What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The E-Class range is broad, and the cabin quality is strong even in lower trims, but some versions feel more richly equipped than others. You should pay close attention to how the car is optioned, since feature content can vary a lot.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes four engines, ranging from the base 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder to electrified inline-six powertrains and a high-output AMG V8. The four-cylinder is described as underwhelming, while the six-cylinder and AMG versions are much more compelling.
• Safety package: Forward automatic emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and blind-spot monitoring are standard. Other driver-assist features are optional, so you should confirm exactly which systems are fitted on the car you are considering.
• Infotainment: The 2021 update brings MBUX with touch, swipe, and voice control, plus dual 12-inch screens. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but they are not wireless, and the system does not update over the air.
• Fuel efficiency: The E350 4Matic sedan returns 9.4 L/100 km combined, while the E450 4Matic sedan returns 9.2 L/100 km combined. AMG models use more fuel, with the E53 sedan rated at 9.5 L/100 km combined and the E63 sedan at 12.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class trim should I buy?

The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is offered in 13 trim levels: E350, E450 4Matic, Mercedes-AMG E53, Mercedes-AMG E63 S, and the coupe, cabriolet, and wagon body-style variants referenced across the model range.

Here's the short version:

• E350: This is the most accessible entry point, but the 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder is described as underwhelming for a luxury car at this price. It makes sense if you want the E-Class experience at the lowest cost and can live without the stronger engines.
• E450 4Matic: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds the quieter, more satisfying electrified inline-six and keeps the E-Class character intact. If you want the sweet spot between comfort, performance, and everyday usability, this is the one to target.
• Mercedes-AMG E53: Choose this if you want a sharper, faster E-Class with brisk acceleration, rear-biased AWD, and a more performance-focused personality without jumping all the way to the top AMG model.
• Mercedes-AMG E63 S: This is the full-performance choice, with a hand-built 4.0-litre V8, 603 hp, and a much more extreme chassis setup. It suits you only if outright performance is the priority.

Forward automatic emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and blind-spot monitoring are standard, while other driver-assist features remain optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it rewards comparison shopping rather than impulse buying.

• Deal availability: 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 77 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 23.22% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $59,683 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class's resale value?

The current average of $59,683 CAD sits slightly below last year's $77,728 CAD.

That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the E-Class is currently trading in a softer pricing environment, so holding costs matter more than chasing short-term appreciation.

Because the model has strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal, well-kept examples should still attract interest from used buyers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class safe?

The 2021 E-Class sedan and wagon scored a five-star overall rating and five stars in frontal and side crash tests and for rollover vulnerability from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, the driver's side received a four-star rating in the frontal crash test versus the full five stars for 2020. The 2020 E-Class sedan was rated a "Top Safety Pick+" by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) with the highest ratings in six crash tests, headlights, and collision-avoidance systems.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Forward automatic emergency braking, a driver-attention monitor, and blind-spot monitoring are standard. Other driver-assist features are optional, so you should verify the equipment list on any used example you are considering.

Should I buy a 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 26.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 23.22% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2021 brings a meaningful infotainment, engine, and styling update.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $54,906 CAD, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $59,683 CAD average.
• It changes very little after the 2021 refresh.

The bottom line: If you want the most up-to-date version of this generation’s core formula, the 2021 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less and you do not need the latest refresh details, the 2022 is the more price-conscious alternative.

How does the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class compare to the 2021 BMW 5 Series?

Our experts score the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 8.3/10 and the 2021 BMW 5 Series 8/10. The E-Class is the more versatile and more richly appointed choice, while the 5 Series looks stronger on value in the used market. The Mercedes also brings a more luxurious cabin and a broader range of body styles and engines, but the BMW’s lower average used price and higher deal share may make it easier for you to shop.
