2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews SummaryThe definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact SUV like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must. Competitors include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Acura RDX, Porsche Macan, and others. The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is for the Korean automaker as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.
2024 BMW X5 Reviews SummaryOur test vehicle for this review was the X5 xDrive50e, the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) version of the X5 midsize SUV, but it’s just one of several X5 models you can buy. The xDrive40i features a satisfying turbocharged six-cylinder engine (with electric assist in the plug-in hybrid), while the M60i features a turbocharged V8 engine. Maximum performance is available in the comically fun X5 M Competition. Drive any of them, though, and it’s easy to understand why the X5 is one of BMW’s best-selling models. Verdict: Newer BMWs are losing what has always made this automaker’s cars and SUVs appealing to people who like to drive. Fortunately, the 2024 BMW X5 hasn’t succumbed to the trend. In xDrive50e specification, it remains a delight to drive while supplying about 63 kilometres of electric-only range before its gasoline-fueled turbo six turns on.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 showcased a design that cleverly connected it to the G70 compact luxury sedan, particularly above the belt-line. Its split-bar headlights and a distinctive chrome line that curved from behind the rear window were notable features, giving it a coupe-like SUV appearance without sacrificing versatility. Inside, the GV70 impressed with its luxurious cabin, featuring top-notch materials and a blend of contemporary and classic aesthetics. The dashboard integrated a full touchscreen with a rotary dial and button controls, offering a user-friendly experience.
In contrast, the 2024 BMW X5, last redesigned in 2019, maintained a timeless style, though the M Sport treatment was less appealing to some. The test vehicle featured optional 21-inch wheels, enhancing its appearance. The X5's interior received a modern update with the BMW Curved Display, reducing physical controls while retaining high-quality materials. Despite these changes, the X5 remained tied to its roots, offering a blend of modern and traditional BMW elements.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered two gas-powered engines: a 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 producing 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and AWD. The GV70 balanced comfort and handling, providing a refined driving experience. The Electrified GV70 featured a 77.4-kWh battery, dual motors with 429 horsepower, and a range of 383 kilometres. It included a Boost Mode for short bursts of 483 horsepower.
The 2024 BMW X5 introduced new mild-hybrid engines and an upgraded PHEV system. The xDrive50e PHEV offered 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a 63-kilometre electric range. It accelerated to 96 km/h in 4.6 seconds. The PHEV excelled in efficiency, achieving 6.0 L/100 km during testing. The adaptive damping air suspension and quick steering enhanced its driving dynamics, making it enjoyable in various conditions.
The Genesis GV70 provided 1,611 litres of cargo space with rear seats folded and 818 litres with them in use. It featured a hands-free power liftgate and practical interior storage solutions. Front seats were comfortable, but rear legroom was tighter, requiring adjustments for taller passengers.
The BMW X5 offered more space, with 937 litres of cargo capacity expanding to 2,016 litres with seats down. Its split liftgate design added convenience but required stretching to access deep cargo. The X5's interior featured standard Sensafin artificial leather, with optional 20-way power-adjustable seats and a panoramic sunroof. Rear passengers enjoyed comfort and visibility, though a third-row seat was no longer available.
The Genesis GV70 came with a 14.5-inch touchscreen, navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. It included four USB ports, wireless charging, and an optional Lexicon 18-speaker audio system. The interface was user-friendly, though the proximity of the rotary dial to the shifter could cause confusion.
The BMW X5 featured a BMW Curved Display with a 12.3-inch digital panel and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. It ran on BMW Operating System 8.5, offering wireless connectivity, SiriusXM, and over-the-air updates. The Intelligent Personal Assistant had limitations, struggling with voice recognition tasks. However, the head-up display and augmented video navigation were highlights.
The Genesis GV70 included a comprehensive suite of safety features, such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. It received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.
The BMW X5 offered Highway Assistant for hands-free driving, though it required deliberate activation. It performed well in specific conditions but had occasional braking issues. The X5 received high ratings from the IIHS but missed an award due to headlight ratings. The NHTSA gave it a four-star overall rating.
