Reviews Summary

Verdict: Even the base model Cayenne delivers an agile driving experience, but those willing to dig deep into their bank account for one of Porsche’s more expensive Cayenne models are rewarded with a spirited drive like no other. The competition here is stiff, in the form of other German SUVs like the Audi Q8, BMW X5, and Mercedes-Benz GLE, and their performance variants. However, the Cayenne is not here to lose.

Reviews Summary

Given the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action.

Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review).

Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe.

To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was a striking presence on the road, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, which lent it a traditional SUV aesthetic. Its tall hood, broad shoulders, and upright profile were complemented by model-specific features like a standard black roof, a unique hood, front fascia, and a forward-leaning grille with laser-etched knurling. The Grand Wagoneer also boasted 20-inch wheels as standard, with 22-inch wheels available on higher trims. Inside, it shared design elements with the Wagoneer but elevated the experience with high-end materials and features such as 24-way power front seats with memory and massage functions, Nappa leather upholstery, and optional Palermo leather. The interior was further distinguished by seat controls placed high on the doors and a "Grand Wagoneer" badge on the dashboard.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne, available as a standard SUV or a sporty Coupe, offered a range of trims from the base model to the high-performance Turbo E-Hybrid. The GTS trim, in particular, stood out with high gloss black trim, a unique front fascia with larger air intakes, and tinted headlights. The Cayenne Coupe featured an adaptive rear spoiler, while the GTS trim showcased red brake calipers and 21-inch wheels. Inside, the Cayenne allowed for extensive customization, from the colour of the interior to the trim and seat belts. The cabin was well-organized, with mechanical controls for essential functions and a shifter toggle mounted on the dashboard for additional storage space. The GTS trim featured a Race-Tex headliner and a GT Sport steering wheel, with options for Race-Tex or leather upholstery.

Performance

2025 Porsche Cayenne

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, enabled the Grand Wagoneer to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds. The vehicle featured a standard Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential, along with a height-adjustable Quadra-Lift air suspension system. With a maximum ground clearance of 25.4 cm, the Grand Wagoneer could tackle various terrains, although its size limited its off-road capabilities. Despite its powerful engine, the Grand Wagoneer was best suited for a leisurely driving pace, as its ride became bouncy at higher speeds.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered a range of engine options, including a base 3.0-litre V6 with 348 horsepower and a Turbo GT with 650 horsepower. The GTS trim, with its twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8, produced 493 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque, allowing it to reach 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The Cayenne's performance was enhanced by components borrowed from the Turbo GT, such as increased negative camber in the front wheels and a lower centre of gravity. The GTS trim featured Pirelli P Zero tires, stiffer roll bars, and an active suspension system, resulting in agile handling. The Cayenne's steering was precise, and the optional carbon ceramic brakes provided ample stopping power. In Normal mode, the GTS transformed into a comfortable commuter, offering a balance between sporty performance and daily driving comfort.

Form and function

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer accommodated seven passengers with standard second-row captain’s chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It offered more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. However, its front-row space was more limited. The Grand Wagoneer provided 775 litres of cargo space with all seats in place and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. Its maximum towing capacity was 4,472 kg, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its additional weight. Standard features included a sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and large storage bins.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne, while not offering a third row, provided a comfortable second row with ample headroom. The base model featured eight-way power-adjustable seats, with options for 14- or 18-way adjustable seats. The Cayenne's cargo space was smaller than some competitors, with 772 litres behind the second row and 1,708 litres with the seats folded down. The Coupe version offered less space, with 576 and 1,486 litres, respectively. The Cayenne could tow up to 3,500 kg and accommodate over 635 kg of payload. The options list was extensive, allowing for customization of interior materials and features.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. Second-row passengers had access to a 10.25-inch touchscreen for climate control, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system, with an Android-based operating system, supported over-the-air updates. While the system was comprehensive, the screen response was occasionally slow, and the instrument cluster graphics were plain.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne boasted a curved 12.6-inch digital gauge cluster and a 12.3-inch touchscreen display with the Porsche Communication Management system. It included wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Spotify, Apple Music, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. An optional 10.9-inch passenger screen allowed for navigation and media control. The system was responsive and user-friendly, with voice control options. A head-up display provided essential information, although it appeared dim with polarized sunglasses. The Cayenne also featured night-vision assist and four high-speed USB-C charging ports.

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer

7/10

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer came with standard safety features such as a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features included intersection collision assist, driver-attention monitor, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. The Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with automated lane centring, with a hands-free version planned for future release. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time.

The 2025 Porsche Cayenne offered standard parking sensors, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring. However, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and lane-departure warning were optional. Porsche's InnoDrive adaptive cruise control system, which anticipated traffic incidents, was not tested due to the car's German specifications. Neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS had rated the 2025 Cayenne for safety.
