2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Have you heard of Genesis, the luxury off-shoot brand created by Hyundai Motor Group a little more than five years ago? Those who follow the automotive industry may be aware of the brand’s intentionally disruptive character. But it’s not a surprise if the name is new to you: Genesis launched somewhat quietly with a line-up of sedans including the Genesis G70 and Genesis G80, initially lacking in the luxury SUV options Canadian buyers crave. Now, those are starting to arrive, first with the mid-size Genesis GV80 launched last year, and now the new GV70, a compact two-row SUV that casually drops into Canada’s most competitive luxury segment. Genesis says it expects this vehicle to double its Canadian sales—and it might achieve that goal, provided it can get the attention of Canadians in a segment already overflowing with stiff competition.

2022 Chevrolet Blazer Reviews Summary

Have you ever found yourself thinking that you’d love to have a new Chevy Camaro but what you really need is a midsize SUV? If so, you’ll want to consider the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer, a Camaro-influenced crossover that seats up to five people and carries up to 1,818 litres of cargo. However, unlike Blazers of yore, the 2022 Blazer is best used on pavement. Generally speaking, though, aside from its sporty styling and overall adequacy, there isn’t much here to titillate a typical SUV buyer. Or Camaro dreamer.

Look and feel

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

7/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 stood out with its distinctive styling, diverging from the rest of the brand’s lineup. It featured the brand’s signature two-line lighting, creating an illusion of a contiguous circle around the vehicle. The GV70’s design was unique, with a shoulder line and accent lines that set it apart from other Genesis models. The Sport and Sport Plus grades boasted a sculpted hood and dark chrome finishes, enhancing its sporty appeal. Customers could choose from over 100 colour combinations, with exclusive options for the Sport grades. Inside, the GV70’s cabin featured an elliptical theme, with premium materials and unique upholstery configurations, although some plastic elements were present.

In contrast, the 2022 Chevrolet Blazer offered a Camaro-inspired design, both inside and out. The RS trim, in particular, featured sporty red interior accents that matched the exterior paint. The Blazer’s styling was appealing, though the black trim on the rear bumper gave it an unfinished look. Inside, the Blazer had a straightforward layout with an 8-inch touchscreen and innovative climate controls. However, the use of hard plastic was noticeable, especially on the upper door panels. The Blazer’s interior was spacious, with ample storage options and a colour scheme that added sophistication.

Performance

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

5/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two engine options: a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 375 horsepower. The V6 engine, equipped in the test unit, delivered impressive power, rivaling mid-level performance competitors like the BMW X3 M40i. The GV70 featured an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, prioritizing the rear axle. The Sport Plus grade included an electronic limited-slip differential, enhancing torque distribution. The GV70’s drive modes, including Sport+, provided aggressive throttle response and improved handling. The electronically controlled suspension system balanced comfort and road feedback, while the tight turning radius was advantageous in urban settings.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer LT came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 228 horsepower, while higher grades featured a 3.6-litre V6 with 308 horsepower. The RS trim had a dual-clutch AWD system for improved traction. The V6 engine offered satisfying acceleration, though it was loud and unrefined. The Blazer’s driving modes included Tour, Sport, Slippery, and Tow/Haul. While the Blazer RS felt sporty in city and highway driving, it struggled on winding roads, with a suspension that bounced excessively and a slow-shifting transmission. The steering in Sport mode felt artificially heavy, detracting from the driving experience. Fuel consumption was slightly higher than expected, averaging 11.5 L/100 km.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

6/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 prioritized the driver with a tall centre console and intuitive controls. The infotainment system was easy to use, and the climate controls provided haptic feedback. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel were standard, with ventilated seats available on higher trims. The rear passenger space was enhanced by a panoramic sunroof, though storage was limited. The GV70 offered 819 litres of cargo space, expandable to 1,610 litres with the rear seats folded. Overall, the GV70’s ergonomics and functionality were above average.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer provided a comfortable and practical interior. The RS trim featured black leather upholstery with red accents, adding a sporty touch. The steering wheel was adjustable and heated, while the front seats offered power adjustment and optional ventilation. The Blazer’s dual-zone climate control was effective, and rear passengers benefited from air vents and USB ports. The back seat was spacious and adjustable, with ample storage options throughout the cabin. The Blazer’s cargo area measured 864 litres, expanding to 1,818 litres with the rear seats folded, though these figures were small for a midsize SUV.

Technology

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

6/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 excelled in technology, featuring a 14.5-inch high-definition infotainment screen with split-screen capability. The system supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though not wirelessly. The premium Sport Plus grade included a 3D digital instrument cluster and a fingerprint recognition system for keyless start. A nine-speaker audio system was standard, with an 18-speaker Lexicon surround sound system available on top trims. The GV70 also offered USB ports for both front and rear passengers.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer’s technology was user-friendly, with an 8-inch touchscreen and simple controls. The RS trim included a power-adjustable steering wheel and heated front seats. Dual-zone climate control was standard, and rear passengers had access to air vents and USB ports. The Blazer’s infotainment system was straightforward, though it lacked the advanced features of the GV70. The Blazer’s technology was practical and effective, but not as innovative as the GV70’s offerings.

Safety

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2022 Chevrolet Blazer

7/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came equipped with ten standard safety features, including blind spot collision avoidance, lane-keeping assist, and forward collision avoidance. The rear occupant alert system used radar to detect movement in the second row. The Highway Driving Assist system provided lane centring and automatic lane changing, though it required the driver’s hands on the wheel. Safety ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA were not available at the time of publication.

The 2022 Chevrolet Blazer featured the Chevy Safety Assist suite, including forward-collision alert, lane-keep assist, and automatic high beams. The rear-seat reminder system and Teen Driver technology were standard. Available upgrades included the Safety Alert Seat, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. The Blazer’s safety systems were effective, though the IIHS did not award it a “Top Safety Pick” due to headlight performance.
