2021 Lexus GX Reviews Summary

ost modern SUVs are really car-based crossovers—lifted station wagons, or minivans without the sliding doors. That’s not the case with the 2021 Lexus GX 460.

Like the mythical Loch Ness Monster, the GX is a creature that time forgot. It’s one of the last SUVs with truck-like body-on-frame construction and true off-road capability. That’s because the GX is actually a rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (a smaller version of the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser not sold in North America), and is related to the Toyota 4Runner. It’s also genuinely old: the current generation dates back to the 2010 model year, and Lexus has kept it in production with some updates of styling and tech over the years.

That makes the GX a fairly odd proposition on the new-car market. It has the off-road capability, not as a lifestyle statement, but because that’s what was still expected of SUVs when it was launched. The GX sits between the RX and LX in the Lexus lineup but has little direct competition. Its only real rival is the much newer Land Rover Discovery.

For the 2021 model year, the GX gets some minor updates. Lexus continues to offer only the GX 460 model, with a single powertrain option, a standard four-wheel drive (4WD) drivetrain, and two pricing levels: base, or the Executive package.

2022 Nissan Pathfinder Reviews Summary

You said it and Nissan listened. The automaker is bringing back much of the heralded capability of the classic Pathfinder, as well as a rugged-ish body style, for the 2022 model year. Thoughtful innovations and features make the Pathfinder more than just a competent family hauler while Nissan’s safety tech puts minds at ease.

Look and feel

2021 Lexus GX

7/10

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

9/10

The 2021 Lexus GX retained its decade-old body shell, with minor updates over the years, including the signature spindle grille and triple-beam LED headlights. Despite its age, the GX's styling was coherent, with a massive grille that contributed to its tough, aggressive look, appealing to SUV enthusiasts. However, the interior did not match the modern luxury SUV standards, with wood trim resembling plastic and an abundance of actual plastic. The semi-aniline leather was a standard feature, but the overall interior felt outdated.

In contrast, the 2022 Nissan Pathfinder embraced a new era of SUV design with a modern take on the V-motion grille, LED headlights, and a robust aesthetic. The Pathfinder offered 11 paint jobs and colour combinations, including a black roof option. The SUV was wider and higher than its predecessor, with a planted look on the road. The design changes aimed to position the Pathfinder as more capable and rugged, with four trim levels offering various features like body-colour door handles, chrome badging, and privacy glass. The interior was upscale, with options for semi-aniline leather-appointed seats and a focus on flexibility and comfort.

Performance

2021 Lexus GX

6/10

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

8/10

The 2021 Lexus GX featured a 4.6-litre V8 engine producing 301 horsepower and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. While the V8 provided ample power for initial acceleration, the GX's weight of 2,349 kilograms made high-speed maneuvers challenging. The SUV's body-on-frame construction resulted in a less refined ride quality, with noticeable body roll and low grip in corners. However, the GX excelled in off-road capability, with a Torsen centre differential, standard 4WD system, and features like Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select. It offered a towing capacity of 2,948 kilograms.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder retained its 3.5-litre V6 engine, delivering 284 horsepower and 259 lb-ft of torque, paired with a new 9-speed automatic transmission. The Pathfinder's AWD system included hill descent control and seven drive modes. The SUV's suspension provided a stable ride, and its tight turning radius made it easy to maneuver. With a towing capacity of 2,720 kilograms, the Pathfinder offered a smooth driving experience, although the transmission occasionally struggled at speed. The Pathfinder's unibody construction contributed to its refined handling and comfort.

Form and function

2021 Lexus GX

5/10

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

9/10

The 2021 Lexus GX's interior ergonomics reflected its age, with limited legroom and an awkward steering wheel position. The dashboard design offered excellent outward visibility, but forward visibility was hindered by the tall hood. Storage options were limited, with small centre-console storage and cupholders. The GX featured three rows of seating for seven, but the third row was cramped and difficult to access. Cargo space was limited, with only 1,833 litres available with the second and third rows folded.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder prioritized interior comfort and flexibility, with improved insulation for a quieter ride. The SUV offered features like wide-opening doors, second-row captain's chairs, and the ability to install up to five car seats. The EZ Flex Latch and Glide system allowed easy third-row access, and the removable second-row centre console added convenience. The Pathfinder provided ample cargo space, with 470 litres behind the third row and up to 2,421 litres with the second and third rows folded. The interior was spacious, with heated front seats and tri-zone climate control.

Technology

2021 Lexus GX

4/10

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

7/10

The 2021 Lexus GX was light on tech features, with standard Bluetooth but no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility. The infotainment system was outdated, with basic graphics and limited functions. However, the GX included analog controls for most functions, offering a straightforward interface.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder was equipped with a wealth of technology, including an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a 7-inch digital driver-information display. Upper trims offered a 9-inch touchscreen, wireless charging, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. The Pathfinder's tech features were user-friendly and accessible across various trim levels.

Safety

2021 Lexus GX

6/10

2022 Nissan Pathfinder

9/10

The 2021 Lexus GX came with the Lexus Safety System+ bundle, including features like a pre-collision system, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. However, it lacked some advanced safety features found in other Lexus models.

The 2022 Nissan Pathfinder featured the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite, with automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. A rearview camera was standard, with a surround-view monitor available on upper trims. The Pathfinder included ten airbags, with an additional airbag on the Platinum trim.
