2022 BMW X3 Reviews SummarySince its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only manufacturing facility north of the Mexican border. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that. Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Updates include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features. (Interestingly, while the BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup in the United States, it continues in 2022 in Canada. This model is not covered in this review.)
2023 Jeep Wrangler Reviews SummaryThe Jeep Wrangler’s roots go all the way back to World War II and the Willys-Overland company. Fast-forward some 60 years or so and we have the iconic Jeep Wrangler JL, one of the last body-on-frame SUVs left for folks who prioritize off-road capability over creature comforts. Every Wrangler comes with solid front and rear axles and a five-link suspension system. However, some popular trim levels, like the Wrangler Sport, Wrangler Willys Sport, and Wrangler Sahara, don’t get locking differentials or meaty tires, so choose your Wrangler carefully.

The 2022 BMW X3 presented a refined and slightly aggressive exterior design, with a larger kidney grille and adaptive full LED headlights that were slimmer by a centimetre. The rear featured new taillights with a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs, adding a modern touch. The updated rear included larger exhaust tips and a new bumper, complemented by an M Sport Package for xDrive30i models, offering a sportier look. The interior was clean and efficient, with options for wood trim, power-adjustable front seats, and a panoramic moonroof. The X3 offered a variety of interior colour choices and ambient lighting, enhancing the overall driving experience.
In contrast, the 2023 Jeep Wrangler maintained its rugged, no-nonsense design with a boxy shape and iconic seven-slot grille. The Wrangler offered both two-door and four-door models, with the option to remove doors and fold down the windshield for an open-air experience. The rear tailgate swung out, and the rear glass lifted for easy cargo access. The interior was practical, with easy-to-clean materials and a body-coloured dash. While lacking in ambient lighting and luxury features, the Wrangler focused on functionality, with a straightforward design and optional cold-weather package for added comfort.

The 2022 BMW X3 featured an eight-speed automatic transmission across all models, with the xDrive30i powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. It accelerated from zero to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The M40i variant boasted a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, delivering 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, achieving zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. The M40i offered a more dynamic driving experience with a sportier exhaust, adaptive suspension, and rear-oriented torque split, while the mild-hybrid system provided smoother start/stop operations.
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler offered a range of engine options, including a standard Pentastar V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The Wrangler Rubicon 392 featured a 6.4-litre V8 engine with 470 horsepower and torque, capable of accelerating from zero to 100 km/h in approximately 4.5 seconds. The Wrangler excelled off-road with solid axles, optional differential lockers, and various transfer cases, while the 392 model offered impressive power but lacked in braking and steering precision. The Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid provided an eco-friendly option with 35 kilometres of all-electric range.
The 2022 BMW X3 offered a spacious interior with seating for five, though the rear middle seat was best suited for smaller passengers. The rear seats featured a 40/20/40-split, providing ample cargo space for luggage and equipment. The SensaTec faux-leather seats were comfortable, with the option to upgrade to Vernasca leather for added luxury. The X3's redesigned centre console and larger infotainment system improved ergonomics and accessibility, while the power tailgate and optional hands-free opening added convenience.
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's front seats were comfortable, with optional heated seats in higher trims or with a cold-weather package. The rear seat was tight, especially in the four-door models, and the small rear doors made access challenging. Storage for small items was limited, with a flat dash and small glove box and centre console. The Wrangler offered various top options for open-air driving, including a Sky One-Touch power soft top for quick access to fresh air. The cargo space was limited compared to competitors, but the Wrangler provided ample charging points throughout the cabin.
The 2022 BMW X3 came equipped with BMW Live Cockpit Plus featuring iDrive 7 telematics, a 5.1-inch colour display instrument panel, and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen. The system included navigation, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and various connected digital features. An optional Live Cockpit Professional offered larger screens and a fully digital experience. The X3's standard sound system could be upgraded to a Harman Kardon surround sound system, and additional tech options included keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, and a head-up display.
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler featured a standard 7-inch touchscreen with the Uconnect infotainment system, while our tester had the larger 8.4-inch screen. The system included Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto connectivity, with off-road pages providing detailed information for adventurous drivers. The Wrangler offered practical tech features like a forward-facing camera and auxiliary switches for aftermarket accessories, but lacked advanced digital keys or over-the-air updates for vehicle performance.
The 2022 BMW X3 received a five-star crash safety rating from the NHTSA and offered a comprehensive suite of safety features, including adaptive LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active blind-spot monitoring. Optional features included parking assistance, traffic jam assistance, and active lane-keep assist, enhancing the X3's safety profile.
The 2023 Jeep Wrangler's standard safety features were limited to a rearview camera, electronic roll mitigation, and stability control. Advanced safety features like blind-spot monitoring and forward collision warning were standard only on top trims or available as part of an option package. The Wrangler received mixed ratings from the IIHS and a four-star frontal crash test rating from the NHTSA, with a three-star rollover rating.
