2022 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

Since its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only manufacturing facility north of the Mexican border. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that.

Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Updates include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features. (Interestingly, while the BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup in the United States, it continues in 2022 in Canada. This model is not covered in this review.)

2023 Genesis GV80 Reviews Summary

We first got an idea of the GV80 in 2017 at the New York Auto Show when the company debuted a concept. Fast forward to 2021 when we saw the first production model and we knew it would be a hit. Over the past two years, our admiration has only grown. Available in Canada with Advanced or Prestige packages, the GV80 is a midsize luxury SUV with plenty of features, offering stellar value for those who recognize a good deal when they see it.

Verdict: With great styling inside and out, plus a healthy choice of potent powertrains, the Genesis GV80 is an attractive and capable option in the midsize luxury SUV segment. Its technology can require a bit of a learning curve, but there are few true faults with this vehicle.

Look and feel

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 BMW X3 presented a refreshed exterior design that subtly enhanced its aggressive stance. The signature kidney grille was enlarged, yet it avoided the overly bold look seen in other BMW models. The adaptive full LED headlights were slimmer, complemented by new vertical air intakes and a redesigned front bumper. At the rear, the taillights featured a new design with a black surround and pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs. The updated rear also included larger exhaust tips and a new bumper. The X3 offered nine exterior finishes, with new metallic colours like Brooklyn Grey and Tanzanite Blue. The interior was well-appointed, featuring a clean design with options for wood trim, an anthracite headliner, and various seating materials, including SensaTec synthetic leather and premium Vernasca leather. The cabin offered ambient lighting and a panoramic moonroof, enhancing the overall ambiance.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 exuded sophistication with its quad-lamp headlights and bold grille, giving it a stately presence. The exterior was complemented by 22-inch alloy wheels on the Prestige trim, while the rear echoed the quad lamp look with four-part taillamps. The interior continued the dark green theme with quilted leather seats, a split dash with horizontal air vents, and a centre console featuring three large dials for infotainment, transmission, and drive modes. The 14.5-inch infotainment screen, though slightly awkwardly placed, was a focal point of the interior. The spacious and luxurious cabin was a pleasant place to spend time, despite the minor annoyance of the infotainment screen's placement.

Performance

2022 BMW X3

2023 Genesis GV80

8/10

The 2022 BMW X3 featured an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The xDrive30i variant was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The M40i variant boasted a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, delivering 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. The M40i offered a more exhilarating driving experience with its sport brakes, adaptive suspension, and rear-oriented torque split. The mild-hybrid system provided an additional 11 horsepower during acceleration but did not significantly improve fuel efficiency.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 came standard with all-wheel drive and offered a choice between a turbocharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and a twin-turbo 3.5-litre V6. The V6 variant produced 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. While not the quickest in its class, the GV80 excelled in highway driving, offering smooth power delivery and shifts. The electronically controlled suspension, combined with active noise cancellation, provided a comfortable and quiet ride. The GV80's performance was more focused on comfort and luxury rather than athleticism.

Form and function

2023 Genesis GV80

9/10

The 2022 BMW X3 offered a comfortable and practical interior with seating for five and ample storage space. The rear seats featured a 40/20/40-split, providing flexibility for cargo and passengers. The SensaTec faux-leather seats were comfortable, with the option to upgrade to Vernasca leather for added softness. The redesigned centre console and larger infotainment system improved ergonomics and accessibility. The X3's interior was well-suited for both driver and passengers, with thoughtful touches like a power tailgate and optional hands-free opening.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 impressed with its luxurious features and spacious interior. Standard amenities included heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Ergo driver's seat offered a unique fatigue-reducing function. The GV80 provided ample cargo space, with 988 litres behind the second row and 2,378 litres with the seats folded. The proximity key, tri-zone climate control, and available 21-speaker Lexicon sound system added to the vehicle's appeal. The GV80's interior was both functional and opulent, making it a comfortable choice for long journeys.

An optional Live Cockpit Professional upgraded both screens to 12.3 inches, providing a fully digital experience. The X3's technology package included a 12-speaker HiFi sound system, with an optional Harman Kardon surround sound system for the M40i. Additional tech options included comfort access keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, and a head-up display.

The 2023 Genesis GV80 came equipped with a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch 3D digital gauge cluster. The infotainment system offered Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, though not wirelessly. The GV80 featured remote smart parking assist, allowing the vehicle to park itself without the driver inside. The system included wireless charging, multiple USB ports, and a 110-volt outlet. The GV80's technology package was comprehensive, though the infotainment system's menu structure required a learning curve.
