2023 Lexus RX Hybrid Reviews Summary

Since the redesigned 2023 Lexus RX mid-size crossover went on sale toward the end of 2022, the automaker has filled out its electrified line-up with three hybrid models: the RX 350h, RX 450h+ PHEV, and the RX 500h F Sport Performance. Based on time spent driving two of these three new 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid models, we expect them to at least double, if not triple, the previous-generation RX 450h’s share of sales.

2024 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

Genesis introduced the GV80 in 2021, and the crossover SUV is getting a minor refresh in 2025. Still, the 2024 GV80 remains a good choice unless you want to wait for the fancier styling, more high-tech interior, or new supercharged GV80 Coupe coming next year. Otherwise, today’s GV80 is pretty much the same as tomorrow’s GV80, and in some respects, it is the more elegant and traditional choice.

Verdict: Based on our evaluation of the 2024 Genesis GV80, seat comfort is not what it should be. Also, to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you need a USB cable. This Genesis is thirsty, too. But otherwise, we have few complaints about this stylish, safe, and mostly rewarding midsize luxury SUV.

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

8/10

2024 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid was a blend of subtlety and sportiness. In Santa Barbara, California, the RX 350h Luxury model, with its Iridium silver finish and 21-inch alloy wheels, appeared almost indistinguishable from its non-hybrid counterpart, save for the badge on the liftgate. The RX 500h F Sport Performance, however, stood out with its Copper paint, blacked-out grille, and aggressive styling, embodying a performance-oriented aesthetic. Despite its popularity, the RX's design was not universally praised, with its front-heavy appearance and signature rear roof pillar design making it look smaller than its predecessor. Inside, the RX embraced a minimalist approach, featuring a new infotainment system and contemporary textures, with the RX 350h Luxury offering luxurious Macadamia leather and Ash Bamboo wood trim, while the RX 500h F Sport Performance opted for a darker, sportier interior.

In contrast, the 2024 Genesis GV80 exuded luxury and sophistication. The Prestige trim offered six exterior colours and stylish 22-inch wheels, while the interior boasted diamond-stitched Nappa leather, a suede headliner, and metallic accents. Ambient lighting, a 3D digital instrument cluster, and a wide touchscreen display further emphasized its flagship status. The GV80's design left no doubt about its luxury credentials, though the Prestige Signature trim available in the U.S. was deemed unnecessary for Canadian buyers. The GV80's interior was opulent, but the seats, despite their premium materials, were criticized for comfort during long drives, with the diamond-stitched surfaces feeling like bubble wrap.

Performance

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

8/10

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid offered two distinct hybrid powertrains. The RX 350h featured a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine paired with a hybrid system, producing 246 hp and 233 lb-ft of torque. It was expected to average 6.5 L/100 km in combined driving, though real-world testing showed 7.4 L/100 km. The RX 500h F Sport Performance, on the other hand, boasted a turbocharged 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, delivering 366 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. It accelerated to 100 km/h in about 6 seconds but consumed 11.3 L/100 km in combined driving, higher than the estimated 8.6 L/100 km. The RX 500h's adaptive damping suspension and Dynamic Rear Steering system provided a sporty driving experience, though accessing drive modes required navigating the infotainment system.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered two engine options: a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, and a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 with 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. The latter, while powerful, was thirsty, with observed fuel consumption of 13.7 L/100 km compared to the estimated 10.5 L/100 km. Both engines were paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The GV80's driving experience was rewarding, with swift acceleration and commendable grip from its all-season tires. The adaptive damping suspension and larger front brakes enhanced its athleticism, though the steering was unremarkable.

Form and function

2023 Lexus RX Hybrid

7/10

2024 Genesis GV80

5/10

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid prioritized comfort and practicality. The RX 350h Luxury trim featured ten-way power-adjustable front seats with premium leather, while the RX 500h F Sport Performance offered eight-way power adjustment with standard-grade leather. Both models had heated and ventilated front seats and effective climate control systems. The RX's battery placement under the rear seat provided excellent leg support but compromised rear headroom. Cargo space was generous, with 838 litres behind the rear seat and 1,308 litres with the seats folded, a significant improvement over the previous model.

The 2024 Genesis GV80, particularly in the 3.5T Prestige trim, offered a third-row seat and a host of standard features, including heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and a power hands-free liftgate. However, the seats were criticized for comfort, with the diamond-stitched surfaces feeling like bubble wrap. Rear seats offered limited legroom, though cargo space was ample, with 988 litres behind the second row and 2,378 litres with the seats folded.

Technology

2024 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid introduced a new infotainment system, a significant upgrade that required subscription services for full functionality. The system supported wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, with a cloud-based navigation system and Intelligent Assistant available through Drive Connect. However, the system's single-screen menu and lack of a tuning knob were drawbacks. The available head-up display, while useful, was problematic with polarized sunglasses.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 featured a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment display, though its placement encouraged the use of a control dial. The infotainment package included navigation, SiriusXM, and wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The GV80's digital key system and Lexicon premium sound system added to its technological appeal. The head-up display was standard in Canada, providing blind-spot warnings and other useful information.

The 2023 Lexus RX Hybrid came equipped with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, featuring advanced driver assistance systems like motorcycle detection, evasive steering assistance, and intersection turn assistance. Proactive Driving Assist and Traffic Jam Assist were also available, though some features, like the curve-speed reduction tech, were criticized for being reactive.

The 2024 Genesis GV80 offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including a Blind-Spot View Monitor, Remote Smart Parking Assist, and Highway Driving Assist. The GV80 received top safety ratings from both the IIHS and NHTSA, providing peace of mind for drivers.
