2022 Volvo XC40 Reviews Summary

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge AWD is an all-electric version of the XC40 subcompact crossover SUV. The Recharge was launched for the 2021 model year, so it doesn't get any significant changes for 2022. It comes with standard all-wheel drive (AWD; front-wheel drive is not offered in our market), and Natural Resources Canada says this plug-in electric vehicle can go up to 359 kilometres on a single charge. Is this the breakthrough EV we’ve been waiting for?

2023 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

Thanks to the rise of car-based crossovers, today’s SUVs with body-on-frame construction appeal to buyers with specific use-cases in mind: towing and driving off-road. Luxury SUVs like the 2023 Lexus GX appeal to an even narrower cross-section of buyers: those who want to tow or drive off-road and do in style and comfort. With a V8 engine as its trump card, the GX remains compelling amid its small pool of competition, but due to a combination of age and a lack of innovation, Lexus’s only real off-road SUV has fallen out of favour for anyone not enamoured by a V8 growl.

Look and feel

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2023 Lexus GX

7/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was a testament to Volvo's approach of easing traditional car owners into the electric vehicle (EV) world without drastic changes. From the exterior, it closely resembled its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, maintaining the same basic shape and structure. The most noticeable difference was the solid panel in the grill, replacing the airflow-dependent design of the gas version. Subtle details like the enlarged fuel-filler flap, trim-specific alloy wheels, and the absence of tailpipes distinguished it as an EV. Inside, the XC40 showcased Volvo's Scandinavian design sensibility, offering an airy and roomy cabin despite its compact SUV classification. The harmonious dash elements and premium finishes underscored its luxury status.

In contrast, the 2023 Lexus GX exuded a commanding presence with its massive spindle grille and significant ground clearance. The GX Black Line Special Edition, limited to 3,000 units, added exclusivity with its unique paint options. Despite its imposing front, the GX's dimensions seemed to shrink along the sides, emphasizing its off-road engineering. The interior, however, was a mix of luxury and practicality. While the use of plastic materials was a letdown for a luxury badge, features like heated and cooled seats and premium leather upholstery added a touch of opulence. The GX's design leaned towards a sleeker aesthetic compared to Toyota's blocky designs, making it easier to navigate technical terrains.

Performance

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was a powerhouse in the compact SUV segment, boasting a 78-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack that powered dual electric motors for all-wheel drive (AWD). With 402 horsepower and 486 pound-feet of torque, it accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds. The Recharge's regenerative braking system allowed for energy recapture, enhancing efficiency and offering a unique one-pedal driving experience. Its low centre of gravity, due to battery placement, contributed to its stable handling. The XC40 Recharge had a range of 359 kilometres on a full charge, with fast-charging capabilities that could replenish 80% of the battery in 40 minutes. Fuel efficiency for the gasoline models was respectable, with the T4 and T5 variants offering different performance levels.

The 2023 Lexus GX, on the other hand, was defined by its naturally aspirated 4.6-litre V8 engine, delivering 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque through a 6-speed automatic transmission. While it didn't excel on paper compared to modern engines, the V8's linear power delivery and satisfying sound were appealing to some. The GX's towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms was impressive, but its fuel economy was less so, with estimates of 16.2 L/100 km in the city and 12.3 on the highway. Despite its weight, the GX offered predictable handling, aided by its Torsen limited-slip differential and robust braking system. Its off-road capabilities were enhanced by a real 4WD system and various driving aids.

Form and function

2022 Volvo XC40

9/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge excelled in form and function, offering clever storage solutions and comfort features. The absence of a gasoline engine allowed for a front trunk, ideal for storing charging cables or small items. Inside, the cabin was equipped with ample storage spaces, including door pockets, map pockets, and USB ports for device connectivity. The front seats provided excellent comfort, while the rear seats were suitable for two passengers, with limited space for a third. The XC40 Recharge offered a cargo capacity of up to 1,628 litres with the rear seats folded and a towing capacity of 907 kilograms.

The 2023 Lexus GX provided practical storage options, with a deep centre console bin and convenient cupholders. The decision to retain hard buttons for controls was a welcome choice for those who preferred tactile interfaces. The adjustable centre console lid and comfortable second-row seating added to its practicality. However, the third row was cramped, suitable only for occasional use. The GX's cargo space was limited, with just 328 litres behind the rear seats, expanding to 1,832 litres with both rear rows folded. The side-hinged trunk door required effort to open, posing a challenge in tight spaces.

Technology

2022 Volvo XC40

8/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge was equipped with a suite of advanced technologies, including Pilot Assist for semi-autonomous driving and a heat pump to optimize climate control and extend range. The infotainment system featured a 9.3-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, running on the Android Automotive operating system. This allowed for seamless integration with Google services and over-the-air updates. However, the range display, showing only a percentage of charge, could induce range anxiety for some drivers.

The 2023 Lexus GX's infotainment system, updated in 2022, already felt dated compared to other Lexus models. The 10.3-inch touchscreen offered standard features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but the graphics and responsiveness lagged behind competitors. The inclusion of a CD player highlighted the system's outdated nature. However, the GX excelled in off-road technology, with a comprehensive 4WD system, Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, and various driving aids for challenging terrains.

Safety

2022 Volvo XC40

10/10

2023 Lexus GX

6/10

The 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge received the highest Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS, while the gasoline version earned a five-star rating from the NHTSA. Its extensive safety features included collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and a high-strength protective cage for the battery. The new sensor platform enhanced active safety features, and Volvo's Connected Safety system provided real-time hazard information sharing.

The 2023 Lexus GX, despite its older design, was equipped with the Lexus Safety System+ and other safety features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring. While it lacked some advanced features, its safety systems were significantly updated compared to its original 2010 design.
