Jeep’s new flagship brings back an old name for 2022 with the return of the Grand Wagoneer.
Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.
Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).
Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.
To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.
Because it shares a frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer looks very similar to that lower-level model (and both resemble the smaller 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee L). That means you get very traditional SUV styling, with a tall hood, broad shoulders, trapezoidal wheel arches, and an upright profile.
The Grand Wagoneer is differentiated from the standard Wagoneer by a standard black roof and model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille. Unlike the flat Wagoneer grille, the Grand Wagoneer version leans forward a bit, with laser-etched knurling in the grille slots. The wheel centre caps (20-inch wheels are standard, 22-inch wheels are optional on Series I and standard on other grades) also have an acrylic glass covering to protect the “Wagoneer” logo inside.
Under the sheet metal is a new body-on-frame architecture shared with the standard Wagoneer. It enables independent front and rear suspension, while the body features an aluminum hood and doors, as well as a composite tailgate, to save weight.
The Grand Wagoneer shares interior-styling features with the Wagoneer, including a nicely integrated infotainment touchscreen, large rotary shift knob, and a two-spoke steering wheel. However, this high-end model gets more convenience features and higher-quality materials.
To help differentiate it from the Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer gets 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, lumbar support, and four-way power headrests, plus standard heated first- and second-row seats and a heated steering wheel and optional ventilated second-row seats. Nappa leather upholstery is standard, and higher-grade Palermo leather is available, along with aluminum and American Walnut wood trim.
Other subtle differences separate the Grand Wagoneer interior from the Wagoneer cabin, including seat controls placed high on the doors, Mercedes-style. Jeep also spelled out “Grand Wagoneer” on the passenger’s side of the dashboard, in case you forget what vehicle you’re in.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is offered solely with a 6.4-litre Hemi V8, which produces power specs of 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, and it has cylinder deactivation for improved fuel efficiency. Coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the V8 engine will propel the Grand Wagoneer from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in roughly six seconds, according to Jeep. Not bad for an approximately 2,900-kilogram (6,400-pound) vehicle.
Unlike the base Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer gets standard four-wheel drive (4WD). The standard Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system includes a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential to maximize traction. Quadra-Drive II also includes Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system, with five drive modes: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow, and Sand/Mud.
Another feature that’s optional on the Wagoneer but standard on the Grand Wagoneer is the Quadra-Lift air suspension system. It’s height-adjustable, allowing the driver to jack up the Grand Wagoneer for off-roading, lower it to reduce aerodynamic drag on highways, or slam it down to make ingress and egress easier (available power running boards help with that as well).
With the suspension raised to its maximum height, Jeep quotes 25.4 centimetres of ground clearance, enabling 25-degree approach angle, 24-degree departure angle, and 22-degree breakover angle. Jeep also claims the Grand Wagoneer can ford up to 60 centimeters of water, and it’s equipped with skid plates should you hit any rocks.
Like its Wagoneer sibling, the Grand Wagoneer impressed us with its quiet cabin, and the air suspension soaked up every bump. Despite the amount of thrust available from the 6.4-litre V8, however, this is a vehicle best driven at a stately pace. At higher speeds, the ride was too bouncy for our tastes, and the imprecise steering meant corners had to be approached with the deliberate movement of a boat maneuvering around a buoy. Even by full-size luxury SUV standards, the Grand Wagoneer felt ungainly.
We didn’t get to take the Grand Wagoneer off-road, but the mechanically similar Wagoneer performed well on a short course set up by Jeep. The Grand Wagoneer’s size will likely be the biggest limiting factor out on the trail, and it’s also why the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer don’t get Jeep’s “Trail Rated” badge.
The Grand Wagoneer seats seven with the standard second-row captain’s chairs, or eight with the optional third-row bench seat. It offers more third-row headroom, as well as more second-row legroom, than the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Infiniti QX80, but space up front is more limited. The Escalade and Navigator have more first-row headroom and legroom, while the Lincoln offers more third-row legroom and ties the Jeep for second-row headroom.
At 775 litres with all three rows in place and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed, the Grand Wagoneer offers more cargo space than its rivals do in the configurations that will likely be used the most. Fold all rear seats, though, and the Jeep’s 2,667 litres of cargo space drops below the Escalade's, Navigator's, and QX80's.
Jeep quotes a maximum towing capacity of 4,472 kilograms (9,850 pounds). That’s less than the 4,536-kilogram (10,000-pound) tow rating of the standard Wagoneer, which uses a smaller 5.7-litre V8 teamed with a mild-hybrid system, but still more than competitors. The difference is due to the extra weight of the Grand Wagoneer, according to Jeep. Making the tow vehicle heavier subtracts from the amount of weight that can be towed.
The Grand Wagoneer gets a standard sunroof and four-zone automatic climate control, as well as the large first-row and second-row storage bins from the standard Wagoneer. We found that the hoods of both vehicles limited forward visibility, although the Grand Wagoneer’s standard 360-degree camera system (an optional extra on the Wagoneer) helps with this somewhat.
The standard infotainment system includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with 3D graphics, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, McIntosh audio system, simultaneous pairing for two Bluetooth-enabled phones, and a 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot that can support up to eight devices. Second-row passengers also get their own 10.25-inch centre console touchscreen for functions like climate control, while an optional rear seat entertainment system adds a pair of 10.1-inch screens.
The Grand Wagoneer not only gets a bigger touchscreen than the standard Wagoneer (12 inches versus 10.1 inches), but it also gets a second screen positioned below the main screen for functions like the seat massagers. A row of buttons separates the two, allowing for quick selection of important functions and specific touchscreen menus.
Like the standard Wagoneer, the Grand Wagoneer can also be equipped with a separate 10.25-inch touchscreen for the front passenger, which can control things like navigation and the optional rear-seat entertainment system. Screen sharing also allows passengers to search for a destination and send it to the navigation system.
The Grand Wagoneer uses the Uconnect 5 infotainment system from Jeep parent company Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles). Uconnect 5 features an Android-based operating system and over-the-air (OTA) software update capability. As with the standard Wagoneer, we found the screen to be a bit slow to respond, and we thought the instrument cluster’s graphics were too plain, but the head-up display was clear and legible any time of day.
Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) aren’t available yet, as the Wagoneer is a newly launched model.
Standard safety features include the above-mentioned 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking (with pedestrian and cyclist detection), adaptive cruise control (with stop and go) blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors. Optional features include a intersection collision assist, driver-attention monitor, night vision, traffic-sign recognition, and two levels of driver-assistance systems.
Available at launch, Active Lane Management System combines adaptive cruise control with automated lane centring, but it still requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel. Jeep plans to follow that up with a hands-free version at a later date. This will only work on certain stretches of highway, and it will include driver monitoring to guard against misuse, according to Jeep.
Natural Resources Canada fuel consumption ratings for the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer are 18.6 litres per 100 kilometres city, 12.8 highway, 16.0 combined. Those numbers seem more reminiscent of the Grand Wagoneer’s 1980s predecessor than a modern vehicle, but it's an automotive fact that any big SUV still comes with a major efficiency penalty. A V8-powered, 4WD Cadillac Escalade can only manage 15.1 L/100 km combined (14.7 with engine stop-start equipped), while a 4WD Lincoln Navigator can still only muster 13.2 L/100 km combined, even with a smaller twin-turbo V6 engine.
Jeep offers a three-year, 60,000-kilometre, limited warranty and five-year, 100,000-kilometre, powertrain warranty, the same warranty offered on all Chrysler, Dodge, Ram, Jeep, and Fiat vehicles in Canada.
Pricing starts at $101,495 for the base Grand Wagoneer Series I trim level, which is $15,000 more than a top-of-the-line Wagoneer (destination charges range from $1,895 to $2,795 and are extra). The Grand Wagoneer Series II and Obsidian start at $107,495 and $114,495, respectively, while the top Grand Wagoneer Series III model has a $121,495 base MSRP.
Those six-figure prices show what Jeep is trying to achieve with the Grand Wagoneer. This is no Wrangler. For similar money, you can get a Lincoln Navigator or Cadillac Escalade, both from pedigreed luxury brands.
Jeep deserves credit for making multiple screens the Grand Wagoneer’s tech showpiece, rather than the Escalade’s massive single OLED display, which can only be used by the driver. Jeep’s approach makes more sense in a three-row SUV. However, we don’t know how Jeep’s drive assist technology will measure up to Cadillac’s Super Cruise.
The Grand Wagoneer offers impressive off-road capability, but on the road it doesn’t surpass the Navigator, let alone European alternatives like the BMW X7, Land Rover Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz GLS. The Infiniti QX80 is way behind when it comes to tech and passenger space, but it’s much less expensive than a loaded Grand Wagoneer, and it still offers some off-road capability. The Grand Wagoneer might be a big deal for Jeep, and for current Jeep owners looking to upgrade to a bigger vehicle, but it doesn’t change the status quo of this segment.
