2022 Kia Sportage Reviews Summary

The 2022 Kia Sportage is a stylish, sophisticated, safe, and–with its available turbocharged engine–speedy SUV. Kia hasn't redesigned it since 2017, but that doesn't mean you should cross it off of your shopping list. Even the technology is up to date.

Compact in size, the 2022 Sportage comes in LX, LX Nightsky, EX, EX Premium S, and SX trim levels with front- or all-wheel drive. LX Nightsky trim is new, replacing the LX S version for 2022. The Sportage EX gains a standard panoramic sunroof for 2022.

In Canada, MSRP ranges from $25,995 to $40,195, plus a destination charge of $1,850. Our test vehicle for this review was an SX, which comes with the turbocharged engine and standard AWD and was also equipped with a cargo mat and a tow hitch. The sticker price came to $42,746, including destination (Canadian, estimated). (A U.S. model is shown; the exterior colour on the test unit is not available in Canada, where the SX comes only with red, white, grey, or black paint.)

2023 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

The definition of luxury has changed. No matter where you look in the various premium vehicle segments, there are entrants that you may not have seen decades ago. From performance SUVs to subcompact crossovers, there are new takes on upscale vehicles. But just as crucially is the entrance of new players. In 2015, the Genesis brand was officially spun off from Hyundai. And with the brand’s expansion into various segments, a compact SUV like the 2023 Genesis GV70 was a must. Competitors include the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC, Acura RDX, Porsche Macan, and others.

The GV70 was introduced for the 2022 model year and for 2023, an all-electric model joins the lineup. We evaluated the GV70 on the whole, but with a special focus on how effective the 2023 Genesis GV70 Electrified is for the Korean automaker as an EV and as a compact luxury crossover.

Look and feel

2022 Kia Sportage

9/10

2023 Genesis GV70

8/10

The 2022 Kia Sportage presented a mixed bag in terms of design. While Kia's signature tiger-nose grille was a hit on models like the Stinger and Sorento, it seemed out of place on the Sportage, resembling a Halloween party fake mustache. Despite this, the Sportage excelled in other design aspects, with its four-dot running light signature reminiscent of the Porsche Macan and a Volkswagen-style symmetry in the rear. The SX trim's 19-inch alloy wheels added to its stylish and planted stance. Inside, the Sportage boasted a Germanic design with a black dashboard, polished metallic accents, and straightforward instrumentation. The use of buttons and knobs made it user-friendly, enhancing the upscale feel of the SUV.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV70 exuded luxury and sophistication. Its design drew inspiration from the G70 compact luxury sedan, with split-bar headlights and a strong chrome line that hinted at a coupe-like SUV without sacrificing versatility. The GV70's interior was a testament to Genesis's luxury credentials, featuring top-notch materials and impeccable fit and finish. The cabin's aesthetic was both contemporary and classic, with climate controls integrated into a curving bezel and a touchscreen that seamlessly rose from the dash. The GV70's dash included a full touchscreen, rotary dial, and button controls, offering a superior user experience compared to touch capacitive controls. The GV70 was available in various trims, each offering a range of luxurious features, from power-adjustable seats to advanced audio systems and smart parking assist.

Performance

2022 Kia Sportage

2023 Genesis GV70

7/10

The 2022 Kia Sportage offered a choice between a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque, and a more robust 2.0-litre turbocharged engine in the SX trim, delivering 237 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and the Dynamax all-wheel-drive system was standard on all but the base model. The Sportage SX provided quick acceleration, with maximum torque available from 1,450 to 3,500 rpm, giving it a lively character, especially in Sport mode. The suspension setup offered a smooth ride, though it exhibited some body roll and lateral rocking. While fun to drive, the Sportage SX lacked the refinement of competitors like the Mazda CX-5 Turbo.

The 2023 Genesis GV70, on the other hand, offered a more powerful performance with its turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. The 3.5T variant featured a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6 engine with 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines were mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission with all-wheel drive. The GV70's performance was well-rounded, blending comfort and sharp handling. The Electrified GV70, with its 77.4-kWh battery and dual electric motors, delivered 429 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, with a Boost Mode increasing output to 483 horsepower. It offered a range of 383 kilometres and featured DC fast charging capabilities. The GV70's handling was refined, leaning slightly towards comfort, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a luxury SUV with impressive performance.

Form and function

2022 Kia Sportage

2023 Genesis GV70

6/10

The 2022 Kia Sportage, despite being on the smaller side of the compact crossover segment, offered a spacious passenger compartment. The SX trim featured perforated leather upholstery with power-adjustable front seats, heated and ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Rear passengers enjoyed generous legroom, air conditioning vents, and USB charging ports, with heated rear seats on the SX trim. The Sportage provided 1,703 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded, though it fell short of segment leaders. The smart liftgate technology added convenience, though it could be turned off if not needed.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 offered 1,611 litres of cargo space with the rear seats folded, which was average for its class. With the rear seats in use, it provided 818 litres, above average for a compact luxury SUV. The GV70 featured a hands-free power liftgate and ample interior storage, though rear legroom was tighter, requiring front-row occupants to adjust their seats. The rear bench reclined for added comfort, making it a practical choice for luxury SUV buyers.

2023 Genesis GV70

The 2022 Kia Sportage came equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The SX trim added UVO Intelligence connected services, satellite radio, wireless smartphone charging, and an 8-speaker Harman Kardon audio system. While the infotainment system was user-friendly, it lacked advanced features like a Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless smartphone mirroring.

In contrast, the 2023 Genesis GV70 boasted a 14.5-inch touchscreen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. The system was intuitive, with large icons and logical menu navigation. The GV70 also featured a rotary dial and helpful buttons in the centre console, though the proximity to the rotary shifter could cause confusion. The GV70 offered four USB ports, wireless charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and an available Lexicon 18-speaker audio system, providing a superior technological experience.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 provided a comprehensive suite of safety features, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and highway driving assist.
