2022 Jeep Wrangler Reviews Summary

For a long time, the Jeep Wrangler represented a vehicle class of one. Where else could you get a two-door or four-door convertible with removable doors, a fold-down windshield, and go-anywhere off-roading capability wrapped in retro styling cues? Today, the Ford Bronco meets that same description and, in some ways, it's superior to the 2022 Jeep Wrangler. But we love this anachronistic throwback of an SUV anyway, warts and all, even if the overall rating appears to suggest otherwise. And a handful of changes to the 2022 Wrangler do nothing but further cement our appreciation of this formerly one-of-a-kind vehicle.

2022 Toyota RAV4 Reviews Summary

Once dismissed as a “cute ute,” the Toyota RAV4 has evolved into a compact SUV to reckon with. From a range of efficient powertrains to a roomy, flexible interior and stylish exterior, the RAV4 has the goods to compete with the best SUVs.

2022 Jeep Wrangler

9/10

2022 Toyota RAV4

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered a choice between the classic two-door and the more practical four-door body style, catering to different preferences. Buyers could select from a variety of powertrains, including a turbocharged four-cylinder, a gasoline-powered V6, a turbodiesel V6, a gas V8, or the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid. The standard six-speed manual transmission could be upgraded to an eight-speed automatic, and four-wheel drive was a standard feature with multiple systems available depending on the trim level. The Wrangler came in four core trims: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon, with numerous special editions like the Willys and Willys Sport, Sahara High Altitude, and Wrangler Rubicon 392. The High Tide model, based on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport S trim, was a special edition in the US market, featuring options like LED exterior lighting and a body-colour hardtop with a Sunrider Fliptop. Despite its rugged appeal, the Wrangler's interior was basic, with durable cloth upholstery and practical features like floor drain plugs, but it lacked the plushness expected at its price point.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4, a mature crossover SUV, had evolved significantly since its introduction in 1996. It was a sales leader in Canada, often topping the SUV charts. The RAV4's exterior design was in line with current crossover trends, featuring angular wheel arches and expressive headlights that gave it a playful yet aggressive look. Inside, the RAV4 boasted a layered dash with contrasting textures and colours, anchored by a straightforward centre stack. The touchscreen interface was conveniently positioned for minimal distraction, and the interior design included unique geometric patterns that tied the cabin together. The RAV4's fit and finish elevated its overall quality, making it a standout in its class.

2022 Toyota RAV4

8/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler was equipped with a 3.6-litre V6 engine featuring eTorque mild-hybrid electrification, providing 285 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm. It came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and the optional Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system, ideal for slippery conditions. Despite its off-road prowess, the Wrangler's fuel consumption was high, averaging 14.0 L/100 km over a week of testing. The driving experience was unique, with a rough ride, loud cabin, and touchy brakes, but it offered an immersive experience that appealed to off-road enthusiasts.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 offered three powertrains, with the gasoline-only model featuring a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. It came with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available on higher trims. The RAV4 Hybrid and RAV4 Prime offered enhanced performance and fuel efficiency, with the Prime capable of running up to 68 kilometres on electricity alone. The RAV4's handling was car-like, with a four-wheel independent suspension and dynamic torque vectoring for improved cornering. Its fuel efficiency and smooth power delivery made it a practical choice for everyday driving.

Form and function

2022 Toyota RAV4

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's interior was rugged, with comfortable seats and durable cloth upholstery. However, getting in and out was challenging, especially with a raised suspension. Visibility was mixed, with some areas requiring adjustments for better sightlines. The rear seats offered decent accommodations, but storage options were limited. The Wrangler Unlimited provided 898 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, expanding to 2,050 litres with the seats folded.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 offered ample interior space, with 1,059 litres of luggage capacity behind the second row, expanding to 1,977 litres with the seats folded. It had a healthy payload capacity and towing capabilities, making it versatile for various needs. The RAV4's interior was roomy and comfortable, with plenty of storage options and thoughtful features like dual-zone climate control and a power-adjustable driver's seat. The cabin was well-designed, providing a pleasant environment for both driver and passengers.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's technology was basic, with a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth connectivity, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Optional upgrades included a larger Uconnect 8.4 system with satellite radio and navigation. The Wrangler also featured remote engine starting, satellite radio, and a passive keyless entry system. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were part of the Cold Weather Group, enhancing comfort during colder months.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 came with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, six-speaker audio, and smartphone integration. Higher trims offered a 9-inch touchscreen with an 11-speaker JBL audio system, navigation, and additional connectivity features. The RAV4 Prime showcased advanced technology, including multiple USB ports, auxiliary power outlets, and a wireless charging pad. Top trims also offered a bird’s-eye view camera system and a head-up display, enhancing convenience and safety.

2022 Toyota RAV4

9/10

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offered optional safety features through the Safety Group and Advanced Safety Group, including blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking. However, its crash-test ratings were mediocre, with a three-star rollover resistance rating from the NHTSA and Marginal ratings from the IIHS. Safety features were not standard, and the Wrangler required careful driving due to its design.

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 came with Toyota’s Star Safety System and Toyota Safety Sense 2.0, offering a comprehensive suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic emergency braking. The RAV4 was an IIHS Top Safety Pick, with the RAV4 Prime earning a Top Safety Pick+ rating. The NHTSA awarded the RAV4 its highest five-star rating, highlighting its strong safety credentials.
