2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Reviews Summary

Launched for the 2020 model year, the Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is a two-row, five-seat version of the Volkswagen Atlas family crossover, itself a fairly new model, having launched for the 2018 model year.

The two-row midsize crossover segment is experiencing a resurgence, with newer models like the Cross Sport, Toyota Venza, Honda Passport, and Chevrolet Blazer joining the aging Ford Edge and Nissan Murano. VW also named the Jeep Grand Cherokee as a competitor to the Cross Sport, but the Jeep is a more traditional SUV.

Typically for a model entering its sophomore year, the Cross Sport doesn’t get many updates for 2021. The only change is VW’s new MIB3 infotainment system for most trim levels, and two new driver-assist features: Travel Assist and Emergency Assist.

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is available in four trim levels: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline, and Execline. In Canada, 4Motion all-wheel drive (AWD) is standard while front-wheel drive (FWD) is not offered. The option to choose between the four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines is available on all trims but the base model. Our test car was a U.S. model, the approximate Canadian equivalent being the Execline grade with the six-cylinder engine.

2022 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Based on the same rugged traditional SUV platform with body-on-frame construction as the Toyota 4Runner, the 2022 Lexus GX is something akin to a Japanese Land Rover. Designed for maximum off-roading capability and only then refined for use as a luxurious daily driver, it has a standard V8 engine, standard four-wheel drive (4WD), and a standard unquenchable thirst for fuel. And though Lexus markets the GX as a three-row, seven-passenger SUV, it is best used to carry five people and 1,322 litres of cargo behind its second-row seat.

Look and feel

2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

5/10

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport presented a unique blend of SUV ruggedness and car-like features, with its low roofline and aggressively raked rear hatch. This design choice, reminiscent of luxury automakers' "crossover coupes," resulted in a somewhat awkward aesthetic. The vehicle's dimensions were slightly reduced compared to the seven-seat Atlas, maintaining the same wheelbase but with a shorter and lower profile. Standard LED lighting and a variety of wheel options added to its visual appeal, while the R-Line package offered sportier styling elements. Inside, the minimalist design was visually pleasing but marred by subpar materials, with leather upholstery and contrast stitching failing to elevate the overall feel. The interior's dark colour scheme and flat-bottom steering wheel contributed to a less welcoming atmosphere.

In contrast, the 2022 Lexus GX maintained a classic design that harkened back to its first-generation model, with only the signature spindle grille and modern lighting distinguishing it from its predecessors. The cabin, however, showcased the legendary Lexus craftsmanship, with high-quality materials and a serene environment. The GX's interior was a testament to Lexus's commitment to refinement, offering a quiet ride with only the V8 engine's faint roar audible. Despite its dated design, the GX's interior quality and comfort were undeniable, providing a luxurious experience for its occupants.

Performance

2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport

5/10

2022 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered two powertrain options: a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine producing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and a 3.6-litre VR6 engine delivering 276 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The VR6 engine, in particular, provided a lively acceleration experience, although it lacked midrange power. The ride quality was less than ideal, with noticeable bumps and noise intrusion, and the handling was more akin to a truck than a sporty SUV. The VR6 model boasted a towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms, while the four-cylinder variant could tow up to 907 kilograms. The Cross Sport's AWD system included multiple drive modes and 20.3 centimetres of ground clearance, but it was not the best choice for off-road adventures.

The 2022 Lexus GX, with its 4.6-litre V8 engine, produced 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, allowing for a 7.8-second sprint to 60 mph. The six-speed automatic transmission and full-time 4WD system contributed to its off-road capabilities, with a towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms. Despite its high drag coefficient and hefty curb weight, the GX managed a fuel consumption rate of 14.0 L/100 km during testing. The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System enhanced stability and off-road performance, while the GX's ride and handling were refined for on-road comfort. However, the steering was slow and heavy, and the brake pedal was touchy, affecting the overall driving experience.

Form and function

2022 Lexus GX

2/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport offered competitive interior space for a two-row midsize crossover, with ample front-seat and rear-seat legroom. However, the sloping roofline compromised rear headroom. Cargo space was generous, with 1,141 litres available with the rear seats in place and 2,203 litres with them folded. The vehicle featured a variety of storage solutions, including a large centre console and a second-row armrest with integrated cupholders. Higher trims added a foot-activated tailgate for convenience.

The 2022 Lexus GX provided an elevated driving position and clear visibility, with comfortable seating and well-padded interiors. The Black Line Special Edition featured NuLuxe upholstery and black ash wood trim. The GX's third-row seat was challenging to access and offered limited space, impacting cargo capacity. With the third-row seat stowed, the GX offered 1,322 litres of cargo space, expanding to 1,833 litres with the second-row seat folded. The side-swinging tailgate posed challenges for loading, especially in tight spaces.

Technology

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport featured two infotainment systems, with the MIB3 system available on higher trims. This system included an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a 12-speaker Fender audio system. The Digital Cockpit display provided a customizable instrument cluster. However, the MIB3 system was slow to load, and the voice recognition required specific prompts. The analog controls were well-designed, making basic functions easy to access.

The 2022 Lexus GX introduced a new 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, eliminating the need for the outdated Remote Touch Interface. The system included Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and navigation, along with a CD player and Lexus Enform connected services. The dual-screen view allowed for simultaneous navigation and radio display. The voice recognition technology was quick and accurate, enhancing the user experience. The GX also featured Intuitive Parking Assist and optional surround-view cameras.

Safety

2022 Lexus GX

4/10

The 2021 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport received top "Good" scores in IIHS crash tests, with mixed headlight ratings. The NHTSA awarded it a five-star overall rating. Standard safety features included forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features included adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist. Unique to the Cross Sport were the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and Intelligent Crash Response System. New for 2021 were Travel Assist and Emergency Assist, offering advanced driver aids.

The 2022 Lexus GX lacked crash-test ratings but featured the Lexus Safety System+, which included adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Additional safety features included blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. However, the GX lacked some modern safety technologies found in competitors, such as lane-keeping assist and semi-autonomous driving systems. The absence of these features contributed to a more traditional driving experience.
