The expert assessment also supports that impression by describing Mazda’s design, engineering, and quality as a cut above what mainstream competitors offer.

Mazda also positions the CX-5 as a cost-effective choice among compact SUVs, which can help reduce the stress of long-term ownership. For used buyers, the main risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the vehicle’s age and equipment level still match your expectations.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GX, GS, GT, GT Turbo, and Signature trims step up from a more basic cabin to more premium materials and features. Base-trim equipment is lighter, while higher trims add a more luxurious look and feel, with Signature bringing premium Nappa leather upholstery, real wood, and a black headliner.
• Powertrain: The standard 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while GT Turbo and Signature use a turbocharged version with much stronger output. The turbo model comes only with AWD, and the non-turbo engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
• Safety package: The standard suite includes smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. GS adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist.
• Infotainment: GX gets a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. GT adds SiriusXM, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and navigation, while GT Turbo adds an 8-inch touchscreen and Signature adds a surround-view camera system.
• Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated AWD model is rated at 9.3 L/100 km combined, the FWD version at 8.8 L/100 km combined, and the turbocharged version at 9.8 L/100 km combined.

Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: GX, GS, GT, GT Turbo, and Signature.

Here's the short version:

• GX: This is the entry point, but it still gives you the core CX-5 experience with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus the basic Mazda Connect setup. It suits you if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live with fewer comfort and convenience features.
• GS: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds important safety equipment, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. If you want the strongest mix of value and everyday usability, this is the trim to focus on.
• GT: This trim adds a more upscale feel with SiriusXM, a Bose premium sound system, and navigation, while also bringing adaptive headlights. It makes sense if you want a more polished daily driver without jumping to the turbo models.
• GT Turbo: This is the choice if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and the extra performance that comes with it. It also adds the colour 8-inch touchscreen, but the main reason to buy it is the more powerful powertrain.
• Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with premium Nappa leather, real wood trim, a black headliner, and a surround-view camera system. Choose it if you want the most premium CX-5 experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package starts with the standard ADAS suite and expands meaningfully at GS, so that trim is the key one to compare carefully.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 410 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.29% compared with last year.

If you find a listing below $23,057 CAD, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?

The current average of $23,129 CAD sits slightly below last year's $25,783 CAD.

That price decline suggests the CX-5 has become more accessible for used buyers, which can make it easier for future sellers to attract interest if they price competitively. The current market also shows that shoppers are still willing to pay for the model’s premium feel, so well-kept examples should remain appealing.

Because the CX-5 combines strong owner satisfaction with a premium reputation, it should continue to hold buyer interest better than many mainstream SUVs. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?

The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes smart city brake support, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist are added at GS trim, while adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.

Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 28.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.29% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It delivers a premium feel with strong safety and a more upscale cabin than many rivals.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $25,705 CAD, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $23,129 CAD average.
• Mazda enhanced the tech and added a new Kuro Edition for Canadian buyers.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer model with updated technology, the 2021 is the better path for price-insensitive shoppers.
