2023 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

Every car shopper out there has a hierarchy of needs. They put some needs above other needs. Whether you are looking for the best fuel economy, the most cargo space, or the newest tech and safety features, certain vehicles excel in some areas or fall behind in others. The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder does not stand out courtesy of any one particular characteristic, but much like the people shopping for it, the Pathfinder is a combination of attributes in one vehicle.

For the 2023 model year, Nissan has introduced the Rock Creek edition. It’s a more rugged version of the Pathfinder. That’s a bit ironic because, like many entrants in this family-hauling segment, the Pathfinder started out decades ago as tough, truck-based SUVs. So while the Pathfinder has evolved into a more comfortable vehicle, the Rock Creek appears to be an attempt to capture the spirit of the early Nissan SUVs. So, how does the Pathfinder stack up within the popular and hotly contested midsize SUV segment? And does the Rock Creek warrant attention as an off-road vehicle?

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

Look and feel

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

8/10

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder carried over its design from the 2022 model, maintaining its modern yet traditional aesthetic. Its futuristic headlights and angular C-pillar gave it a contemporary look that was expected to remain relevant for years. Inside, the cabin featured clean lines and a sensible layout, making it both visually appealing and practical for everyday use. The Pathfinder offered various trims in Canada, each with distinct features, from the base S trim with AWD and heated seats to the top-tier Platinum with advanced tech and luxury touches.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80 exuded luxury with its stylish exterior colours and 22-inch wheel designs. The Prestige trim offered diamond-stitched Nappa leather, a suede headliner, and metallic accents, enhancing its premium feel. The interior boasted ambient lighting, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and a wide touchscreen display, reinforcing its status as a flagship SUV. Despite its luxurious appeal, the GV80's Prestige Signature trim was not available in Canada, suggesting that the regular Prestige trim was a more practical choice for Canadian consumers.

Performance

2023 Nissan Pathfinder

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 284 horsepower and 259 pound-feet of torque. The Rock Creek variant offered a slight power boost to 295 hp and 270 lb-ft. All models featured a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard AWD, though Nissan's 4WD label was more marketing than reality. The Rock Creek's off-road suspension and tires provided enhanced trail capability but resulted in a rougher on-road ride. The Pathfinder's towing capacity varied, with the Rock Creek capable of towing up to 2,720 kilograms.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered two engine options: a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 producing 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. Both engines paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The GV80's driving modes included Eco, Comfort, Sport, Custom, and Snow, with the 3.5T featuring upgraded brakes and adaptive suspension. The GV80 excelled in performance, offering swift acceleration and a sporty feel, though it was less fuel-efficient than expected.

Form and function

9/10

2024 Genesis GV80

5/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder provided up to 2,279 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded, and 470 litres with all seats upright. It offered ample headroom and legroom in the first two rows, while the third row was suitable for short trips. The Platinum trim's captain's chairs and numerous cupholders added convenience. The Rock Creek's roof racks were practical for cargo but posed challenges for snow removal.

The 2024 Genesis GV80, particularly the 3.5T Prestige, offered a third-row seat. It featured luxurious materials like Nappa leather and included amenities such as heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a power liftgate. However, the seats were less comfortable for long trips, and second-row legroom was limited. The GV80 provided 988 litres of cargo space behind the second row, expanding to 2,378 litres with seats folded.

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder came with an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, with larger screens available on higher trims. It supported Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though some found the graphics dated. The Pathfinder included multiple USB ports, Bluetooth, and a Wi-Fi hotspot, ensuring connectivity despite lacking cutting-edge tech.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, controlled via a centre console dial. It included navigation, SiriusXM, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Prestige trim offered a 12.3-inch digital instrument display and a Lexicon sound system. The GV80's digital key system and head-up display added modern convenience and safety.

Safety

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and ProPilot Assist. The SL trim added traffic-sign recognition, while the Platinum included rain-sensing wipers. The Pathfinder earned a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered advanced safety features like a Blind-Spot View Monitor and Highway Driving Assist. The GV80's ADAS systems provided a sophisticated driving experience, though HDA was less effective in heavy traffic. The GV80 also featured Remote Smart Parking Assist. It received a Top Safety Pick+ from the IIHS and a five-star overall rating from the NHTSA.
