2022 Genesis GV70 Reviews Summary

Have you heard of Genesis, the luxury off-shoot brand created by Hyundai Motor Group a little more than five years ago? Those who follow the automotive industry may be aware of the brand’s intentionally disruptive character. But it’s not a surprise if the name is new to you: Genesis launched somewhat quietly with a line-up of sedans including the Genesis G70 and Genesis G80, initially lacking in the luxury SUV options Canadian buyers crave. Now, those are starting to arrive, first with the mid-size Genesis GV80 launched last year, and now the new GV70, a compact two-row SUV that casually drops into Canada’s most competitive luxury segment. Genesis says it expects this vehicle to double its Canadian sales—and it might achieve that goal, provided it can get the attention of Canadians in a segment already overflowing with stiff competition.

2023 Lincoln Aviator Reviews Summary

There is a reason that Ford’s Lincoln luxury division emphasizes the ethos of “Quiet Flight” when discussing its products, and our 2023 Aviator Grand Touring proved itself the epitome of this concept. It quietly glides everywhere you go, swaddling you in comfort, luxury, and high-tech features. And Lincoln hasn’t altered this formula for the new model year. (Note the unit shown in this review is in US specification with Black Label packaging, which is not available in Canada.)

Look and feel

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Lincoln Aviator

8/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 stood out with its distinctive styling, diverging from the rest of the brand’s lineup. It featured the brand’s signature two-line lighting, creating an illusion of a circle around the vehicle. The GV70’s design included unique elements like a sculpted hood on the Sport grades and a distinct shoulder line. Dark chrome finishes and cross-hatched patterns on the Sport grades emphasized its sporty intent. Customers could choose from over 100 colour combinations, with exclusive options for certain trims. Inside, the GV70 boasted an elliptical theme inspired by airplane wings, with premium materials like quilted leather and carbon fibre inserts.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator presented an appealing three-row design with a modern Lincoln face and grille. However, the wheel designs on the Grand Touring model were considered plain. The Aviator featured an inviting lighting sequence and electric door handles, enhancing its luxurious feel. Inside, it offered a mix of high-end materials, including leather and a suede headliner. Despite its fancy interior, some chrome details felt cheap. The Aviator’s key fob was lightweight and plasticky, but the optional Phone As A Key technology provided a modern alternative.

Performance

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2023 Lincoln Aviator

7/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 offered two engine options. The 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder produced 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 delivered 375 hp and 391 lb-ft. The GV70 featured an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard all-wheel drive, prioritizing the rear axle. It included drive modes like Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport+, with the latter offering aggressive performance. The electronically controlled suspension provided a balance between comfort and handling, and the GV70’s tight turning radius was advantageous in urban settings.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring, a plug-in hybrid, combined a twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor, producing 494 hp and 630 lb-ft of torque. It offered 34 km of electric range and averaged 10.3 L/100 km in hybrid mode. The Aviator featured multiple drive modes, including Pure EV and Preserve EV. During testing, it achieved impressive fuel economy with a mix of electric and gas power. The Aviator’s handling was smooth, but its steering felt heavy and numb. The Dynamic Handling Package improved suspension, but the Aviator lacked the fun-to-drive factor.

Form and function

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Lincoln Aviator

7/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 prioritized driver-focused design with a tall centre console and intuitive controls. It featured standard heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, with options for ventilated seats. Rear passengers enjoyed a panoramic sunroof and adjustable legroom. Cargo space was generous, with 819 litres behind the second row and 1,610 litres with seats folded. The GV70’s ergonomics were above average, though some steering wheel functions required adjustment.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator emphasized comfort with features like a four-zone climate control system and massaging front seats. The second-row captain’s chairs were spacious, but the third row was cramped for adults. Cargo space was limited with the third row in use, offering 519 litres, but expanded to 2,200 litres with seats folded. The Aviator’s interior was luxurious, but the third row’s usability was a drawback.

Technology

2022 Genesis GV70

9/10

2023 Lincoln Aviator

6/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 impressed with its 14.5-inch infotainment screen, offering high-resolution graphics and split-screen functionality. It included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, though not wirelessly. The 3D digital instrument cluster and fingerprint recognition system added modern touches. A premium Lexicon audio system was available on top trims, enhancing the in-car experience.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator featured a 10.1-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but ran on outdated Sync 3 software. Voice recognition was inconsistent, leading to navigation issues. The 28-speaker Revel Ultima 3D audio system provided exceptional sound quality. Smartphone integration included wireless charging and Phone As A Key technology. The head-up display was effective, even with polarized sunglasses.

Safety

2022 Genesis GV70

8/10

2023 Lincoln Aviator

8/10

The 2022 Genesis GV70 came with ten standard safety features, including blind spot collision avoidance and lane-keeping assist. The Highway Driving Assist system offered lane centring and automatic lane changing. A new rear occupant alert system used radar to detect movement. Safety ratings were not available at the time of publication.

The 2023 Lincoln Aviator included a comprehensive suite of safety features, such as adaptive cruise control and pedestrian detection. The evasive steering assist added stability during sudden maneuvers. The lane-keeping system had some issues in curves, but overall, the driver aids performed well. The Aviator received a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS and a five-star rating from the NHTSA.
