Reviews SummaryGiven the brand’s war-fighting origins, the idea of a luxury Jeep seems a bit oxymoronic. But premium SUVs that combine off-road capability with comfort and opulence are fairly common these days, and Jeep wants in on the action. Resurrecting a name that dates back to 1984, the 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is the automaker’s answer to the Cadillac Escalade, Infiniti QX80, and Lincoln Navigator. Like these rivals, the Wagoneer is a body-on-frame full-size SUV based on a more mainstream model. In this case, that’s the 2022 Wagoneer, which is also new for this model year (and is covered in a separate review). Jeep considers the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer to be components of a new sub-brand, sitting atop the rest of its lineup. In addition to the Wagoneer name and a basic platform, both models share exterior and interior styling and many tech features. So there’s less to differentiate a Grand Wagoneer from a Wagoneer than, say, a Lincoln Navigator from a Ford Expedition. The relationship might be more like that of the GMC Yukon to the Chevrolet Tahoe. To see if the Grand Wagoneer justifies its “grand” nomenclature, we drove it back to back with a standard Wagoneer, navigating city streets and off-road trails. The Grand Wagoneer launches in Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian trim levels. Our test vehicle was the midlevel Series II version.
Reviews SummaryBuick's three-row SUV gets a welcome freshening for the 2022 model year. Updates include new front and rear styling, new wheel designs, and exterior lighting enhancements. Inside, there's a new steering wheel, a restyled centre console with new shifter buttons, and revised seat trim. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto debut, and a new wireless phone charger is now available. But perhaps most importantly, the 2022 Enclave receives desperately needed standard driver-assistance and safety technology.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer, sharing its frame and body shell with the standard Wagoneer, presented a traditional SUV styling with a tall hood, broad shoulders, and an upright profile. It distinguished itself with a standard black roof, model-specific hood, front fascia, and grille, featuring laser-etched knurling. The Grand Wagoneer boasted a new body-on-frame architecture, allowing for independent suspension and weight-saving aluminum components. Inside, it shared design elements with the Wagoneer but offered more luxurious features like 24-way power front seats, Nappa leather upholstery, and American Walnut wood trim, enhancing its premium feel.
The 2022 Buick Enclave, historically known for its conservative styling, underwent a transformation over the years, embracing the SUV trend. The Enclave, a three-row crossover, received a mid-cycle refresh in 2022 with exterior enhancements like a new grille and wheel designs. Inside, it featured a restyled centre console with push-button gears and upgraded materials. The Avenir trim offered climate-controlled front seats and unique trim, providing a touch of luxury. The Enclave's spacious cabin accommodated passengers comfortably, with easy access to the third row, making it a practical choice for families.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer was powered by a 6.4-litre Hemi V8 engine, delivering 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, propelled the SUV from zero to 100 km/h in about six seconds. The Grand Wagoneer featured standard four-wheel drive with the Quadra-Drive II system, offering five drive modes and a height-adjustable Quadra-Lift air suspension. With a maximum towing capacity of 4,472 kilograms, it excelled in off-road capabilities, although its size limited its trail performance. The ride was smooth, but at higher speeds, it felt bouncy, and the steering was imprecise.
The 2022 Buick Enclave kept it simple with a 3.6-litre V6 engine producing 310 horsepower and 266 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Enclave's all-wheel-drive system provided a smooth and quiet ride, enhanced by the Avenir Technology package's premium ride suspension. Despite its size, the Enclave offered responsive acceleration and a pleasant engine sound. With a towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms, it handled various terrains well, although it wasn't designed for off-road adventures. The Enclave's cabin was serene, thanks to Buick's QuietTuning technology.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer offered seating for seven or eight, with ample third-row headroom and second-row legroom. It provided 775 litres of cargo space with all seats up and 2,007 litres with the third row stowed. The maximum cargo space was 2,667 litres, slightly less than some competitors. The Grand Wagoneer featured a standard sunroof, four-zone climate control, and large storage bins. Its towing capacity was 4,472 kilograms, slightly less than the standard Wagoneer due to its weight.
The 2022 Buick Enclave provided easy ingress and egress, with excellent visibility. It featured an eight-way power driver seat and six-way power front passenger seat, both heated. The Enclave's spacious cabin accommodated six adults comfortably, with easy access to the third row. The restyled centre console housed push-button transmission gears, and the Enclave offered ample cargo space, with 668 litres behind the third row, 1,634 litres with the third row folded, and 2,758 litres with both rows down. Power-folding third-row seats added convenience.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer featured a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, dual touchscreens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and a McIntosh audio system. Second-row passengers had a 10.25-inch touchscreen, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system added 10.1-inch screens. The Uconnect 5 infotainment system offered over-the-air updates, although the screen response was slow, and the graphics were plain.
The 2022 Buick Enclave came with a standard 4.2-inch driver information centre, with Premium and Avenir trims offering an 8-inch version. The Essence trim featured an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. The Enclave supported up to 10 devices, with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. The Premium and Avenir trims included a 10-speaker Bose audio system. Standard safety features included a following-distance indicator and HD rear vision camera, with additional features available on higher trims.
The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer lacked crash-test ratings from IIHS and NHTSA. Standard safety features included a 360-degree camera system, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and blind-spot monitoring. Optional features included intersection collision assist and driver-attention monitor. The Active Lane Management System combined adaptive cruise control with lane centring.
The 2022 Buick Enclave made the Buick Driver Confidence Plus package standard, including automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, and lane-change alert. Premium trim added enhanced automatic emergency braking and adaptive cruise control. The NHTSA gave the Enclave a five-star overall safety rating, while the IIHS rated it "Good" in most crash tests, with an "Acceptable" score in the updated side-impact test.
