2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews SummaryGiven the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action. Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review). Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe. To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.
2022 Nissan Rogue Reviews SummaryThe 2022 Nissan Rogue is a two-row crossover compact SUV with frameless, unibody construction, riding on a platform that was all-new for 2021 and shared with the next-generation Mitsubishi Outlander. It comes with front-wheel drive (FWD) or available all-wheel drive (AWD) and in five trim levels. In Canada, FWD prices start at $29,148 before the $1,860 destination fees and AWD at $31,448, equating to a $650 increase for both models compared to the 2021 model year. All-wheel drive costs $2,300 on lower trim levels and is standard on higher trims. And those prices include a new, more powerful engine and a new transmission. At a fuel consumption as low as 7.2 litres per 100 kilometres combined, the 2022 Rogue is the current leader in its non-hybrid compact crossover SUV class.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, resulting in a similar traditional SUV styling. It featured a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile reminiscent of the smaller 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly, with laser-etched knurling in the slots, and the wheel centre caps had an acrylic glass covering to protect the “Wagoneer” logo. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent front and rear suspension, with an aluminum hood and doors, and a composite tailgate to save weight.
Inside, the Grand Wagoneer shared styling features with the Wagoneer, such as an integrated infotainment touchscreen, a large rotary shift knob, and a two-spoke steering wheel. However, it offered more convenience features and higher-quality materials, including 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, lumbar support, and four-way power headrests. Standard heated first- and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, and optional ventilated second-row seats added to the luxury. Nappa leather upholstery was standard, with higher-grade Palermo leather available, along with aluminum and American Walnut wood trim. Subtle differences like Mercedes-style seat controls and the “Grand Wagoneer” inscription on the dashboard further set it apart.
The 2022 Nissan Rogue, having undergone a redesign in 2021, continued to showcase a more mature look in 2022. It featured exterior design elements common to other current-generation Nissan vehicles, such as the V-motion grille, multi-level LED headlights, and LED fog lamps on higher trims. Active grille shutters, underbody covers, and an “air curtain” improved airflow, while the floating roof illusion and slightly bulging liftgate added to its sleek appearance. Inside, the Rogue boasted a layered dash with distinct horizontal layers, offering a sophisticated and detailed look. The centre console, with its electronic gear selector lever, provided ample space for storage, including a wireless charging pad and a large storage cubby.
The Rogue's interior was designed for comfort and practicality, with Nissan’s Zero Gravity bucket-style front seats and a roomy second row offering good legroom. The fit and finish were exemplary, especially on the top-of-the-line Platinum model. The Rogue's performance was enhanced by a new 1.5-litre VC-Turbo engine, producing 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque, offering a lively driving experience. The new engine also boasted impressive fuel efficiency, with estimates of 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres city/6.5 highway/7.2 combined. The Rogue's chassis and suspension delivered a smooth, controlled ride, with good steering feel and a tight turning diameter.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine featured cylinder deactivation for improved fuel efficiency and was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Wagoneer could accelerate from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in approximately six seconds, despite its hefty weight of around 2,900 kilograms. It came standard with a Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system, which included a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential, along with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system offering five drive modes: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Sand/Mud.
The Grand Wagoneer also featured a standard Quadra-Lift air suspension system, which was height-adjustable for off-roading, reducing aerodynamic drag on highways, or easing ingress and egress. With the suspension raised to its maximum height, it offered 25.4 centimetres of ground clearance, enabling a 25-degree approach angle, 24-degree departure angle, and 22-degree breakover angle. It could ford up to 60 centimetres of water and was equipped with skid plates for protection. Despite its powerful engine, the Grand Wagoneer was best driven at a stately pace, as its ride was too bouncy at higher speeds, and the steering was imprecise.
The 2022 Nissan Rogue's performance was invigorated by its new 1.5-litre VC-Turbo engine, which produced 201 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque. This engine featured a Variable Compression (VC) concept, allowing it to adjust the compression ratio mechanically for optimal power and efficiency. The Rogue's new engine offered an 11 percent increase in horsepower and a 24 percent increase in torque over the previous model. It also boasted impressive fuel consumption figures, with estimates of 7.8 litres per 100 kilometres city/6.5 highway/7.2 combined.
The Rogue's automatic transmission, though still a CVT, had wider gear ratios, providing more authority in acceleration and responsiveness in passing situations. The Rogue's chassis and suspension handled the new engine's lively character well, delivering a smooth and controlled ride with minimal body roll. The electric power-assisted steering offered good feel, and the 10.8-metre turning diameter was tight, making it easy to maneuver.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered seating for seven with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It provided more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Infiniti QX80, though space up front was more limited. The Grand Wagoneer offered 775 litres of cargo space with all three rows in place and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. With all rear seats folded, it provided 2,667 litres of cargo space, which was less than some rivals. It had a maximum towing capacity of 4,472 kilograms, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its extra weight.
The Grand Wagoneer came with a standard sunroof and four-zone automatic climate control, along with large first-row and second-row storage bins. However, the hoods of both the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer limited forward visibility, though the Grand Wagoneer’s standard 360-degree camera system helped mitigate this issue.
The 2022 Nissan Rogue, despite being only in its third generation, was a well-honed vehicle with smart storage solutions. The front cabin offered numerous storage options, including bottle holders, cupholders, a glove compartment, a centre console bin, a tray beneath the centre console, and cubbies in the dash. It also featured USB-A, USB-C, and 12-volt outlets above the wireless charging pad. Rear-seat passengers had storage options in the doors, seatbacks, and centre armrest, along with USB-A and USB-C charge-only ports.
The Rogue's cargo area was a standout feature, offering up to 1,033 litres of luggage space, which could be expanded to a generous 2,098 litres with the second row folded flat. This made it an ideal choice for those needing ample cargo space.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a standard infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a McIntosh audio system, and a 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Second-row passengers had their own 10.25-inch centre console touchscreen, and an optional rear seat entertainment system added a pair of 10.1-inch screens. The Grand Wagoneer also had a second screen below the main one for functions like seat massagers, and a separate 10.25-inch touchscreen for the front passenger.
The Grand Wagoneer used the Uconnect 5 infotainment system, featuring an Android-based operating system and over-the-air software update capability. While the screen was a bit slow to respond, the head-up display was clear and legible.
The 2022 Nissan Rogue's technology upgrade from its 2021 makeover carried over to the 2022 model. Upper trim levels featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 9-inch centre infotainment touchscreen, and a 10.8-inch head-up display. Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto were standard, with wireless Apple CarPlay available on upper trims. ProPilot Assist, Nissan’s hands-on driver-assist technology, was available and integrated with the navigation system on models with ProPilot Assist with Navi-Link.
Nissan’s Intelligent Key allowed for keyless entry on both front and rear doors, enhancing convenience for families. The Rogue's technology suite made it a strong contender in the compact crossover segment.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the time. However, it came with a comprehensive suite of standard safety features, including a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Optional features included intersection collision assist, driver-attention monitor, night vision, traffic-sign recognition, and two levels of driver-assistance systems.
The 2022 Nissan Rogue featured the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of safety technologies across all trim levels. Standard safety features included automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, high beam assist, and rear automatic braking. The Rogue also had ten supplemental airbags and extended crumple zones for passive safety. ProPilot Assist, a Level 2 advanced driver-assist system, was available, offering steering-assist and adaptive cruise control.
The 2022 Nissan Rogue received a four-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, highlighting its strong safety credentials.
