Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

Reviews Summary

The Jeep Grand Cherokee L is the three-row version of Jeep's popular midsize SUV. It continues into 2023 with higher prices and new competitors, namely the Land Rover Defender 130 and Toyota Grand Highlander. The style and 4x4 hardware are classic Jeep, but the Grand Cherokee L is built for comfort over raw capability. We tested the top trim, a Summit Reserve, which is priced at roughly $85,000 in Canada and worth it—most of the time.

Look and feel

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, resulting in a similar traditional SUV styling. It featured a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly, with laser-etched knurling in the slots, and the wheel centre caps had an acrylic glass covering to protect the “Wagoneer” logo. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent front and rear suspension, with an aluminum hood and doors, and a composite tailgate to save weight. Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered a high-end experience with 24-way power front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and optional higher-grade Palermo leather, along with aluminum and American Walnut wood trim.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L maintained the classic style of its predecessors while extending the length by over 30 centimetres. The Hydro Blue model with the High Altitude package featured a blacked-out grille, logos, and door handles, complemented by dark grey 21-inch wheels and black leather with gold stitching. The interior boasted a polished black dash, a thick metal dial for the gear selector, and toggle switches for driving modes and air suspension. The diamond-patterned stitching on the seats and door panels added a touch of elegance. Despite some hard plastics and rougher-grained leather, the overall interior quality was impressive, especially on upper trims. The Grand Cherokee L offered a spacious cabin with ample legroom, particularly in the second row, and a third row best suited for children.

Performance

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, allowed the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds. The vehicle featured standard four-wheel drive with the Quadra-Drive II system, offering five drive modes and a height-adjustable Quadra-Lift air suspension system. With a maximum ground clearance of 25.4 centimetres, the Grand Wagoneer could tackle various terrains, although its size limited its off-road capabilities. The cabin was quiet, and the air suspension provided a smooth ride, but the vehicle felt ungainly at higher speeds.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L came with a standard 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine, producing 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. While the V6 was considered underwhelming, an optional 5.7-litre Hemi V8 engine offered 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque, improving towing capacity to 3,265 kilograms. The Grand Cherokee L's chassis provided confident handling, and the air suspension allowed for smooth cornering. The vehicle featured three different four-wheel-drive systems, with the Quadra-Drive II offering a low-range transfer case and limited-slip differential. The air suspension provided up to 27.6 centimetres of ground clearance, making the Grand Cherokee L a capable off-road vehicle.

Form and function

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered seating for seven with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It provided more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. However, the front-row space was more limited. The Grand Wagoneer offered 775 litres of cargo space with all seats in place and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. With all rear seats folded, the cargo space was 2,667 litres. The vehicle had a maximum towing capacity of 4,472 kilograms and came with a standard sunroof and four-zone automatic climate control.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L's extended wheelbase provided more legroom for second-row passengers, with standard second-row captain's chairs. The Summit and Summit Reserve trims included a centre console with storage, four-zone climate control, and heated rear seats. The third row was power-folding, while the second row was manual. The Grand Cherokee L offered 481 litres of cargo space behind the third row, 1,330 litres behind the second row, and 2,407 litres with both rows folded. The vehicle featured a power liftgate and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof on higher trims.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. The second-row passengers had a 10.25-inch centre console touchscreen, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system offered an Android-based operating system and over-the-air software updates. However, the screen response was slow, and the instrument cluster graphics were plain.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L came with an 8.4-inch touchscreen on lower trims and a 10.1-inch touchscreen on higher trims. The Uconnect 5 system was quick and easy to use, despite some legibility issues. The vehicle featured a McIntosh sound system, night vision, and Active Driving Assist. The passenger screen in the dash was only active when a front passenger was seated and could control navigation, cameras, and the "FamCam" feature. The Grand Cherokee L offered numerous tech features not found in competitors.

Safety

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer had not yet been rated by the IIHS or NHTSA. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included intersection collision assist, driver-attention monitor, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. The Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centring.

The 2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee L received a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS for models built after May 2023 and scored five stars in NHTSA tests, except for rollover, which scored four stars. Standard safety features included front knee airbags, forward emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features included front cross-traffic braking, a backup camera washer, and 360-degree cameras. Night vision was available on higher trims.
