The 2022 Toyota Sequoia, a continuation of its second generation, showcased a mature design that had remained largely unchanged since 2008. Its exterior maintained a classic appeal with a modest grille and elegant wheel arches, avoiding the oversized trends seen in other SUVs. The Sequoia's dimensions were substantial, offering a commanding presence with a height of 1,956 mm, width of 2,030 mm, and length of 5,210 mm. Inside, however, the Sequoia's age was evident. The interior design felt dated, with a 7-inch touchscreen that seemed out of place compared to the larger screens in modern SUVs. Despite this, the build quality was typical of Toyota, with high-quality materials and a durable feel.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille. The exterior was elegant, especially in the matte Brunswick Green paint. The interior continued this theme with quilted leather seats and a dash split by thin air vents, complemented by metal and matte wood trim. The centre console featured three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes. The 14.5-inch infotainment screen, though slightly awkwardly placed, added to the luxurious feel. The GV80's interior was spacious and offered a high level of comfort and luxury.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia was powered by a 5.7-litre i-Force V8 engine, producing 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. This engine was paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a lockable Torsen limited-slip centre differential. The Sequoia's truck roots provided a payload capacity of up to 608 kilograms and a towing capacity of 3,221 kilograms. Despite its weight of around 2,721.5 kilograms, the Sequoia offered a smooth and stable ride, with excellent off-road capabilities thanks to its body-on-frame construction and four-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6. Our tester featured the V6, delivering 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. While not the quickest in its class, the GV80 excelled in highway driving with smooth power delivery and an electronically controlled suspension that adjusted to road conditions. The active noise cancellation further enhanced the driving experience, making it a quiet and comfortable ride.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia prioritized passenger comfort with spacious seating across all three rows. It featured three-zone climate control and a standard power moonroof. The cargo space was impressive, with 535 litres behind the third row, expanding to 3,401 litres with the second and third rows folded. The Sequoia was well-suited for families needing ample space and utility.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered luxury and comfort with heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and a tri-zone climate control system. The interior featured Nappa leather seats and an Ergo driver’s seat to reduce fatigue. While the optional third row was cramped, the GV80 excelled in cargo space, offering 988 litres behind the second row and 2,378 litres with seats folded. The GV80 also had a towing capacity of 2,720 kilograms.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia's technology felt outdated, with a 7-inch touchscreen and a 4.2-inch TFT driver information screen. While Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, the system lacked the modern features found in competitors. The Sequoia did include a 14-speaker JBL audio system in higher trims and standard LED lighting.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. While the infotainment system had a learning curve, it offered Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, albeit not wirelessly.
