2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid isn't particularly attractive, sporty, or luxurious. Compared to the performance and refinement of the best three-row SUVs, it's middling at best. The best selling points are its excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing, and in this manner, its nearly unequaled.

2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available in Canada with Advanced or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. Its technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

Look and feel

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid borrowed styling cues from Toyota's Tacoma, featuring a trapezoidal grille and upright fascia that gave it a rugged look. However, its side profile introduced a softer character line, reminiscent of the Toyota Supra and Sienna, which added unnecessary visual weight. The rear echoed the front's trapezoidal theme, but the overall design felt disjointed compared to more cohesive competitors like the Kia Telluride and Honda Pilot. Inside, the Highlander Hybrid's asymmetrical dash was interrupted by a metallic element, creating a storage tray and breaking monotony. The Bronze Edition featured unique 18-inch bronze wheels and light grey fabric upholstery with a triangle motif, which seemed impractical for families due to its tendency to attract dirt.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, presenting a stately appearance. The Prestige trim tester featured 22-inch alloy wheels and a matte Brunswick Green paint job, enhancing its elegance. Inside, the dark green quilted leather seats complemented the dash's thin air vents and matte wood trim. The centre console housed three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes. While the 14.5-inch infotainment screen seemed awkwardly placed, the interior was spacious and luxurious, offering a pleasant environment.

Performance

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and hybrid system, producing 243 horsepower. It featured a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and standard all-wheel drive, with an electric motor powering the rear axle. It reached 100 km/h in just over eight seconds, slightly slower than gasoline-only SUVs. The hybrid powertrain provided a quick but tepid initial response, with the gasoline engine supplying more power. The CVT's uninspired drone was noticeable during acceleration, especially uphill. The ride was soft, with the suspension smoothing bumps, and the cabin remained quiet on highways.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 offered standard all-wheel drive with a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6. The V6 delivered 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Although not particularly quick, taking about five and a half seconds to reach 100 km/h, the GV80 excelled at highway driving. Its electronically controlled suspension and active noise cancellation ensured a smooth and quiet ride, despite its less athletic handling compared to German rivals.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's front seats were well-cushioned, with ample adjustments for drivers. Storage was plentiful, with trays and bins for personal items. The second-row seats offered generous space and versatility, with sliding and reclining captain’s chairs. The third row was less accommodating, suitable for children or short trips. Cargo space behind the third row was 453 litres, expanding to 1,370 litres with seats folded, and 2,387 litres at maximum capacity.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 boasted luxury features like heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel, and Nappa leather upholstery. The Ergo driver’s seat reduced fatigue with inflatable pockets. A third row was optional but cramped. The GV80 featured Genesis puddle lamps, a digital key, and tri-zone climate control. Cargo space was substantial, with 988 litres behind the second row, expanding to 2,378 litres with seats down. Towing capacity was 2,720 kilograms.

Technology

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid included an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch option on top trims. The system was responsive, with physical shortcut buttons and climate controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard, with wireless charging on higher trims. Navigation and a JBL audio system were available on Limited and Platinum trims.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. The infotainment system had a learning curve, with a dial for navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were included, though not wireless. The GV80 offered wireless charging, multiple USB ports, and remote smart parking assist, allowing the car to park itself via the key fob.

Safety

9/10

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid received a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and was a Top Safety Pick+ by IIHS. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane-keep assist. The systems generally worked well but needed fine-tuning, particularly the adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 was equipped with advanced driver aids, including forward collision warning and blind-spot monitoring. The Blind-Spot View Monitor displayed video feeds in the gauge cluster. Highway Drive Assist used cameras and radar for hands-on driving aid. The GV80 received a five-star overall rating from NHTSA and high ratings from IIHS, though headlights and LATCH received Acceptable ratings.
