2021 Lexus GX Reviews Summaryost modern SUVs are really car-based crossovers—lifted station wagons, or minivans without the sliding doors. That’s not the case with the 2021 Lexus GX 460. Like the mythical Loch Ness Monster, the GX is a creature that time forgot. It’s one of the last SUVs with truck-like body-on-frame construction and true off-road capability. That’s because the GX is actually a rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (a smaller version of the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser not sold in North America), and is related to the Toyota 4Runner. It’s also genuinely old: the current generation dates back to the 2010 model year, and Lexus has kept it in production with some updates of styling and tech over the years. That makes the GX a fairly odd proposition on the new-car market. It has the off-road capability, not as a lifestyle statement, but because that’s what was still expected of SUVs when it was launched. The GX sits between the RX and LX in the Lexus lineup but has little direct competition. Its only real rival is the much newer Land Rover Discovery. For the 2021 model year, the GX gets some minor updates. Lexus continues to offer only the GX 460 model, with a single powertrain option, a standard four-wheel drive (4WD) drivetrain, and two pricing levels: base, or the Executive package.
2022 GMC Terrain Reviews Summary“Terrain” is a misnomer as applied to this compact crossover SUV from GMC. The name suggests far more off-roading capability than is available from this restyled Chevy Equinox, and the new AT4 trim level, which equips the 2022 GMC Terrain with standard all-wheel drive (AWD), “sport-terrain” tires, and a steel front skid plate, ought to come with a disclaimer. Based on our testing, the new 2022 Terrain AT4 is all show and no go, as in: “No, you can’t go there in this small SUV.” Not without damaging it, anyway.

The 2021 Lexus GX retained its decade-old body shell, with updates like the spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights. Despite its massive grille, the GX's styling was coherent and distinctive, appealing to SUV shoppers with its tough look. However, the interior felt outdated for a luxury SUV, with wood trim resembling plastic and an abundance of actual plastic. Standard semi-aniline leather was a plus, but overall, the interior didn't meet modern luxury standards.
In contrast, the 2022 GMC Terrain received updates to its front styling, wheel designs, and interior trim. The new AT4 trim featured a bold grille, black alloy wheels, and off-road enhancements like a steel skid plate. Our test vehicle, with its Ebony Twilight metallic paint and black leather interior, was loaded with tech and safety packages, making it a well-equipped option. Despite its entry-level status, the Terrain's interior materials and execution were not as refined as expected for its price range.

The 2021 Lexus GX was powered by a 4.6-litre V8 engine, producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. While the V8 provided ample power from a stop, the GX's weight of 2,349 kilograms affected its performance at higher speeds. Merging and overtaking required careful planning, and the ride quality was typical of a body-on-frame vehicle. However, the GX excelled off-road with features like a Torsen centre differential, 4WD system with low range, and Multi-Terrain Select.
The 2022 GMC Terrain featured a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 170 horsepower and 203 lb-ft of torque. The nine-speed automatic transmission kept the Terrain in the torque band, but acceleration was not as quick as the previous 2.0-litre engine. The Terrain AT4 offered FWD and AWD modes, with Off-Road and Hill Descent Control systems. Despite its off-road aspirations, the Terrain's ground clearance and handling were not sufficient for serious off-roading. The Terrain's fuel economy was commendable, matching official ratings during testing.
The 2021 Lexus GX's interior ergonomics showed its age, with limited legroom and an awkward steering wheel position. Visibility was excellent due to the dashboard shape and boxy profile, but forward visibility was hindered by the tall hood. Storage space was limited, and the third row was best for children. Cargo space was also restricted, with only 1,833 litres available with seats folded.
The 2022 GMC Terrain offered a roomy interior with power-adjustable front seats, heated features, and dual-zone climate control. The AT4 trim included leather upholstery with contrast stitching, providing an upscale feel. The back seat was spacious, and the Terrain offered numerous storage solutions. Cargo space was generous, with 838 litres behind the second row and 1,792 litres with seats folded. The front passenger seat could also be folded for longer items.
The 2021 Lexus GX was light on tech features, lacking Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The standard infotainment system had outdated graphics and limited functionality. However, analog controls were user-friendly, providing a refreshing alternative to touchscreen-centric systems.
The 2022 GMC Terrain offered two infotainment systems, with the larger 8-inch touchscreen available on higher trims. Features included wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. The voice recognition system was excellent, accurately responding to commands. The Tech Package added a head-up display, park assist sensors, and a surround-view camera system, enhancing the Terrain's tech offerings.
The 2021 Lexus GX included the Lexus Safety System+ with features like a pre-collision system, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. However, it lacked some advanced safety features found in other Lexus models.
The 2022 GMC Terrain came standard with the GMC Pro Safety Package, offering a comprehensive suite of driver-assist features. The Pro Safety Plus Package added adaptive cruise control and other enhancements. The Terrain received mostly "Good" crash-test scores from the IIHS, though it earned a "Marginal" rating in a new side-impact test. NHTSA ratings were not available.
