated and ventilated front seats with Nappa leather, though they didn't securely hold occupants during spirited driving. The second-row captain's chairs provided good leg support, and the third-row seat offered ample room for adults. The Durango's cargo space measured 487 litres behind the third row, expanding to 1,226 litres with the third-row seats folded. Maximum cargo volume reached 2,409 litres. The power liftgate and thoughtful storage solutions added to its practicality.

Technology

2024 Toyota Sequoia

2025 Dodge Durango

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia came equipped with a range of technology features, including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The SR5 trim featured an 8-inch touchscreen, while higher trims boasted a 14-inch centre touchscreen. The Toyota Audio Multimedia infotainment system prioritized functionality over flashiness. A full-colour 12.3-inch driver information display was standard across all trims. The Panoramic View monitor and a 10-inch colour head-up display were available on higher trims, enhancing convenience and safety. The JBL Premium Audio system was standard on Platinum and Capstone trims.

The 2025 Dodge Durango featured the Uconnect 5 infotainment system with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a native navigation system. The system included SiriusXM 360L satellite radio, Dodge Connect, and SiriusXM Guardian services. The SRT Hellcat came with a 19-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, providing excellent sound quality. The Uconnect system supported dual-phone Bluetooth pairing and wireless smartphone charging. The SRT Hellcat also included SRT Performance Pages, allowing drivers to track performance metrics.

Safety

2024 Toyota Sequoia

10/10

2025 Dodge Durango

4/10

The 2024 Toyota Sequoia offered a comprehensive suite of safety features as standard, including Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) 2.5. This included a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, lane-departure alert with steering assist, adaptive cruise control, and road-sign recognition. Front and rear parking sensors with automatic braking and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert were also standard. The only optional driver aid was a trailer backup guide with Straight-Path Assist. The Sequoia had not been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA, but the similar Toyota Tundra earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation.

The 2025 Dodge Durango's safety features were less impressive, with a short list of standard features, including forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane-keep assist. The adaptive cruise control was noted for reducing speed too much in curves. The Durango received a four-star overall rating from the NHTSA, with a three-star rollover resistance rating. The IIHS's small overlap frontal-impact test raised concerns about the Durango's safety performance.
