2022 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews SummaryYou said it and Nissan listened. The automaker is bringing back much of the heralded capability of the classic Pathfinder, as well as a rugged-ish body style, for the 2022 model year. Thoughtful innovations and features make the Pathfinder more than just a competent family hauler while Nissan’s safety tech puts minds at ease.
2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Reviews SummaryGiven the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action. Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review). Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe. To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder showcased a bold redesign that drew inspiration from the brand's latest SUV design language. It featured a new V-motion grille, reminiscent of the Rogue and Armada, with the updated Nissan logo prominently displayed. The LED headlights and slim daytime running lights added a modern touch, while the C-pillar design paid homage to the original Pathfinder. With 11 paint options and a distinctive black roof, the Pathfinder presented a robust and contemporary aesthetic. The SUV's wider stance and increased height contributed to its rugged appearance, aligning it with the likes of the Kia Telluride.
Inside, the Pathfinder offered a refined and upscale environment, especially in its higher trims. The interior was designed to be more luxurious than its competitors, such as the Highlander and Pilot. The vehicle provided ample space with standard eight-passenger seating, except for the Platinum trim, which featured second-row captain's chairs. The use of high-quality materials, including semi-aniline leather in the SL and Platinum trims, elevated the cabin's appeal. The Pathfinder's design changes aimed to position it as a more capable and rugged option in the midsize SUV segment.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer shared its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, resulting in a similar traditional SUV styling. It featured a tall hood, broad shoulders, and trapezoidal wheel arches, giving it an upright profile. The Grand Wagoneer distinguished itself with a black roof, unique hood, front fascia, and grille. The grille leaned forward slightly, with laser-etched knurling in the slots, adding a touch of sophistication. The vehicle's body-on-frame architecture allowed for independent suspension, while aluminum and composite materials helped reduce weight.
Inside, the Grand Wagoneer offered a luxurious experience with high-end materials and advanced features. It boasted 24-way power front seats with memory, massage, and lumbar support, along with heated first- and second-row seats. Nappa leather upholstery was standard, with the option for higher-grade Palermo leather. The interior also featured aluminum and American Walnut wood trim, adding to its premium feel. The Grand Wagoneer's cabin was designed to provide a quiet and comfortable ride, although its size and weight made it less agile than some competitors.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder retained its 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque. While some enthusiasts hoped for alternative fuel options, the V6 provided ample power for most driving situations. The engine was paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission, replacing the previous CVT. This transmission offered smooth gear changes and was complemented by an electronic shift-by-wire drive selector and paddle shifters. The Pathfinder's all-wheel-drive system, standard in Canada, included hill descent control and seven drive modes, enhancing its versatility.
The Pathfinder's suspension improvements contributed to a stable and comfortable ride, absorbing road imperfections effectively. Its steering was responsive, making it easy to maneuver in urban settings and on off-road trails. With a maximum towing capacity of 2,720 kilograms, the Pathfinder was well-suited for hauling. The vehicle's transmission occasionally struggled at higher speeds, but a brief release of the gas pedal allowed it to recalibrate. Overall, the Pathfinder offered a balanced performance for a family SUV.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, producing 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine featured cylinder deactivation for improved fuel efficiency and was paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Wagoneer could accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in approximately six seconds, impressive for its size. The vehicle came standard with a Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system, including a two-speed transfer case and electronic limited-slip differential, enhancing traction.
The Grand Wagoneer's Quadra-Lift air suspension system allowed for adjustable ride height, improving off-road capability and highway efficiency. With a maximum ground clearance of 25.4 centimetres, the vehicle could tackle challenging terrains. However, its size and weight made it less agile, and the ride could be bouncy at higher speeds. Despite its powerful engine, the Grand Wagoneer was best suited for a more leisurely driving style. Its off-road capabilities were impressive, but its size limited its maneuverability on trails.
The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder prioritized interior comfort and versatility. Its cabin was designed to minimize road noise, with improved insulation and acoustic laminated glass. The vehicle offered flexible seating arrangements, accommodating up to eight passengers, with the option for second-row captain's chairs. The EZ Flex Latch and Glide system made accessing the third row easy, even with car seats installed. The Pathfinder provided ample cargo space, with 470 litres behind the third row and up to 2,421 litres with the second and third rows folded.
The Pathfinder's interior featured thoughtful innovations, such as a removable second-row centre console and a spacious front centre console. The vehicle's design allowed for easy loading of large items, with flush rear cargo space sides and under-floor storage. The Pathfinder's seats were comfortable, with heated front seats standard and ventilated seats available in the Platinum trim. Tri-zone automatic climate control and numerous cup holders added to the vehicle's family-friendly appeal.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered a spacious and luxurious interior, seating seven with standard second-row captain's chairs or eight with an optional third-row bench seat. It provided more third-row headroom and second-row legroom than competitors like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. However, front-row space was more limited compared to these rivals. The Grand Wagoneer offered 775 litres of cargo space with all seats in place and 2,667 litres with all rear seats folded.
The Grand Wagoneer's towing capacity was 4,472 kilograms, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its additional weight. The vehicle featured a standard sunroof, four-zone automatic climate control, and ample storage bins. While its hood limited forward visibility, the standard 360-degree camera system helped mitigate this issue. The Grand Wagoneer's interior was designed for comfort and convenience, with high-quality materials and advanced features enhancing the overall experience.
The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a range of technology features designed to enhance the driving experience without overwhelming users. Standard features included an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, six-speaker audio system, and smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The vehicle also offered a 7-inch digital driver-information display and multiple USB ports for connectivity. Higher trims featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a head-up display, and a 13-speaker Bose Premium Audio system.
The Pathfinder's upper trims included a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen, wireless charging pad, and additional USB ports. The vehicle's technology package was designed to be user-friendly, providing essential features without unnecessary complexity. The Pathfinder's infotainment system offered clear graphics and intuitive controls, making it easy for drivers to access information and entertainment on the go.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a comprehensive infotainment system with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and dual touchscreens. It supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with a McIntosh audio system and a 4G-LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. Second-row passengers had access to a 10.25-inch centre console touchscreen, while an optional rear-seat entertainment system added two 10.1-inch screens.
The Grand Wagoneer's infotainment system included a second screen below the main display for additional functions. A separate 10.25-inch touchscreen for the front passenger allowed for navigation control and screen sharing. The vehicle used the Uconnect 5 system, featuring an Android-based operating system and over-the-air updates. While the system offered extensive functionality, some users found the screen response slow and the instrument cluster graphics plain.
The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder came standard with Nissan Safety Shield 360, a suite of safety features including automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. Additional safety features included a driver alertness monitor, rear door alert, and forward-collision warning. The vehicle was equipped with ten airbags, with the Platinum trim adding an eleventh. While crash-test ratings were not available, the Pathfinder's safety features provided comprehensive protection for occupants.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered a range of standard safety features, including a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. Optional features included intersection collision assist, night vision, and traffic-sign recognition. The vehicle's Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with lane centring, with a hands-free version planned for future release. While crash-test ratings were not available, the Grand Wagoneer's safety features were designed to enhance driver confidence and passenger protection.
