2022 Nissan Rogue Reviews Summary

The 2022 Nissan Rogue is a two-row crossover compact SUV with frameless, unibody construction, riding on a platform that was all-new for 2021 and shared with the next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. It comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD) and in five trim levels. In Canada, FWD prices start at $29,148 before the $1,860 destination fees and AWD at $31,448, equating to a $650 increase for both models compared to the 2021 model year. All-wheel drive costs $2,300 on lower trim levels and is standard on higher trims. And those prices include a new, more powerful engine and a new transmission. At a fuel consumption as low as 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres combined, the 2022 Rogue is the current leader in its non-hybrid compact crossover SUV class.

2023 Subaru Outback Reviews Summary

People love crossover SUVs because they drive like cars but provide the utility of an SUV, and the Subaru Outback was one of the first modern crossovers when it went on sale almost 30 years ago.

Now, the 2023 Subaru Outback gets several updates. The improvements include fresh styling, new infotainment and safety technologies, and the Onyx Edition joins the Canadian line-up, which features blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.

These changes to the 2023 Outback build on the momentum established by the rugged Subaru Outback Wilderness, which debuted last year.

2022 Nissan Rogue

7/10

2023 Subaru Outback

7/10

The 2022 Nissan Rogue continued to build on its established reputation as a top seller in the compact crossover segment. With its mature and sophisticated design, the Rogue showcased a V-motion grille, multi-level LED headlights, and a sleek floating roof. The interior was equally impressive, featuring a layered dash with contrasting colours and surfaces, an electronic gear selector lever, and a spacious centre console. The Zero Gravity bucket-style front seats provided comfort, while the roomy second row offered ample legroom. The fit and finish were exemplary, especially in the Platinum model, making the Rogue a well-rounded choice for those seeking style and comfort.

In contrast, the 2023 Subaru Outback received a facelift that gave it a more aggressive appearance. The redesigned front end featured new LED headlights, a restyled grille, and a revised bumper with dark gray cladding. The Onyx Edition, with its black wheels and trim, complemented the bold design. Inside, the Outback Limited trim offered a luxurious experience with premium Nappa leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and power-adjustable seats. The interior was upscale and cohesive, with thoughtful details like light gray contrast stitching. However, the large infotainment screen and gloss black trim were prone to collecting dust and smudges, which could be a minor annoyance for some.

Performance

2022 Nissan Rogue

8/10

2023 Subaru Outback

6/10

The 2022 Nissan Rogue's performance was significantly enhanced by its new 1.5-litre VC-Turbo engine, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This represented an 11% increase in horsepower and a 24% increase in torque compared to the previous model. The engine's variable compression technology allowed for improved fuel efficiency, with estimates of 7.8 L/100 km city and 6.5 L/100 km highway. The new CVT transmission provided a wider range of gear ratios, resulting in better acceleration and responsiveness. The Rogue's chassis and suspension delivered a smooth and controlled ride, with minimal body roll and a tight turning diameter of 10.8 metres.

The 2023 Subaru Outback, on the other hand, offered a choice between a standard 2.5-litre engine and a more powerful 2.4-litre turbocharged engine in the XT models. The standard engine produced 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque, but it struggled with passing and climbing power. The turbocharged engine, available in the XT models, delivered 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, providing a more satisfying driving experience. The Outback's fuel efficiency varied, with the standard engine rated at 8.3 L/100 km combined, while the XT models were less efficient. The Outback's suspension tuning was spot-on, offering a firm ride at lower speeds and excellent ride quality at higher speeds. The Active Torque Split AWD system and X-Mode traction system enhanced the Outback's off-road capabilities, making it a versatile choice for adventure seekers.

Form and function

2023 Subaru Outback

The 2022 Nissan Rogue excelled in providing practical storage solutions, with numerous compartments and outlets for passengers' convenience. The front cabin featured bottle holders, cupholders, a glove compartment, and a centre console bin, while rear-seat passengers had access to storage options in the doors and seatbacks. The Rogue's cargo area offered 1,033 litres of space, expandable to 2,098 litres with the second row folded flat, making it ideal for families and commuters.

The 2023 Subaru Outback prioritized utility with its purposeful roof rack, flat door sill trim, and practical accessories. The Limited trim offered a comfortable experience with power-adjustable seats, premium Nappa leather upholstery, and heated seats. The Outback's cargo space measured 923 litres behind the back seat and 2,141 litres with the back seat folded down, accommodating full-size suitcases and bulkier items. The roof rails and rack were robust, ready for tying down items and accepting accessory racks and carriers. However, the Outback could benefit from more practical storage space in the cabin.

Technology

2023 Subaru Outback

6/10

The 2022 Nissan Rogue featured a technology upgrade with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 9-inch centre infotainment touchscreen, and a 10.8-inch head-up display. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto were standard, with wireless Apple CarPlay available on upper trims. ProPilot Assist, Nissan's hands-on driver-assist technology, was available, offering features like adaptive cruise control and steering assist. The Intelligent Key system allowed for convenient keyless entry, enhancing the Rogue's family-friendly appeal.

The 2023 Subaru Outback came equipped with a Starlink 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The system included physical controls for volume, tuning, and climate control, while other functions were embedded in the touchscreen. The Outback's voice recognition system was less impressive, struggling with basic commands. Additional technologies included a camera-based digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree front-view camera, enhancing visibility and convenience.

Safety

2022 Nissan Rogue

8/10

2023 Subaru Outback

9/10

The 2022 Nissan Rogue featured the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite, including automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane-departure warning. ProPilot Assist offered advanced driver-assist features, enhancing safety in traffic and on the open road. The Rogue received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

The 2023 Subaru Outback boasted an array of safety features, including the EyeSight system with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-keeping assist. The Outback Premier XT added a Wide-Angle Mono Camera for improved pedestrian and cyclist detection. The Outback earned top marks from the IIHS, including in the new side-impact crash test. However, the adaptive cruise control and lane-centring assist systems could feel artificial, and the rear automatic braking system was incompatible with some driveways.
