2022 BMW X3 Reviews Summary

Since its inception in 2003, the BMW X3 has grown to become one of the brand’s top sellers. And starting with its second generation (circa 2010), the luxury compact crossover has been built at BMW Spartanburg—the automaker’s only manufacturing facility north of the Mexican border. Incidentally, because Spartanburg is the global producer of every gas-powered BMW crossover besides the X1 and X2, the plant also boasts the highest production numbers of any BMW plant worldwide. One can speculate that the popular X3 has a lot to do with that.

Last redesigned for 2018, the X3 receives a rather hefty mid-cycle refresh for 2022. Updates include design tweaks, new engines, more technology, and an expanded suite of safety features. (Interestingly, while the BMW X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid has been dropped from the lineup in the United States, it continues in 2022 in Canada. This model is not covered in this review.)

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Reviews Summary

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid isn't particularly attractive, sporty, or luxurious. Compared to the performance and refinement of the best three-row SUVs, it's middling at best. The best selling points are its excellent fuel economy and accessible pricing, and in this manner, its nearly unequaled.

Look and feel

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

The 2022 BMW X3 presented a refreshed exterior design that subtly enhanced its aggressive stance. The signature kidney grille was enlarged, yet it avoided the overly bold look seen on other BMW models. The adaptive full LED headlights were slimmer, complemented by new vertical air intakes and a redesigned front bumper. At the rear, the taillights featured a black surround with pincer claw-shaped brake light LEDs, adding a modern touch. The updated rear also included larger exhaust tips and a new bumper. The X3 offered nine exterior finishes, with new metallic colours like Brooklyn Grey and Tanzanite Blue. The interior was well-appointed, featuring a variety of inserts, adjustable seats, and a panoramic moonroof. The cabin's ambient lighting added a customizable atmosphere, enhancing the overall driving experience.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid took styling cues from Toyota's Tacoma pickup, with a trapezoidal grille and upright fascia lending it a rugged appearance. However, the design introduced some softness with a character line swooping over the rear wheel arch, which added unnecessary visual weight. The rear echoed the trapezoidal grille, resulting in a somewhat disjointed design compared to more cohesive competitors. Inside, the asymmetrical dash featured a metallic styling element that broke up monotony and provided storage. The infotainment touchscreen was mounted high for easy visibility. The Bronze Edition introduced 18-inch bronze alloy wheels and unique fabric seat upholstery, though the latter attracted dirt and stains. The Softex synthetic leather substitute was less convincing compared to alternatives. The rear seating area had more hard plastics, typical for family SUVs, but the third row was less comfortable with unyielding armrests.

Performance

2022 BMW X3

7/10

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

5/10

The 2022 BMW X3 featured an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The xDrive30i variant was powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 248 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, achieving 0-100 km/h in 6.3 seconds. The M40i variant boasted a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system, delivering 382 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, with a 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. The M40i's performance was enhanced by a flap-controlled sports exhaust system, sport brakes, adaptive suspension, and a rear-oriented torque split AWD system. The mild-hybrid system, featuring a 48-volt start/generator, offered smoother start/stop operation and an additional 11 horsepower during acceleration, though it didn't improve fuel efficiency.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and hybrid system, producing 243 horsepower. It employed a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and standard AWD, with an electric motor powering the rear axle. Toyota estimated a 0-100 km/h time of just over eight seconds. The hybrid powertrain provided a quick but tepid response from a standstill, with the gasoline engine supplying more power as speed increased. The CVT resulted in an uninspired drone when more power was needed, particularly on hills. Braking was smooth, with regenerative braking seamlessly transitioning to physical brakes. The ride quality was soft, with the suspension effectively smoothing over bumps, and the cabin remained quiet on highways.

Form and function

2022 BMW X3

2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid

6/10

The 2022 BMW X3 offered seating for five, with a roomy interior for a compact crossover. The rear seats featured a 40/20/40-split, providing ample cargo space when folded. The SensaTec faux-leather seats were comfortable, with the upgraded Vernasca leather adding softness. The X3's sport seats were supportive, though the thigh-support cushion's control handle could be intrusive for some drivers. The redesigned centre console improved ergonomics, with a larger standard infotainment system and optional 12.3-inch touchscreen. The layout mimicked newer BMW models, with push-button and rocker-style controls for climate and audio functions.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's front seats were well-cushioned, with plenty of adjustments for drivers. Storage options included a deep tray under the infotainment screen, a small shelf, and a large centre armrest bin. The second-row seats were spacious, with captain’s chairs that slid and reclined for versatility. A second-row bench was available, increasing passenger capacity to eight. The third-row seat was less accommodating, with limited headroom and legroom, suitable for occasional use by children. Cargo space behind the third row was 453 litres, expanding to 1,370 litres with the seatbacks folded, and 2,387 litres with the second row stowed.

The 2022 BMW X3 featured BMW Live Cockpit Plus with iDrive 7 telematics, including a 5.1-inch colour display instrument panel and 10.25-inch infotainment screen. Standard features included navigation, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and connected digital features. An optional Live Cockpit Professional enlarged both screens to 12.3 inches, offering a fully digital experience. The standard sound system was a 12-speaker 205-watt HiFi, with an optional Harman Kardon surround sound system for M40i models. Additional tech options included comfort access keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, and lumbar support.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid's technology features included an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, with a 12.3-inch touchscreen available for the top trim. The infotainment system was responsive, with physical shortcut buttons and separate climate control buttons. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity were standard, with wireless charging available on Limited and Platinum trims. Navigation and an 11-speaker JBL premium audio system were standard on the Highlander Hybrid Limited and Platinum trims.

The 2022 BMW X3 received a five-star crash safety rating from the NHTSA. Standard safety features included adaptive LED headlights, a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, active blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning with pedestrian/cyclist detection. Optional features included parking assistance plus, active park distance control, and a 360-degree surround camera view.

The 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid achieved a five-star overall score from the NHTSA and was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS. Standard safety features included adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert. A surround view camera system and head-up display were available on the top Platinum trim. The adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist systems required some fine-tuning for smoother operation.
