CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 66 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,877 CAD, 37.9% of 2020 Subaru Outback listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favourably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Subaru Outback 4.95 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Subaru Outback stands out by blending wagon-like character with the practicality of a midsize crossover. Subaru’s sixth-generation update brought a giant new tablet interface, fresh safety tech, and two new engines, while the Outback still kept the utility, performance, and looks that helped make it Subaru’s top-selling model. It also comes standard with all-wheel drive, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want a capable, all-weather family vehicle.
That said, the 2020 Outback is not without compromises. The touchscreen response is sluggish, and the base engine is underwhelming. Even so, it remains an appealing choice for shoppers who value space and overall value, especially since its roomy cabin and broad usefulness are among its strongest traits.

More money yields a better, quieter, smoother ride and features. I think the Suburu Outback has many such benefits without having to spend an extraordinary amount of money for them. It has great safety features, extras such as 3 position headrests, gets good mileage, and is well equipped with convenience items. Its a good value for what it offers and has a particularly good reputation for quality and reliability.

How much does the 2020 Subaru Outback cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,384 CAD |
| Year-Round Low | $23,223 CAD |
| Year-Round High | $28,168 CAD |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,168 CAD |
| Change vs. Last Year | −16.98% |
Prices have softened 16.98% compared to this time last year, making it a favourable time to shop this model year.
There are 224 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Subaru Outback earns a 4.95/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, spacious cabin, and strong safety features, and many also like its smooth ride and impressive power. The Outback’s broad usefulness and all-weather capability fit well if you want a practical family vehicle with plenty of room.
The trade-offs are a sluggish touchscreen response and an underwhelming base engine. Even so, the Outback’s wagon-like practicality and standard all-wheel drive make it a strong fit if you value space and everyday versatility.
There are 37.9% good or great deals in the market, which points to decent shopping opportunities.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.95/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with praise for its long-term appeal, comfort, and confidence-inspiring safety. Subaru’s standard all-wheel drive and the expert review’s emphasis on the model’s everyday usefulness reinforce that sense of durability.
The expert review also notes that the Outback’s all-wheel-drive system is active all the time, which supports consistent power delivery and less disruption when conditions change. That said, used buyers should still watch for technology-related annoyances that could affect day-to-day satisfaction over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Outback?
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Convenience trim is the most stripped-down version, with dual 7-inch screens instead of the larger display found higher up, and it can feel spartan compared with the rest of the lineup. Touring adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, while Limited and Premier bring more comfort and luxury features.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre engine is fine for most driving, but the 2.4-litre turbocharged engine in XT trims is the better choice if you want stronger passing power or plan to tow. Both engines use a CVT, and Subaru’s tuning helps it feel more natural than many CVTs.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure alert with lane-keep assist. Blind-spot monitoring is not standard on Touring, and reverse auto braking appears higher in the range.
- Infotainment: Most trims get the 11.6-inch touchscreen, while the base Convenience trim uses dual 7-inch screens. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth are included, but the system is known for lag.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.5-litre engine is rated at 9.0 L/100 km in the city, 7.1 L/100 km on the highway, and 8.2 L/100 km combined.
Which 2020 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2020 Subaru Outback is offered in 7 trim levels: Convenience, Touring, Limited, Premier, Outdoor XT, Limited XT, and Premier XT.
Here's the short version:
- Convenience: This is the entry point, and it gives you heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, keyless entry, LED headlights, automatic climate control, and the standard safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Outback, but it is the most basic-feeling version.
- Touring: This is the first trim that brings the 11.6-inch touchscreen, plus dual-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, a power liftgate, reverse auto braking, and blind-spot monitoring. It is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds the features most people will notice every day.
- Limited: This trim adds a memory system for the driver, an upgraded Harman Kardon stereo, leather upholstery, navigation, and a heated steering wheel. It is a strong pick if you want a more premium cabin without stepping into the turbo models.
- Premier: This is the comfort-focused choice, with upgraded Nappa leather and ventilated front seats. It suits you best if you want the most upscale non-turbo Outback.
- Outdoor XT: This trim starts with Limited equipment and adds the turbo engine, heated rear seats, a front-view camera, hill-descent control, and a more aggressive version of Subaru’s X-Mode. It is the one to choose if you want the most capability-oriented setup.
- Limited XT: This combines the Limited trim’s luxury features with the turbo engine. It is a good fit if you want stronger performance without giving up the nicer interior upgrades.
- Premier XT: This is the most luxurious version, pairing the Premier trim’s upscale equipment with the turbo engine. Choose it if you want the top-end Outback experience.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but blind-spot monitoring is not standard on Touring.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare options and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 224 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.98% compared with last year.
If you find a listing below $23,223 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $23,384 CAD sits slightly below last year's $28,168 CAD.
That softer pricing can be good news if you are buying now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market. If prices stay near current levels, resale values should remain more accessible for used buyers, though not as strong as they were a year ago.
The Outback’s broad appeal, standard all-wheel drive, and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand over time. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.95/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2020 Subaru Outback earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Its standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure alert, lane-keep assist, and wiper-linked automatic headlights. EyeSight is standard, but it can be sensitive to weather and lighting conditions, which is worth keeping in mind if you drive in challenging climates.
DriverFocus is also standard, but the expert review describes it as frustrating and overly intrusive. If you are shopping used, make sure the driver-assist systems work properly and that you are comfortable with how they behave in real-world driving.
Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.95/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 update adds a larger touchscreen, fresh safety tech, and new engines.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,137 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,384 CAD average.
- It leans harder into practicality, reliability, and low-cost ownership.
The bottom line: Choose the 2020 if you want the better value and are comfortable with its tech quirks. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model-year perspective, the 2021 is the better fit for buyers who prioritise practicality and long-term usefulness over price.
