2021 Honda Odyssey Reviews Summary

When you’re raising kids, the last thing your life needs is added complication. The modern minivan is designed to eliminate snags, simplify your existence, and reduce friction in the daily grind. Whether you wish to save money on gas, carry maximum cargo, or own a vehicle that is ridiculously easy to load (whether we’re talking passengers or merchandise), a minivan makes good sense. And the freshened 2021 Honda Odyssey is one of our favourites, for now.

2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

Look and feel

2021 Honda Odyssey

9/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Honda Odyssey presented a familiar yet refreshed appearance, with updates to the grille, front bumper, and standard LED headlights across all trims. The addition of a gloss black spear with a chrome insert and a new 19-inch wheel design for the Touring trim modernized its look. The interior was enhanced with perforated leather upholstery, contrast stitching, and ambient lighting, giving it a more upscale feel. The Odyssey's design tweaks aimed to reduce brightwork, making it a more refined minivan option.

In contrast, the 2022 Lexus GX maintained a design reminiscent of its first-generation model, with the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights being the most notable updates. The interior, while not as dated as the exterior, retained a classic Lexus quality with smooth, refined materials. The cabin was quiet, with the V8 engine's roar barely audible. Despite its dated design, the GX's interior quality and comfort were consistent with Lexus's reputation for luxury.

Performance

2021 Honda Odyssey

8/10

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2021 Honda Odyssey was powered by a 3.5-litre V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, delivering 280 horsepower to the front wheels. It offered driving modes such as Normal, Sport, Eco, and Snow, along with paddle shifters. The V6 engine featured variable cylinder management for improved fuel efficiency, with a combined consumption estimate of 10.6 L/100 km. However, the lack of all-wheel drive was a disadvantage in snowy conditions. The Odyssey's ride and handling were enjoyable, with well-weighted steering and firm yet comfortable suspension. The brakes, though improved, struggled under heavy use, particularly in hot conditions.

The 2022 Lexus GX featured a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a full-time 4WD system. The GX's acceleration was leisurely, with a 0-60 mph time of 7.8 seconds, but it excelled in towing capacity, handling up to 2,948 kg. Its fuel consumption was higher, at 14.5 L/100 km, due to its weight and 4WD system. The GX's Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System improved stability and off-road capability, though the steering was slow and heavy, and the brake pedal was touchy.

Form and function

2021 Honda Odyssey

7/10

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

The 2021 Honda Odyssey offered a spacious and practical interior with logical controls and ample storage. The driver's seat was highly adjustable and comfortable, though the front passenger seat lacked height adjustment. The Magic Slide second-row seats provided versatile seating configurations, and the third-row seats were accommodating for both children and adults. Cargo space was generous, with up to 3,984 litres available, though removing the second-row seats was cumbersome.

The 2022 Lexus GX provided an elevated driving position and clear visibility, with comfortable seats and well-padded interiors. The controls were mostly physical, though some were outdated and confusingly placed. The rear seat access was limited by narrow door openings, and the third-row seat was cramped and reduced cargo space. The GX's cargo area was limited, with a maximum of 1,833 litres, and the side-opening tailgate was inconvenient for loading.

Technology

2021 Honda Odyssey

7/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Honda Odyssey featured an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Cabin Control app. Higher trims added navigation, a CabinWatch camera, and a CabinTalk PA system. The Touring trim offered a premium audio system and a Wi-Fi hotspot. However, the lack of a tuning knob and subpar voice recognition were drawbacks. The rear-seat entertainment system was not touchscreen, which disappointed some users.

The 2022 Lexus GX introduced a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a CD player. The system was easy to use, though the stereo controls were awkwardly placed. The GX offered a dual-screen view and excellent voice recognition. Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view cameras enhanced its technology offerings, though it lacked some modern features found in competitors.

Safety

2021 Honda Odyssey

9/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Honda Odyssey came with Honda Sensing as standard, including adaptive cruise control, pedestrian braking, and road-sign recognition. It earned top safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA, except for a four-star rollover resistance score. The Odyssey's ADAS was accurate but could be smoother in operation.

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but included Lexus Safety System+ with adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and more. It also had blind-spot monitoring and Safety Connect services. However, it missed some advanced safety technologies found in competitors, which might appeal to those preferring fewer driving aids.
